Was at the vets with Ollie yesterday to get his usual meds, check him over ect Had him weighed and he weighs.....4.6kg, the most he has ever weighed in his whole life ;D
His steriod jab is starting to last longer and see him through, it was going from 2 weeks, then to 3, then to 4. Untill yesterday he hadn't been to the vets in 5 weeks ;D He also wasn't ill till the Sunday gone- by ill I mean having the green drool, usually he gets this at 3-4 weeks from having his shot but nothing this time ;D
So Im pleased to report my little black boy is doing well, really well :yayyy:
On another note, about his booster...I asked the vet how thats going to work, as he cant have it when he's had his steriod jab, and the vet said leave it for a couple of weeks after then get him done.....
Then I said he's in a catproofed garden, so doesn't go out really so the vet said he doubts if Ollie would need his booster at all  but once I told him about Harry getting out, he said it was upto me if I wanted to get his booster done as he said there is no way of telling how much imunity Ollie has.
Just shocked me as I thought vets were about making money also, obviously not ;D I love Ollie's vet, hes a great man lol
So what do you think about what he said, any suggestions?
-
You should listen to your vet and do what he says ;D
-
Thats the point, he was kind of saying Ollie doesn't need his booster :-:
-
my Oscar doesn't have any boosters because he gets sick every time, because we are cat proofed the vet is quite happy with that although they are on the look out for single does enteritis vaccine for him but can't seem to find one at the moment
-
CC - I think the vet is being honest and not worrying about where his next merc will come from.... ;) The jabs only safe guard against certain strains anyway. Great news about Ollie. :)
-
Ollie's been having his jabs since being 6 months old, so I would think he has built up some immunity by now. Its just the fact of if I dont bother to get him done, and I want to start again for some reason- will he have to have the first initial course :-:
And what would this mean for my others, should I not bother to get them done either as they have the same outside acsess as Ollie :-:
There is one problem tho, and I fear it will always be, Harry still manages to get out, even tho the catproofing is at least 8ft from the floor
I think Harry is a fighter too, and they can catch feline aids by that, do the vacs cover feline aids?
-
The vet asked me do they ever go into a cattery, to which I said no, then he said he didn't see the point in them having them.
The only reason they do get their jabs is because of my paranoia when I got Ollie, 2 of my cats got mysteriously ill and resulted in loosing Renie. The vet couldn't tell what she had died from without doing a post mortem but from reading I think it was an upper-respority disease that rhino one.
So my lot have been getting their jabs since that :shy:
-
If you are worried then get him Titre tested which will tell you if he's immune or not. You can always get him tested every year.
-
How much do these tests cost?

How much do these tests cost?
That I can't answer I'm afraid. You need to ask your vet. I've seen prices anywhere from £30 - £100+
-
Their boosters only cost £25 :shy:

Their boosters only cost £25 :shy:
It is going to be more expensive as they have to take blood and get it tested for whatever you ask. Some vets do it in-house. Others get it sent away, if they do that you have to pay for whatever those lab fees are. If you don't want him boostered/he can't have them then Titre testing is a way of knowing if he has enough immunity instead of assuming.
-
Sounds like he's leaving it up to you to decide. Maybe a lot of cats don't NEED them BUT I would get mine done and I DO.
My cat is an indoor cat and I get her done every year. However my 1st cat, Tibby lived to be 26 years old and never had one. That was 1960 -1986 and I think there might be more germs etc. around now. You never know what you're bringing into the house on your clothes, skin etc.

Thanks Mary :)

Glad Ollie is doing so well ;D Regarding boosters, I would go with what your vet says  we've always had our cats done but Byron's was due and we took her on Monday but decided to not bother this time, we've been undecided the past few times really, she's 25 and hardly goes out anyway we decided to just take her for a health check.
-
Thats the point, I dont exactly understand what he was trying to say
I know he couldn't advise me against having them as if anything did happen regarding lack of boosters, it could be their fault :shy:
Its not the option of saving money (although that is a bonus) I just dont like giving my cats anything they dont actually have to have :shy:
-
the way mine explained it to me cc was that in reality vets think that boosters actually last for three years - as I said before the only thing my vet wants oscar to have (every three years not every year) is enteritis if they can find a single jab
-
Humm so why do they suggest they be done every year :shify:
Maybe I will phone and tell them Ive been reading up and suggest if we can keep their boosters to every 3 years, would any vet do this?
-
Nobivac has licensed and recommends a 3 year protocol for the dhppi but vets do it every year regardless. My vet doesn't agree with every year so Molly is going to be titre tested next year and possibly vaccinated then which will be 3 years with no vaccination. It will just be a booster and not starting from the beginning. She didn't have Lepto last year but will be this year. Memphis will be having a booster this year and then he's going on the 3 year booster if needed. My bun gets vacc for Myxi as we live near to fields and I walk Molly there, don't want to be bringing that home with us.
I love my vet :Luv2:

I guess it depends on the vet, mine is the actual owner of the practice and is very good with not charging for things, I suppose he thinks it makes me trust him knowing that he'll tell me stuff like that - last time he even told me that the practice gives discounts if you have more than 3 cats boostered at the same time - none of his employees have ever told me that
-
would any vet do this?
Totally depends on the vet. In my practice there are 5 vets. Only 1 of them will do the vaccinating every 3 years. He just happens to be the owner of the practice.
-
The boosters and their need also depend on the health of the cat and Ollie although doing so well at present is not fully healthy and there comes a point when its better not to do boosters.
Franta is in that category and has had none this year and will not again and Kocka also went into that category when her health deterioated and even a killed vaccine made her ill.
All vets disagree on how often they should be done and mine said he spoke to the company and I had 6 weeks to catch Sasa 3yrs ago. And that was novicat!
Personally I think cats get injected with too much , together with worming and flea stuff if done regualarily and mine only get flea treatment if needed except for Sasa who was givem some by the vet and they all get wormed once a year at their health check, except Franta who hasnt had a check this year as he has been at the vets so often.
You have to take what the vet told you and make your own decision and if you have questions direct them to the vet, thats what he is there for.
-
My vet dosent push annual boosters on people either, he will happily do alternative plans.
Although olly has restricted access he has reduced immunity from heavy steroid usage so if i were you i would rediscuss with your vet so you understand what he was meaning and go from there.
Good news that he is doing well ;D
-
I think you need to ask your vet to give you a straight answer and ask any questions you can think of at the same time - write a list if need be.
If you don't get the jabs and anything happens you will be saying 'what if', 'if only' but that could also work the other way if you don't have the jab, you will be worrying thinking you should have had it.
Sorry but this really is a question only you can answer and maybe with the help of your vet you will make the right decision.
Good luck.

I suspect but dont know, that because of the steroids Ollies immune system is weakened and by jabbing him it could give him flu but again a question for the vet and Marys right you need to make a list of questions for the vet.
