The cat is out of the bag now so to speak, so here comes the barrage of questions!
I will be proud Mum to two babies Kali and Riley at the end of April. They will be almost 9 weeks when they come home and will be getting their first set of vaccinations at 9 weeks (I think, correct me if I'm wrong), Are kittens normally chipped when they are vaccinated or when they get spayed/neutered?

when they get spayed /neutered is best i think as they dont feel anything
but with 4 of mine i had it done with there first lot of jabs :Luv:

You can have it done at any time but neutering is good as they can do it when they are under anaesthetic. Not sure if there are any implications of doing it on them when they're very small (eg when they have vaccinations) but neutering is a good time. Jaffa had it done at a routine vet appt and didn't flinch when it went in.

depends on how sure you are about them escaping, doing them in the consult room is ok but since its you and the chances of escapees before neutering etc is so remote i'd say do them at neutering.

Yeap me agree best when being neutered/spayed. all done in one job and they dont notice. :shoosh: they might here they have a bug implanted :rofl:!!!!!

We chip all our cats/kittens when homed. However for kittens that come unchipped I personally would have them chipped on first vet visit.

My girls that I got from CP weren't chipped when I got them - they got done when I had them spayed (well should have been but the vets forgot :( ) So they finally got done when they had their stiches removed - they were both due to be sedated for the stiches removal asthey were a bit fiesty with the vets.........so they didn't really feel anything

How long ago was that? As CP HQ have for a time now encouraged all branches to chip the cats they home. They also arranged training for as many people as possible from each branch. They provided a chip reader to Branches many years ago, since then we have purchased one for each person who chips.

In these cases our vets use soluble stitches.

Last June........could it be because they only wanted a minimum of £20 per kitten..........I also had to pay for all jabs and spay etc, didn't make any difference to us as we knew the costs involved as we'd had a cat previously, but could be different for others

Cats Protection branches are not allowed to ask for a donation, they can however suggest a donation. We suggest £30, although it is not written in stone as good home is more important. Cats of 6 months above come neutered/spayed. MOT, dentals done if necessary. flead, wormed, chipped and vaccinated. Kittens have an MOT and are flead, wormed, chipped and an authority to go to our vets for vaccinating.

hmmmm strange, was the Kent branch (Higham) - think its under NW Kent or something. Anyway doesn't matter, 2 little bundles have a loving home :Luv: Given none of the others, just had to sign a piece of paper promising to get them spayed, which the vet had to sign and we sent back after the event

personally i think when rehoming charities are involved it is probably the most sensible decision to chip prior to the puss being rehomed but on an individual basis as in helens case doing it when they are asleep would be fine as she's got a pretty good "credit history" LOL for being very responsible but when the likes of ela etc is rehoming you cannot gaurantee the type of owner they are going to.
It is bound to hurt more in a 12 wk kitten with no fat under the skin than it would in a 6 mnth old almost fully grown puss altho its not the most horrendous thing that could be done to a little one, they do it in birds and fish with the exact same needle.

Mine always have them done with first set of vaccinations. Tigger sat quietly whilst she had it done at 9 weeks old and didn't even make a squeak whereas I fainted on the floor. Hurt me more than Tigglet lol.

Believe me Lynn a lot of work goes into the homing of cat/kittens and not much gets past me, home checkers & fosterers, I think we can almost gurantree 100% that if we home a cat/kitten it is a good home. If any of us have a gut feeling that all is not well then a cat/kitten is not homed. We have a responsibility to the little one to get it right.

i know but not all will be as good as you and others i can think of on here.
so how does it work with you / cpl ? do you home then have them take the cat to the vet for chipping at your expense ?
which reminds me , remember the lady that got the kitten and they chipped it in the tail base and it had a lump on its neck ? I wander how she got on in the end, im sure she was going to lodge a complaint with the rescue centre. Possible it was rspca if i recall correctly.

All cats are chipped before homing, My husband chips and I have 4 fosters who chip also.

Ela, I think anyone respectable enough looking for a kitten/cat goes down the rescue route, surely this is the only way of knowing that the cat is going to be in good health. And with the cats already neutered, this is an added bonus. I think it also shows they are not wanting a cat for breeding purposes.

Some of the rescues I know home cats in a terrible condition.

When I took 1 of my cats to be chipped the vet scanned him to see if he was already chipped and it said he was as a number came up on the scanner, this left me looking like this :-: as Id had him from a kitten, but the vet had forgot to reset the scanner, :rofl:

Over they years anything a cat can have they have been homed with it.

So the new owner knows what they are taking on if the cat needs life long meds or something? Or ill health of the cat?

What I am saying is that some rescues home sick cats just to re-home them and the people who adopt them have no idea until perhaps a couple of day later.
