Title: weight and feeding?
Post by: Zebedee-n-Me on August 12, 2009, 14:58:30 PM
My kitten Zebedee. :catlove2: is around 6 weeks old now (we think).
Has been weaned for at least 2 weeks, how much should he weigh and how much should we be feeding him?
At the moment we feed him the felix kitten pouch which we mash up with a little bit of water. We feed him about 6 times a day.
How much of the kitten pouch should he get through in a day? Should we feed him between those times if he says he is hungry?
How much should a 6 week old weigh?

Thanks for the help

 :welcome:
I would suggest you take him to your vet for a kitten check, as well as providing worm treatment they can advise if he is the correct weight for his size. The average weight for a 6wk kitten with mum isnt a good comparison for one without as the one with mum will be plumper and eating better.

We have an appointment booked for next week.
I just wanted to get a basic picture as this little guy seems to eat loads ;D (and sometimes want to eat more)
So I wondered what you think he should weigh and how much he might eat?
Thank you  :)

Hi  :)

Glad you've booked for a vet check that's good to do and there is some advice on kittens in our guide section which may be helpful too:

Yup, you have a very young kitten there there there are people on this forum who have raised kittens who may be able to help and I think your vet will be able to tell you all you need to know xx

eta: I have added another link to the kittens one which includes hand-rearing, but seems that's up to around 5 wks and the other advice link is for about 8wks, and 6 is inbetweeny but I suppose they are a rough guide.

The average iv read is 100g birthweight with 100g put on each week, but they vary so much, especially if from a less priviledged background  :(  iv not had any the same, i keep the weight charts for future comparison lol

Has he had any worm treatments? If his tummy copes with his food demands then let him, i find they eat 1/4 - 1/2 a pouch at a time, appetite is something else that varies greatly!

I have just looked at the hand rearing page- thanks.
He eats about a pouch and a little bit in a day and weighs 520g. He still says he is hungry sometimes after he is fed do you think he should have more? or is he just being greedy? :-[

I am absolutely loving him to bits and we havent had any accidents today ;D
My dad works in Spain but is coming home tonight so it will be great if we can have another day like today tomorrow so my dad can meet him at his best :)

if he is still hungry after a mealtime, give him more, you cant really overfeed such a young kitten. Some KMR will help too, you can get LActol Gold from Pets at Home

I would agree with Desley and if he's hungry little one needs the food

That's good then because that's what we are doing.  He has eaten 1 and a 3/4 of a packet today and was completely content!
 :feed: :)

Overfeeding can cause diarrhoea, so keep an eye on his poop  ;D
