Title: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....now with a pic....
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on August 28, 2009, 12:18:00 PM
Had Tia to the vets yesterday and turns out........................she's pregnant  :shy: I dont know wether to be happy about that or not, I have never experienced cat birth and after last time it left me feeling like I never wanted too  :(

But hopefull she and all the babies will be fine  :) She is a lot less stressed with my cats than Saffie was, she even comes and sits in the room of a night  :)

I had decided that Tia is getting on well enough with my others so I was going to keep her, not fair to get her used to here then move her on if she's doing ok  :) that was before I knew she was actually pregnant (I suspected she was but didnt know untill yesterday for sure) so now looks like her and her little ones will be making themselves at home here  :)

I know I will have to part with some of the kittens if she has more than 3, but I dont know if I could do that  :scared:

There is a thread somewhere Michelle, I just cant find it lol

She's a tabby puss that was thrown out by her owners, they couldnt afford to feed her apparently as they need to feed their dog  >:( So she has been straying around my aunts for around 2 weeks, morning noon and night for food. So I decided to bring her here at least untill they had noticed her missing, then I would of given her back  :shy:

And you know what.....they haven't even asked around about their missing cat!!!!!  >:(

So I guess she's better off here  :) She's about 2 I think and my first propper brown tabby.....with many more to come  :evillaugh:

She has been here for 5 weeks now  :)

 :thanks: gals  :)

Jack I dont know, about 3 weeks I think  :scared: vet said there was some milk production in her nipples and that was last Thursday.

She has been layed down a lot on her blanket today, taking some of the pressure off I would think, its not nice being pregnant  :tired:

I was getting worried as I though I was seeing ripples in her stomach area  :scared: When I put my hand on her I felt a little kick  :Luv2:

I love them already and they arnt even here yet, oh my.....................  :innocent:

Tia wont eat the kitten food  :-:

I can also feel her nipples swelling and she is resting more  :scared:

Hopefully this isnt her first litter so she will have some experiance (cos I have none  :scared: ) but this will be her last  :)

So which food if she wont eat the kitten food? She is eating gormet and purina one biscuits but has slowed down on the biscuits now, she was eating them more than the wet to start with.

I was also thinking of getting a small dog cage, where could I get one thats cheep enough or something similar?

I guess you just have to let her eat what she wants - will she eat kitten biscuits?
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 04, 2009, 11:45:47 AM
I dont know Dawn, I only buy purina one for my lot and I dont think they do kitten biscuits, do they? Which brand would be ok for her?

well my Star had kittens with the rspca and when she came to me was addicted to hills kitten biscuits (she was seriously underweight so it didn't matter at the time) which she'd been nicking off her four babies!  I know wellbeloved do kitten biscuits (shame you're not nearer, I got a bag the other day by mistake!) and pets at home do as well, just an idea, she might hate them too!

Yeah she is being very fussy, she will lick the gravy off the meat then eat the meat later  :shy:

try freecycle for a crate, be carefull though you might find too big a cage has bigger gaps

If she doesnt like kitten food its not the end of the world, i normally feed as much adult as they want as iv found kitten food is often too rich for one off the street whos tummy is used to minimal offerings.
Purina do a kitten variety in both one and proplan ranges.
Do you mash her pouches, cant lick the jelly or gravy off then  :evillaugh:

Crates are much cheaper now than they used to be but some of them are really poor quality and as torti points out the gaps can be quite large which you must avoid as if a kit rolls out and mum cant retrieve they very quickly get cold  :(

Suppose she will be having her kits in a cardboard box then  :shy:

nothing wrong with that, snug warm cardboard was around long before cold metal crates, and i'm sure tia wont mind, most of the ferals i've dealt with were born in horrendous weather under a shed on dirty concrete driveways, so i'm sure what ever you give her will be fine

Hum how long should she have left? Its been 2 weeks since I posted this thread, and then the vet said she could feel some milk production. I dont want to be taken by surprise  :shify: I feel her nipples are getting more filled with milk so anybody have a rough guess of how long?  :)

She is settling in well here, loves the "nip" she goes crazy for it  :scared: also she prefers her chicken to be freshly cooked, none of this packet stuff  :snooty:  :evillaugh:

When I saw her on Wednesday I did'nt think she looked that big, mind you I was comparing her in size to Saffie so that could of been the reason....

