Title: Should I adopt this lovely boy (with pic) - is six cats too many ?
Post by: ChrisB on October 04, 2009, 23:28:59 PM
This lovely boy, Buddy, is looking for a home through our local CP branch and I am very tempted.   I am just so worried about upsetting our five girls who get on so well together (which took a while to happen).   Obviously I would take the introduction process slowly but he might find five others too many.   Apparently he is very affectionate and gentle personality, around one year old and came to them as an unneutered stray.   The homing officer suggested we could have him on a trial basis to see how things went so perhaps I should give that a try ?    If he doesn't fit in would everything return to normal for the others if he went back or do you think they would remain upset by it ?     Appreciate any thoughts.

What a hunk :drool;

I think the step from five to six would be hardly noticeable  :naughty:  He looks adorable and if the rescue centre would be willing to take him back if things really didn't work out then you really have nothing to lose - I say go for it!

I think that the ladies need a handsome chap like him to come and brighten their lives would also give you an ally for the football!

Five to six is not a big leap but I'm sure that introductions done carefully would have this boy settled in in no time

he is rather :Luv2:

I suppose the risk is that he is really happy with you, and the others - or some of them - are not happy with him

you would feel very mean handing him back to the rescue then :'(

if he was the unhappy one, it would be much easier to hand him back

but I say you'll never know if you dont put it to the test - so go for it - he looks lovely :Luv:

He is my dream cat  ;D

I was only having 2 and now have 4 which is all I can afford and cope with.

If the cost of another is no problem and you have the space, as the centre are willing to take him back I would go for it  ;D

What a gorgeous puddytat  :Luv2:

As slave to 4 girls and 2 boys, I imagine you know where I stand.  Would you like a few more?  :evillaugh:  I jest, I jest!

When was he neutered btw?  It takes a few weeks for hormones to settle down and unneutered Tom's pee smells a wee bit potent meanwhile.  We collected Freddie (a 5 yr old recently neutered stunner) and had smelly spraying probs for a couple of weeks.  Having said that, your lad is such a beautiful boy I can't see him being available very long so you may not want to wait  :innocent:

He's lovely. Personally, there can never be too many cats :) providing, of course, that you have the room and resources to give them all the care they need. I have a multiple cat household (10 at the monent - thats mine plus fosters) and all have been introduced at different times with (thankfully) minimal dissention from the resident cats. After about the 4th they seem to have taken the attitude 'oh well, just another one to get used to'. Seriously, I think you can never tell how the dynamics will change on introducing a new cat as they are all different but I would say give it a go.

he is lovely - I know with my lot I have a delicate balance because Star is not very laid back - I'd give it a go if you are comfortable with him going back if it all doesn't work out

What have you got in your other 5 age and temprement wise? Iv always said id have to pick carefully to add to my lot who are very closely bonded but with some hard work i have managed to integrate one of the grumpiest/anti cat/old sod iv met and all is going ok!
If CP thinks he is multi cat friendly and your willing to do things slowly then you stand a good chance  ;D Its a fine balance between adding one more and it being enough to tip things over, so aslong as you keep in mind the existing 5 come first and no matter how hard it would be to send him back you would then id say go for it.
You have btw already done a great thing getting 5 girls happy together!  :pat: :pat:

When I had 6 it was never a problem, they all sorted themselves out.

When a friend had to stay and she brought her cat for 3 months it became 7 and even that didn't change things, when she left the clan continued as normal.

Thanks everyone - I just knew I could trust you all to give me that final bit of encouragement I needed !   ;D
We are going to home Buddy on a trial basis and just waiting for a call back from the fosterers.   The existing five come first though and I am prepared to give him back if any of them are unhappy once we have given things a fair chance.
MM, the girls are all CP rescues, Gizmo, 9, very laid back persian but definitely the boss, her daughter half-persian Bubbles, 7, sensitive little girl, and three short haired tortie sisters, Daisy, Ellie and Cleo, aged 3.5, quite shy but all five extremely loving and gentle.   Will keep you posted.

We went to meet Buddy today at the cattery where he is being fostered but, sadly for us all, he won't now be joining our little family for reasons I won't post.   He is a gorgeous, very friendly, little boy who I am sure will soon find his forever home - there is a homing show coming up soon and he will certainly be snapped up.  I am really upset but I must put the welfare of our current five girls first.   Thanks to everyone for their advice.
