Had Poppet booked into vets to be spayed mid Sept as our vet isnt happy spaying before 6 months old. Well .. yesterday she came into season at 5 months and 1 week. Rang vet who wanted us to keep her in until booked appt in Sept. With 3 other cats and the knowledge she can do this again in another 2-3 weeks we asked for appt to be bought forward. Hes agreed to see her next Thursday (starved previously) and will spay only if she has her adult teeth and is of a certain size !! When do they get full set of adult teeth ? ( shes mainly norwegian forest cat who we,d read mature late .. hmmm dont think thats right ) We are keeping her locked in by the way .. Anyone got any earplugs perleeeasee
-
Personally I think your vet is being a bit nit picky. After all in the states they do them at 8 weeks old and do not appear to have any issues. I would find another vets. I know over here with the boys they like to wait till a couple of little things have dropped, but I have had queens done at 5 months old and had no issues. Kittens usually lose their baby teeth at about 2-4 months, so I have no idea as to why your vet will not do her untill she has a full set of adult teeth.
Options are:
Find another vet who is not as fussy
Hormone injection to knock her off call
Go and live in the shed, till she is done!
Seriously it is not nice for her to be going thru this, I would question your vet as to his reasons.
-
I think your vet is just downright stoopid!
Personally I would look for a better and more uptodate vet
-
I agree with everything dabs has put and just want to add one more thing ...... be EXTRA SUPER vigilant when opening and closing doors ... a calling queen is one determined fast little thing .... she wants out and the first opportunity she gets she will try to make a break for it.
~Good luck and fingers crossed you can get her "sorted" ASAP for yours and her sake ;)
-
Funnily enough, I had the same discussion with a vet nurse last night about Gary. They offer a free 5 month check so we went along. I asked if he can be neutered yet. She said they like to leave it until they are 6 months, even though his bits are all there. He still has his baby teeth and she thought he may have them for a few more months - couldnt see why this should be a deciding factor.
I explained about fostering kittens and young cats, and I didnt want him to start paying them too much attention, but she was still relucatant. She did admit he is big enough, and bigger than some females they have in to spay. I then said I wasnt bothered if he didnt get a big "moon" face, and she promptly changed her tune so I guess lots of owners prefer to leave it for astetic reasons! He is booked in for a week`s time.
-
Ahhhhhhhhhhh so thats the reasoning, pleased you have an early appointment ;D
Actually its not a good enough reason and if thats the only reason they are delaying the op, then should at least tell people, cos many just would not understand.
-
Shame having baby teeth doesnt stop them from calling early!
-
Both our girls came into season at just under 5 months altho they are moggies not NFCs ( :Luv: :Luv: :Luv: ).
I thought that was pretty normal. Vet spayed them at 5 1/2 months.
-
Now listen here. I've been searching posts and I can't find a piccie of Poppet and she's mainly an NFC.
It's not allowed I tell ya :smack: :rules: :waiting: :gimme: ......... ;)
-
you ain't gonna try fobbing us off with that tiny wee pic in bottom right of your signature are ya? :)
-
My oh Pete is on here too. Shes got piccies on his post