Last night I put her food where the other cats eat, and she went and ate it  ;D although she will only eat when no others are there, Ollie was lurking about this morning so she demanded breakfast in bed again  :evillaugh:

I find she is resting on her bed a lot more, Im getting worried of just finding kittens one day  :scared:

You can ultrasound but even that isnt definative, chances are you will get up one day and she will have sorted everything out herself

Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 18, 2009, 12:28:27 PM
Ok Im getting anxious and the anticipation is killing me.....................

I have boxes set up, one on the top bunk (where she usually sleeps) and one under the bed as she sometimes sleeps under there. If she has the kittens in the box on the top I will move this down when she is ok with that.

But...... how much longer should she have left? She is starting to slow down growing and still noting although I estimate there should be about a week left?

She is eating ok and not being overly fussy and she is actually getting on really well with my others  ;D

 :Dont know:

Well you've had her about 8 weeks and she's not produced? The normal pregnancy is 9 weeks for a cat - has she been out since being with you?
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 18, 2009, 13:38:29 PM
No Angie my garden is cat proffed so she cant get out, she's only been in the back garden.

Her stomach was getting big, then her body seemed to grow into it, then her stomach started to grow and now her body has grown into it again

When I took her to the vets for the second time, she would of been about 5 weeks then I think, the vets said she could feel some milk production.

I really dont know whats going on here  :-:
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 18, 2009, 13:41:40 PM
Before coming here I had already seen this cat a couple of times and she was not the size she is now, so she must have something in there?  :-:

I have also felt movement from her stomach and seen it, maybe there are only a couple in there, thats why she isnt getting so big, Im confused!

How do I check her nipples and what do I check for etc?
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: Bazsmum on September 18, 2009, 14:30:52 PM
Could the vet feel any kittens?

Just I remember my dog Suki (RIP) she had a phantom pregnancy....milk production, swelling of abdomen etc....until I got her spayed of course!
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 18, 2009, 14:34:14 PM
Well the vet said its kittens or either lots of poo, which I dont think its the latter as she poops every day, and very smelly too

Why would she be growing if it was poop  :-:

Vets tomorrow I think  :shify:

When we first found Gracie Dirty Face we took her to the vets and they felt her stomach and said she was probably about 3-4 weeks pregnant so they must be able to tell quite early.  What made us think she was was that she was mad for food,  eating all the time but the day before she went into labour she hardly ate at all,  I was terrified when she was having the kittens but all was OK,  she done it all on her own and totally ignored any of the birthing boxes we have provided and had the kittens in Teabags Car basket which then had to be thrown away much to his disgust !.    We had a dog crate from some time back when Lou Lou Flump had an operation and we needed to keep her realtively stilll (no jumping etc) so I did move Gracie Dirty Face and the kittens into that within about an hour of them being born,   we had all the heat pads etc,  I was a real nervous first time Mum   but it was all OK in the end,  she had 5 kittens,  all of which were lovely and such good natured,  as you prob know we kept Picalli Polka Pants and Ruby Red Drawers  :Luv2:  The others, Lord Barnaby of Barnwood who went to people who live in the Manor house and Stripes and Buzz Lightyear (I didnt name those two) went to a lovely family who I know so I still get updates.  Hope all goes well CC,  I am sure it will all be brilliant

Thanks Daisy and Dawn, Im really worried  :shify:

She is much more settled than last time, a lot more than Saffie was. She is currently in her box with her blanket, the one she lays on- so it has her smell on it.

I keep checking on her to see if anything has arrived lol

Surely it must be sometime soon?  :-:

Im going to check her nipples, I think Lottie said if the hair has started to bald around them then it will be soon  :scared:

When Gracie got to about 8 weeks we could actually see the kittens moving about in her tummy,  it was really quite amazing.  As I said Gracie had five kittens so her bump was really un-even,  she was certainly more rounder than she was on the other  :Luv2:
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 18, 2009, 14:59:43 PM
Well Tia is "rounder" than when she came here- thats for sure.

I have just felt and can feel a lump but nothing else, but then again I dont know what Im feeling for

Looked at her nipples (I could only find one) and its no hair around and white, although I dont know if I can feel any milk production as Im not a vet.

