I am really looking forward to this as Joanna goes to the Africat Foundation in Namibia and i have been there and stayed for a wk helping them do the annual health checks on all the cheetahs in their care...Its a fab place... as they do so much rehabi work. Namibia has the highest density of wild free roaming Cheetah in the wild, but they do suffer from being shot at by farmers and habitat lose.. However, the foundation works with the farmers and things are getting better but pressure from the environment and food isnt helping.

The Cheetah Conservation Unit is in Namiba as well run by a American lady.. You can vist both these places and stay there as a volunteer through lots of organisation i sayed there with People Trust for Endangered Species. It was the best holiday of my life! But hard work!

Now I would love to do something like that Cheetahs are my favourite of the big cats.

Wonderful programme - I learnt a lot about beliefs and loved the stories from Japan. Bit grim though, the one about the evil cat.....

Did anyone see the second part? I watched it last (replayed on demand) and yet again it was superb.... :Luv2:

OH fell for the munchkin cat....think she looked like a persian with not as much fur....Sparklecats Tulip with ickle legs! Exotic thats it!  :shy:

What a shame about all them big cats that were living in outrageous conditions in peoples homes....I reckon they seriously need a new law in a lot of their States to avoid this from happening....

I saw it and loved it too.

Especially the Cheetahs in Africa. And totally agree that big cats shouldn't be kept as pets. Those poor tigers of Michael Jacksons!!

Wasn't sure about the munchkin cat though or that cat hotel!

What upset me about the tigers was they mentioned that once they were rescued not even a phone call to see how they were!  :(

I personally dont agree with Munchkins but apparently they can do most things apart from obviously big leaps or jumps.....They said this was a normal mutation but I also know that they do breed them like that....maybe after seeing the mutation!  ;)

Agree aboutt he tigers - they didn't say Jacko's name but we all knew who she meant - I thought it awful too when she said no one even phoned to see if they were ok.  But like you say they are really being looked after now.

The cheetahs were so sweet when they were licking JL's arm - I love it when Bonnie gives me a kiss so to have that must've fely brilliant.

She was the right person to do that programme - she's got such a nice voice and she could almost be feline herself.  Very different from Ab Fab

I found this part a lot more exasperating than the first; breeders that don't have boundaries about what breeds they cross, people with 22 cats in a small flat, big cats being kept in closets.....my partner had to make me a cup of tea to calm me down! :shy:

Loved seeing the cheetahs being cared for at Africat though, and also absolutely admire Tippi Hendren.

I watched both and found the 1st very upsetting with the stories of how cats were treated in days gone by, esp throughout Europe.  What an incredible bunch of ignorant cruel people we were.  I remember coming across disgusting stories of things happening to cats in Prague in days gone by which ruined a holiday there  :(

The 2nd programme also had a fair bit of upset in it but also some uplifting stories too; Tippi Hedren and Celia Hammond.  The lady with the 20 or so cats in one apartment was not good; perhaps not the brightest of ladies but she seemed kind and they seemed clean and well fed.  Certainly did not like the woman who admitted to breeding coz she just liked to be different.  Pillock!   Have to admit I was almost taken in by the cat hotel esp the 24 hour web cam for when on holiday (except the lion mane haircut of course) until I thought about ours being allowed to roam free with other cats they didn't know  :scared:

See, although I have a great respect for Tippi Hedren and Celia Hammond they wouldn't have to do what they're doing if it weren't for ignorant, ill informed people. They're "tidying up the mess" left by other people who take on an animal and don't do any research into what it needs. (That is one of my pet dislikes.)

The breeder definitely annoyed me, and the lady that ran the hotel also did with a few choice comments. I found the stories upsetting in the first one regarding the throwing cats off buildings in the olden days too; I'm just glad the tradition was phased out to toy cats.