So there ! lol :evillaugh:
-
Gill - it`s interesting how she changed her mind when I said about the face thing! My BSH Freddie was done aged 9 months but he hadnt come into maturity by then, and I didnt want to leave it any longer. His face is beautiful too.
When I got Lily I asked about getting her done aged 5 months as she was a real monkey about getting out. (She got stranded on a shed roof aged 14 weeks and it took me a few hours to locate her!) :naughty:They said then they prefered to leave it to 6 months to spay her, but if I had had a male kitten of the same age, they would have done her at 5 months and him at 6. Can see the logic in that, but surely she could be caught by a stray tom just as easily?
After the shed "incident" I tried to keep her in but she found out how to operate the cat flap when it was set on "in only"! Keeping her upstairs during the day whilst I was out just frustrated the pants off her and she became very distressed. Then when she came downstairs, she was determined to get out having being confined all day. Eventually I persuaded them and had her done at 5 months. It was easier for me as I was off work over Christmas, and wanted to get her done before I went back in Jan.
Poor Gary is blissfully unaware of the plans for next week :sneaky:
-
I thought most vets did them around 4 months which sounds far more sensible to me.
I have never had to go through this cos all my cats were neutered when I got them and admittedly Misa who is a huge boy has a little head and also very dainty legs and paws........I suppose he was done earlt cos he may have had a much bigger head otherwise but he is so Gorgeous I wouldnt have him any other way. ;D
Dont tell Gary :shify: :shify:
-
Wow Poppet is a stunning beauty :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:
-
Poppet says thankyou Rosella She seems a lot quieter today so we,re hoping seasons over but still keeping her in "just in case" :innocent:
-
Nicter - cats can get pregnant even while not in season, so she needs to be kept in till neutered.
-
Sorry this may be a stupid question, but we have a 4~ month old female and I'm wondering how you can tell that they have come into season. We let her out around the flats (it's reasonably quiet, grassy, no main road, and we leave the door open for her) but I know there are many unneutered males around so we have to get her done before she goes on heat.
Thanks :)
-
Oh Felix
Don't want to sound like I'm telling you what to do but pleeeeease don't let her out any more until she has been spayed. Don't know what else to say. You will know when she comes into season me by which time it will almost certainly be too late.
They become very very affectionate and sometimes start calling (loud miaowing) altho our two girls didn't do the calling bit.
-
Can only echo what Rosella has said
-
The problem is, we currently have 3 adult outdoor cats in the house so keeping her in will be very difficult if not impossible as we don't have a cat flap.
Nevertheless, we are getting her done at the end of Sept, and she is supervised 90% of the time when she is out by us (we both go outside regularly to smoke and she only goes out for small trips). Also our 6 yr old male and our friends 1 yr old male who we are looking after are always trotting around with her so if any male tries anything I think they will be shooed away pretty promptly!
-
Sorry but you must keep her inside until after she has been neutered,,,,,,she will go crazy looking for a mate outside and they will find her, you will not be able to catch her.
-
Perhaps we can bring forward the spaying, but have to get voucher from CP as am unemployed at the moment. Any idea how long that process can take?
-
The alternative to keeping her in is sadly almost certainly that she will become pregnant. I think you know that only too well and the last thing you need is another lot of kittens to look after. The next best thing to keeping her in is to beg and plead with your vet to bring forward her spay operation to as soon as possible. An awful lot can and almost certainly will happen before the end of September :(.
Just seen your last post. I don't know how long it takes to get a voucher but if you explain the urgency, I'm sure CP will understand.
-
You will also have to keep her in for 10 days or so after she is neutered cos she will be wearing a collar to stop her pulling out the stitches and therefore it will be dangerous for her outside.
-
I am not staying in! and I am not going to see the VET!!!!
Poppet
-
:sorry: Poppet but needs must !!
Love your meowmy xx
-
I hate you. your a nasty meowmee
poppet
-
:( :( :(
-
Shes not nasty she is just doing whats best for you so you dont get any more sore throats and you dont feeel weird any more. Then you will be able to play juts like a kitten should ;D
-
I was talking with maisie last night. and she says it will hurt and I will be cold after as there going to shave me all over. this is not kind to kittens. HUMPH!
I will run away the day befor and hide till it's to late to get caught.
Poppet
-
Maisie is playing games with you or just being nasty.........they dont shave you all over, just one little patch which grows back very quickly and it wont hurt cos you will be fast asleep ;D
-
Gill I am finkin u iz a green person. I won't go.

It can be as quick as they want, do ask about bringing it forward. Also get her microchipped.
Although she is mainly supervised by you when out it takes seconds for a tom to whoosh in and chase her off, if she goes missing unneutered then shes guaranteed to get pregnant and without a permanent form of id on her.
For the inconvenience of keeping her in and playing doorkeeper to the others it will save alot of grief.
I would also ask them to glue her rather then stitch, this will prevent the long haul of collar wearing to protect the stitches, she will still need some house arrest after her op tho.

Thanks for the advice. she has been chipped. all done the day after we got her. but glue sounds a better idea and yes a few days to get over it . pooor little thing. I feel so mean but as we do NOT want kits it has to be done.
-
I believe you have to arrange the gluing before you take her so they know :shify:
No Poppet I am definately not a green person ;D
-
Gill its not hi tech so they can ask the morning they take in, that way it will get put on the admission form there and then ;D
-
I know its not high tech but have seen someone else on here ask when they went on the day and was refused...better safe than sorry , I think
-
 they must have a vet who is stuck fast on doing the same every time regardless of situation. Bet they dont take stitches out of ferals :evillaugh: use glue then wouldnt they
-
I wouldnt know cos some vets will not treat ferals and Pav had one....they needed to be the best behaved and if they raised a claw they were dangerous animals and they wouldnt touch them.........sigh
All vets are different and some should not be vets in my umble opininion :shify:
-
Will call vet tommorrow and ask about the gluing just to be on the safe side :)

Ok. I got in touch with CP today and they are sending the voucher out at the moment. They think vets in Cambridge won't neuter until 5 and a half months earliest. That's about 2-3 weeks from now I think. The woman at CP also told me if she gets pregnant by accident in the next couple of weeks it won't matter because they will still do the Op. I will do my best to keep her in anyway for safety's sake.
Thanks for the information on glue, I will look into this, wasn't aware of it as an option :)
-
She could be small for her age, easy to get birthdays wrong ;D
-
I think MM meant to put this ;)

-
Thanks Gill ;)

Both our girls came into season at just under 5 months altho they are moggies not NFCs ( :Luv: :Luv: :Luv: ).
And both my girls started very young too and are 100% NFC! NFCs take years to be fully grown but that doesn't stop them feeling frisky early on
Definately be very very careful with an entire female, they are absolute wotsits if they can smell a boy about and become Houdinis trying to get to a boy. It only takes a second for a determined boy to boink a girl when he's not supposed to and he won't be put off by anything!!
It's not just getting pregnant you have to worry about with if she does get outside as well, they can pick up things such as FIV from being mated.
-
Well have asked vet about the gluing and apparently ours doesnt glue ..just stitch but he says its rare for cats to pull at stitches so although they will supply us with a lampshade for Poppet chances are she wont need it .... Heres hoping !!!
oO Why do I get the feeling your all gonna come back to me now with horror stories of cats pulling at stitches !! ;D
-
no Tilly didn't pull hers! my other girls were already done so I can't say about them ;D
-
I think more do than not!
-
all ths talk when I am NOT going! I like my jacket as it is. and this not fair meowmee is being nasty and has not given me any food either HUMPH

Love Poppet xx
-
Oooo Poppet that was a naughty girl! You really need to get yourself sorted or you'll never be allowed outside and you don't want to escape and then find nasty boys pinning you down and taking advantage of you.
-
Message from Gary to the lovely Poppet: I went out in the car today, very strange. I didnt even get any breakfast.
Then I had to wait in a big room with lots of other cats and dogs. Mummy let a lady look at me, and then she left me!!! I had a lovely sleep, and when I woke up I felt a bit stiff in the trouser department, but nothing I cant cope with. The lady said I must stay in the house till Saturday, whenever that is. Lucky I have Lily and Willow to play with.
Mummy came to take me home, and I had a cuddle with Lily and some nice chicken, and some more chicken cos I was so hungry. Willow and I tried to play chase but Mummy said I should be quiet instead, so we have gone upstairs to play instead where she can`t hear us (Oh yes I can!).
Dont be worried about seeing the green man, I got lots of cuddles and chicken afterwards. :)
-
Fanku for your messiij Gary. I feels a bit less nervuss now I read that. I fink if Im goin to get chicken and xtra cuddles after then it mite be worth it. I will tri very hard to be brave :scared:
I am glad yor feelin ok Gary ... maybe yoo shud pretend you feel pawly so yor meowmy feels guilty and gives you more chicken ... Fink dats wot Im goin to do :innocent:

You have made lots of extra problems for your humans who love you to bits but when you make them unhappy thats not good.
I am sure you will be much better on Monday...........WONT YOU POPPET ;D
-
Poppet, if you are really good on Monday you might get an extra special treat too! :)
Mummy has got me a new little brother, he is called Willow and I love him loads! He came to stay with us a few weeks ago, and offically became my brother yesterday. :Luv2: How cool is that?
It was worth all the pain for a little brother to play with.