Her nipples look a normal size, not the size that I have seen on a cat that has recently had kittens  :shify:
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 18, 2009, 15:19:13 PM
Just found this.....

Your cat's nipples will swell a little and change in color to a deep coral pink. This symptom is known as pinking and will be more noticeable if this is the first time your cat has become pregnant. Sometimes not all the nipples turn pink.

With her age I doubt this is her first preganacy, so with her body already knowing whats going on, maybe this is the reason her nipples are not like that? As I said I only found one...

Off to look for more nipples....  :shify:

Ummm I dont know CC,  I am certainly no expert and by 8 weeks you really couldn't miss that Gracie was pregnant,  I didnt even have to look at her nipples  :-[

I think you are right,  the vets is prob the best course of action to be safe and at least then you will be prepared

Couldn't find any more nipples, she is rather furry on her tum, but could feel the milk production around the area.

There is deff something in there, I have felt movement and she looks like she has a balloon in her tum!

She will be going to the vets in the morning  :)

Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 21, 2009, 14:02:05 PM
Well............I am now more confused than before I went to the vets

Apparently she is not pregnant, the vet couldn't feel anything and said she is just a fat cat!

He asked has she come into season, to which I said no, he said she may be spayed, which I dont know and have no way of finding out!

She has a large stomach, which is solid no hanging fat like Macey's (she is a fat cat  :evillaugh: ) and Im sure I felt something move inside of her  :shify:

So I dont know what to think now  :-:

Vet didn't say anything about worms but I said I didn't want to worm her as I thought she has kittens.

I dont know how she has had this rapid weight gain in only about 8 weeks (I think she's been here for about 8 weeks)

So Im really confused and now dont know what to do- worm her or not just incase? Although she isnt eating as though she has worms  :shify:

I have a pic here of her but cant post it for some reason.

So I do wonder what the other vet was talking about when she said she could feel some milk production  :-:

Oh and just to make my uncertainties more uncertain- the vet said if she does have a kitten let us know

ARGH!!!!!!!
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: Den on September 21, 2009, 15:23:36 PM
Well cats are pregnant for about 9 weeks. So if she is, you will know for sure within 2 weeks I would have thought. If she was really full of worms like roundworm you'd find some as they become present in stools and vomit  :scared:

Maybe you need a second opinion.
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 21, 2009, 15:31:42 PM
That was a second opinion Den  :shify: she was last at the vets on 27th Aug.

She is not being sick and she dont have any worms in her no. 2's

Just felt her stomach and she is really hard round the sides, I still think she is

Anyone had this before, rescues?
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: Liz on September 21, 2009, 15:44:01 PM
It may be worth getting an ultra sound just to verify one way or the other - our vet did the last ultrasound on her feralness Miss Indie for free at that point she was pleasant as she was on Zylkene!
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: Den on September 21, 2009, 15:45:50 PM
Maybe a third opinion and an ultrasound. I always thought they can miss them if there is only 1 or 2 kittens and they are being carried up high. But if she's that large and getting bigger surely with palpitating they could feel something  :scared:

Doesn't milk production begin closer to when delivery will occur  :scared:
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: Lottie (Team Svartalfheim's) on September 21, 2009, 16:08:37 PM
My vets are useless with telling if a cat is pregnant and just send you to another vet surgery for an £65 ultrasound if you want to know for certain :tired:

Milbemax is safe to give if she is pregnant so that would solve a worm problem if there is one without causing any harm if she is pregnant.

By 8 weeks Boopy's nipples were much bigger than usual and rather pert (as well as being very pink) and she looked like she was about to explode :evillaugh: Boopy also had no milk production at all until she actually gave birth so that is not always an indication. From about week 7 you could see her tummy moving away when she was lying down and if you laid a hand on her you could feel definate kicks although she did have 6 in there.

I thought my Molly was pregnant - she was one of our first cats, before we knew about the cat over-population problem.  I took her to the Vets and they said she was pregnant and would give birth within the next two weeks.

Three weeks later took her back and they then decided she was not pregnant!!  I do believe though that she had a phantom pregnancy as she did balloon and produce milk.  But I also think she was sterile as I saw the poor girl being mounted by one of the big neighbourhood males several time and heard her screams!!!!

As soon as I knew she was not pregnant she was booked in for spaying and she was the only one who ever reached the age of 18 months without being spayed.  Since that time all mine have been spayed at six months.

They can clip and look for a scar, its not 100% but if there was one you would know, id also go for an ultrasound.
Since Lolas weight has gone up she has a round firm belly, but i know theres no kittens in there, thank god
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 21, 2009, 20:06:32 PM
Thats the thing- I think I have felt something inside  :shify:

Tried to have a look at Macey's nipples to see if they were the same but she wouldn't let me

Im just really confused now, how can one vet say she is and another say she's not  :-: Even the VN looked amazed
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on September 22, 2009, 08:16:16 AM
The weight gain could simply be due to regular meals - didn't you put her on kitten food as well cos you thought she was? I would either get her shaved to see if there is a scar, or have an ultrasound done - although my local RSPCA puts all female cats under and opens them up to see if they are spayed.
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: Dawn F on September 22, 2009, 08:40:22 AM
the rspca shave to  see if there is a spay scar   (just in case the person handing has claimed they spayed and they aren't)
Title: Re: Im hoping it will be better this time around.....
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on September 22, 2009, 09:24:54 AM
Well if she is or isnt, Im sure I will know in a couple of weeks time anyway.

Des she wouldn't eat the kitten food- so now Im stuck with 3 boxes of that  But I have been giving her extra food- obviously as I thought she was pregnant

I just dont understand (if it is just weight) how she has put so much on in her mid-region, and nowhere else really  :shify: You can tell Macey is fat, but Tia does look pregnant

And she only weighs 4.6kg, she wasn't overly skinny when she came here but with the rate of her stomach growth, what else was I to think  :-:

Have also has a "squeeze" of her tum and its hard, not like any of my others  :-:

Daisy that pic was taken a while ago, will check to see if I can find out the date.

That pic was taken on the 23rd of July, she certainly didn't look like that when she came here.

By my calculations 23rd July was 9 weekls ago tomorrow so unless she mated the day the photo was taken or indeed after that , she only has today to produce; other than that she cant be.

I would give her Milbemax; I would also book her in for spay regardless, there are reasons for a cat not to call.

Which are?  :scared:

When I told the vet that she hadn't been in season, and from the fact that he didn't think she was pregnant, he said she could already be spayed  :shify:

Thats the point even if she did come into season, she wouldn't be able to get out anyway with the cat proofing, the back garden is as far as she goes. My lot have also been neutered  :)

What would happen if they do a spay but she is already done?  :-:

As far as I know, they'd see as soon as they looked "in that area" and finish up the op. At least you'd know one way or another if she was spayed, I suppose.

CC I am not going to freak you out by telling you of experiences I have had for a cat not calling, she may be spay or she may not be, as for cat proof fencing she shouldnt be able to escape but a Tom could get in do the deed and be stuck in the garden unable to get out.

Oh dear I have 2 ladies who look like that and both are speyed they just have a saggy bit.

We also had a cat who reabsorded her pregnancy and when we wormed her she lost all that excess weight - she has now eaten and is a fuller figured girl again - Our Miss Diva

We also had Peanut who always has a sag - never came in to eason and was speyed at 11 months - she was full of cysts and goes in every 3 - 4 years for an op to remove more cysts

I would say get a wormer down her and do an ultrasound - as I said before our vet did the lat one for free just to confirm that our feral Miss Indie was in the family way but she had kittens in the last 10 weeks and did still look pregnant as she had milk etc when vet checked

A few years ago I trapped a feral who had had kittens, when I managed to trap her for spaying we all thought she was pregnant again she was only small but her stomach was huge but it turned out she wasn't

Get her wormed and booked in for a spay cc, by the time her spay is due if she were pregnant she would have had them by then!  ;)

CC you have your options, worm, clip and ultrasound or book her a spay and possibly find shes already done, i cant see just leaving her when a tom can get in is in anyway an option  :shy:

I think you have to do something CC, it isn't just a pregnancy you have to worry about, there are all the other health issues if she is unneutered.

That's what I was thinking too .. Was just wondering what the verdicts are - fat cat, phantom pregnancy or worms? And spayed or not spayed?  :scared:

She's going to see the vet next week and I'll see what he says regarding her spay, or non spay  :shify:
