Title: Cat pees in her litter tray, but poo's in the dining room!
Post by: Feline-Fan on November 24, 2009, 20:58:41 PM
Hope someone can help!

We have 2 cats, both aged 17, yet in tip top condition.  :)  They normally happily go outside to do their business and we have an electronic cat flap, so never have any probs with other cats in the house etc

3 weeks ago however, one of them was attacked by a neighbours cat outside on our back patio. She subsequently developed Cystitis, through the stress of it. We took her to vets, who gave her an injection and some cystese.  Has thankfully done the trick, and the mad spraying / blood she had in her urine has stopped. Although she still seems a little anxious.  :scared:

We also put down a litter tray for her, so she wouldn't have to go outside.  However, she tends to poo outside the litter tray - in our dining room - same area each time. Although we act as soon as we spot the poo, maybe we are not cleaning it thoroughly enough?  Although she did once poo in the litter tray last week! So am confused as to why she will happily pee in the tray, but poo elsewhere?  We work full time, so accompanying her outside is impossible during the day.  We bought a feliway diffuser last week, but that may be too soon to take effect?  Our other cat is fine and happily still goes outside and is fine. We can't shut her out of the dining room, as a) there isn't a door to shut, and b) it's other exit, leads into the kitchen and the back door, where the cat flap is.

Have read the guidance on here, but none of it really seems to fit my scenario! Anyone experienced similar?  How did you get your cat to either poo in the tray or start going outside again? Have attached a pic of the cat in question!

Thanks!

Aww hello lola!

My kitten did this, turned out she wanted one box to pee in and one to poo in. I'd suggest putting another tray in the dining room, where she usually goes.
of course clean the area thoroughly with a 10% biological solution etc

:-: poor baby.....i wonder if you could put the tray where she poos?......just an idea?..failing that ask the vet about feliway spray?..im not sure if it works for poo...but when i had a kitten that continuously peed by the door despite the fact that we had clean litter tray Feliway spray did the trick!

our lloyds pharmacy sells it so you might not have to necisarily have to go to vets to get it?

check out with vet first though  xxxxx

OMG  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:.  No waaaay is she 17!  :)  She is spitting image of our 2 year old Dinah

Would agree with peeing in one tray and pooing in another scenario.  Very common  :)

We are having exactly the same problem with Maisie. We.ve had her since April and up until about 6 weeks ago she used her tray quite happily. It started with just the odd poo on the carpet along side the tray but has progressed to pretty much a daily poo on the floor. As far as we are aware nothing happened 6 weeks ago to spook her. We tried taking the lid off in case she was nervous being "trapped inside to no avail. Tried different litters but nothing is working. Dont really want to shut her out of the room as think she may start elsewhere - at least this way we know where the poo is !!  ;D She was very nervous when we 1st got her but is pretty chilled now so no idea whats going on or why this started

I agree about providing 2 trays and maybe try a different litter in the 2nd tray, just in case its the litter she doesnt like the feel of of underfoot (ok for a quick wee, but maybe not so comfortable for a longer visit!  ;) )

 Gill. that was one of the reasons we tried a different litter ( chunky one ) cos Maisie bless her on the odd occassion that she does potter outside she poos on our gravel drive and scrapes up for ages . we thought perhaps she liked the feel of the gravel though must be hard on her paws  You think we should get a delivery of gravel for her litter tray  ??

First thing to try is two trays but as you have another cat the general rule is one tray each plus one

Oh, If you're thinking of getting Feliway, look on amazpon, it's about £10 cheaper than in shops.

Just so I can be clear.... where is her litter tray currently?  :shify: This is not a case of her 'missing' and the poo-poo ending up on the carpet beside her tray?  :shy: Sometimes as they get older their marksmenship isn't what it used to be. I've known cats so poor at hitting the tray they need a washing up bowl to avoid overspill.

Definitely agree with the suggestion of offering more than one tray. Poor love might be embarassed or feel vulnerable and want to vary the place she uses.

Hi there,

Thank you very much for all your kind thoughts and advise.
We bought another litter tray yesterday - the current one is in the kitchen, which she happily still used for No 1's - and am happy to report that she used it for No 2's and not the carpet!  ;D We'll see what happens later today, tomorrow etc, but if that is all that was needed, then I'll kick myself for not having got one sooner!!  Oh well so far so good

Thanks again,

Tamsin

 :Hello:

Thought I'd give you an update!

We are now down to just 1 litter tray, :yayyy: (in the dining room - so not ideal!), in which she does both No.1's & No. 2's.
She also now ventures outside, voluntarily - just wish she'd do her business out there too!!

So we have progress, ;D it's just a lot slower than we'd hoped! *sigh*

 :thankyou:

I bought an outdoor litter tray from Zooplus, and it really does stay dry

might be worth a try on the patio
