Title: Leather Lounge Suite and a mad cat
Post by: nutzy on August 30, 2009, 20:14:06 PM
We want to buy a beautiful brushed leather lounge suite to replace our current material covered suite.  Hubby is worried that Rajah will try and "kill" it.  He is 4 months old and has moments of sheer madness where he careens around the flat climbing the curtains and tearing along the side of the bed and the back of the sofa with all claws out.  Do kittens grow out of this behaviour?  We should hate our prospective new leather lounge suite to get torn!

The suite is sort of a tan colour and looks worn already - kind of scuffed so I don't think a couple of scratches will make much difference, however, a tear would be devastating!  I have read your replies to hubby who says to put it on hold until Rajah's older, but the suite is on special and a really good price so its quite disappointing :(.

Leather will get scratched, no two ways about it. I have a leather settee and leather recliner chair, both are scratched, as Horza says,  when they jump up on it/slip off it  :evillaugh: , unavoidable  I'm afraid - but I actually got leather in preference to material because so many material sofas got totally ruined and ended up looking rubbish with threads hanging/stuffing out, etc. Leather, although scratched, still looks good.

Mine is scratched but noticeably so and it still looks good, the bonus for me is the fact that cat hairs don't cling to leather like they would to a fabric sofa.  There's nothing worse than sitting down and getting covered in cat hair!

I Have just got a leather recliner sofa ( a really good deal - buy a large and a regular one together -my brother did and i bought the 2 seater from him ) .
It  is now covered with a king size throw and a fleecy blanket on the top ( Bungly likes to sit up there !) .
You wouldn''t know its leather -or new

Ours is leather too and has some scratches but there's not alot you can do.  I have throws/fleeces on mine which does help though.

My Mum has leather furniture and although Saffy doesn't deliberately attack or scratch the chairs the arms do have marks on them from where she jumps down and pushes against it.  Not very noticable unless you're looking intently however if it was my sofa, I know I would notice!

Hubby's gone to bed so I'll pass all of this on to him tomorrow.  The suite is soooo gorgeous and comfortable with recliner chairs and all - a 3 and 2 seater for £749 approximately.  Maybe he'll reconsider.  I think the special finishes tomorrow so I'll have to be persuasive   :sneaky:

my black leather sofa only really shows the scratches where the leather is pulled taut over the arms - the more squishy cushions don't show them so much

next time I shall get one with the softer rectangular flat cushions for arms

Good luck!

:scared:  I have four cats, and a leather suite. They don't deliberately harm it, but scratches do show a bit - I'm sure people pay loads for the 'distressed leather' look.  Just one word of caution though, when you relax in your recliner there is a big gap underneath which is very inviting to a curious kitten.  Advise you to always check underneath before slamming the footrest down!!

it's a very good point, we had recliners on our last one and even our oldies were curious so I would imagine at 4 months ever more so

Ours has been scratched really badly by Jess, they aren't accidental scratches either >:(

Jess seems to do it when he wants attention, the scratched sofa is something Hubby and I argue about the most. They are covered in throws but its not stopped them, we also spray no scratch but I'm not sure it works.

Yes, I am very aware of the under the recliner temptation for our boy.  I told hubby everything you said about the scratches not really showing, etc, and he just grunted!  :-:  Men!!! I don't think there will be much progress today, and so the special may very well be over at midnight tonight.  Oh well, something else will come up sometime I'm sure.  Thanks for all your answers! :Luv2:
