My cat has been in the first stages of labour since 8AM this morning and it's now 3AM. We've had the yellow cloudy discharge with the little amount of blood but that was almost four hours ago now. She stopped having strong contractions after the cloudy discharge was released, now she has but a few small contractions every here and there. We did believe she had entered the second stage of labour as she was washing her vulva frequently which is apparently a sign of entering the second stage. I'm rather worried as she's got a rather small frame and the cat she mated with is a rather large persian cat, so maybe she simply cannot get them into the birth canal? All contractions thus far appear to have been in-voluntary so she hasn't actually started pushing them out herself yet. I know the first stages of labour can last anywhere up to 36 hours, but our cat book says once the cloudy discharge and blood is released that's the end of the first stage and then the second stage of labour is supposed to start (when she begins voluntary contractions to release the kittens). She could also have delayed labour due to perhaps a disruption, however she still has had a few tiny contractions and continues to breathe rapidly.
Would appreciate any help that can be given. Thanks!

Hi Ayrix, I think you should get your cat to the vet as soon as you can if no kittens have emerged by the time you read this. As you say, the kittens may be too large to move through the birth canal. If left too long she will lose the kittens and be in serious danger of getting an infection that will kill her as she will be too exhausted to fight it off.

Your little one should be receiving veterinary help - you could end up losing her and all the kittens :'(
Why did you breed such a small queen with a large Tom, Im sorry but that is an instant recipe for problems - I hope it all turns out okay.

I hope the poor cat is OK - I also can't believe someone waited so long and then posted on a forum. All it takes is a call to a vet. Please lets hope the cat is OK.

The pregnant kitty gave birth to three lovely little babies about an hour after I posted this thread. All are healthy and doing well, and not at all big, thankfully. She's being a very good mother and perhaps just wasn't ready for them to come out yet. Thanks for the concern from everyone, luckily no vet was needed. The first stage of labour can last up to 36 hours I have heard, which was why a vet wasn't called beforehand. :thanks:

Oh yes they certainly are! One of the little babies is a right guzzler. She managed to give birth to all three within an hour of starting her voluntary contractions, and didn't cry out once. Very proud of my little girl!
Indeed it does. One of them is a right screamer too. :tired:

well I am glad it turned out OK, but please consider having her spayed now that she has her kittens. She could come into a 'silent' heat soon after they are born and have more babies too soon. Keep her indoors until she has her operation.

She is an indoor cat so outside toms won't be a problem and we are getting the male cat castrated in a week or twos time. In the meanwhile he is being kept seperated from the mum and kittens. Kittens are already growing so big! Thank you for the input from everyone. :]

Indoor cat or not she still needs to be neutered after the kittens are weaned, its very dangerous for her not to be and risks getting cancer.

Ayrix, glad it's all going OK. :) Hope Dad is not stressing out too much being kept out of things. ;)

Thank you for linking me to the thread - I will definately ensure she gets spayed ASAP. In December last year we lost our much loved 13 year old colour point persian to Mammary cancer, and it's nice to know the most likely cause of why she had it now, even though she was spayed by the time of her passing. I'd hate to lose another to it because as Tan said, it is a very horrible disease and just aweful seeing your kitty go through it knowing you can't do much to help cure them.

Aah, pictures! Here are a few snaps of the babies that I managed to take over the past two days. Mummy is being suprisingly nice and friendly to us all even though she is often a moody little madam. We're making the most of her maternal streak while it lasts. :)

This is the one we are unsure about the sex. We've temporarily named him/her Goggles (will become apparant why later on!)
He/she appears to be mostly black with a white belly with some black spots along one side as well as a string of white going around his/her neck, He/she has light gray tabby markings along their sides and also has some random white splodges on his/hers tail and legs. White feet with one black little finger on one front paw and one black little toe on one back paw with white on the inside of his/her ear. His nose is brown.

This is the little girl we have temporarily named Lemon. She is mostly tabby and white with some random ginger looking patches on the back of her head. She has white front and back paws and screams a lot!! She has, as you can see, a big white splodge on her back which is in the same place as her daddy's gray splodge.

This is the little boy who appears to be tabby and white who we have temporarily named Simba. He does however have some ginger areas on his head and nose. He has the smallest ears of the three.

They will be going to family/friends, though we may keep little Goggles. We're going to see how it goes, and what their personalities are like. We have a lot of people we are close to that are interested in the babies though, so thankfully we will be comfortable in the knowledge that they are in good homes. :) Not sure how we're going to ever part with them though, they are simply too adorable to part with!
