Kate has asked me to let you all know that, broken heartedly, today is the day she has to say her final goodbye to Max. She did ask me to update the long thread but since I am not the OP I don't think I can.
Unfortunately Max is going downhill and Kate and OH have decided that it is time he was helped to the Bridge. I am sure beyond sure that you will all rally at this traumatic time and send your wishes and thoughts for a peaceful transition to the Bridge for dear sweet Max:(

Having been through the loss of 2 CRF cats myself, I just wanted to say how much you have impressed me with you're love and dedication to Max. You know how much of a rollercoaster caring for a CRF cat is and you have gone way and far beyond the call of duty. You have battled for so long and you're bond with Max is so strong and special.
I had 2 years with Tiffy with his CRF, but only 3 months with Maddy. You have done so well to keep Max's condition as stable as it could be and maintain his quality of life for as long as its been. A true testament to your love and dedication.
Sending love and hugs from my raggie gang.

Max passed away peacefully this afternoon at 3 o'clock, exactly one month before his 16th birthday. 17/9/93 - 17/8/09.
I washed him a little afterwards where he was smelly from his struggles today with his tummy and we clipped some of his beloved white fluffy tummy hair and mad tail hair to keep forever. Then we put him in his favourite old leopard bed curled up, with his catnip banana, and we covered him with a mat and sheet and put him in a plastic container. He is going to stay overnight at the vet as it is much cooler there than here. Tomorrow we are taking him to Dignity for an individual cremation and we will come back with his ashes tomorrow afternoon. I could not love Max more, not now, not in the past, not ever. I told him so many times and I hope he heard me.
So did his dad.
Please send your prayers if you offer them for Max and for Swampy. On the vet's suggestion, we tried to show him to Swampy, but he didn't really react, just left his bed thinking there was an obstacle in it. I know he will miss Max terribly, as will we all, but for little Swampy it will be worse.
RIP my baby Sheesh.

My little Max is home. In the end we didn't get one of the sleeping or ceramic cats. Instead we got him a hardwood box with a little motif of daffodils painted on it. We saw it and it made us smile as the first thing Max did as a kitten when he came to live with us all those years ago was to make a waah noise, jump up on the mantelpiece and deliberately bit the flower heads off all the daffs I'd just bought.
It was very hard saying goodbye for the final time. He looked so beautiful, so perfect, curled up in his bed. Dignity were very good, very professional and not at all soft music and creepy like undertakers or with false emotion. They respected both Max and us.
We have put Max on the same sunny bedroom windowsill that he loved to sleep next to and where yesterday was his final resting place. We have a photo next to him. I miss him so terribly, but I don't miss the way he was so recently. I miss my baby healthy Max. Mostly I just feel a very deep sadness that often goes beyond tears. I give thanks too for his life, which is one worth celebrating as he was so very very special.

I miss him terribly, especially at night. Since I've been sleeping on the futon in the lounge after Swampy's accident last september, Max slept in my arms like a teddy bear every night. He also sat on my lap, teddy bear or baby style and watched TV. The things about him that make me smile also break my heart.
I do though feel a huge sense of acceptance about what happened on an emotional not just practical level. To know for 100% that it was his time is a blessing. It still feels so unreal though. I have been so busy nursing Swampy. I think when Swampy too is gone that the truck will hit me with full force. I think adrenalin protects us from that until we stop because there is no little man left to nurse at all.
