Dear friends,
months ago building works began in Barcelona (Spain) to construct the high-speed railway that will connect us with France. These building works are carried out in areas that are no man´s land, abandoned plots of land and houses and old industrial sites, which are inhabited by abandoned cats or cats that were born there.
In Southern Barcelona demolishing and building works for the high-speed railway were started without any consideration for the cats that live there. Many cats were killed and others injured or mamed and the remaining cats are somehow trying to survive in the vicinity or on the building sites. It´s especially terrible that the responsable authorities for the building works are the city of Barcelona and theCatalan government.
Here in Spain animals don´t have any rights whatsoever. If for once a case of animal abuse reallygets to the courts the sentences are ridiculously low.
Shortly building works will start in the North of Barcelona, at the Sagrera station. In this area about 300 to 500 cats are living at the moment, whose lives are at risk. We, a group of neighbours who look after the cats together with some animal protection groups, have been asking the city government for quite some time to find another space for the cats and to create a controlled colony of cats. To this day we have not received an answer, nothing has been done and we have to conclude that the cats will suffer the same fate as the other cats at other building sites for this project or other private or public building sites. Cats and kittens are buried, crushed and mamed alive by the heavy machinery and the rest is done by car traffic since the street is in most cases the only place where the cats can stay.
We, or rather the cats, need your help urgently. Please write lot´s of letters to the mayor of Barcelona and the Catalan government. Over here, image is everything, tourism is a very important economic factor for Catalonia and you as a potential visitor of the city and the province of Catalonia can move more than we can over here. Below you will find a predrafted letter which you can use, or even better, you write in your own words (if possible, always with a copy to plataformagateraja@yahoo.es ).
