Title: Manchester area... blind kitten in trouble! RIP Grace.
Post by: Pinkbear (Julie) on August 01, 2009, 21:33:32 PM
On another forum I visit a rescuer has found a blind that appears blind wanding in the middle of the road. She's a lovely lady but way out of her league and is panicking slightly. Doesn't know what to feed the kitten. She's putting her in a dog crate for the night but need urgent help and advise. Local CP has closed at 3pm she said.

Can anyone talk to this lady or offer a space? I don't think this kitten is completely blind from what she said but obvious sight problems needs investigating.

I now hear kitten has severe trots. Not looking good, is it?  :tired: This lady hasn't got a clue.  :(

She's going to try CP again tomorrow so keep your fingers crossed they can deal.  :wish:

Well..  :innocent:

A purrs member PMd me this morning and various arrangements have been made. The purrs member takes delivery this afternoon. I won't say who in case the person wishes to remain anonymous, but we would all be happy if we knew who it was.  :shoosh:

Hi

The blind kitten is now at Paws Inn and I can confirm that :-

1. Kitten is infact at least a 15 years old female
2. We think she is in kidney failure and has possible thyroid problems
3. Looks like she has glaucoma
4. She has worn a collar previously but is not microchipped

I am sure Teresa will give you an update later on as she decided what is needed next.

She is happy in a pen for now and tucking into some food with a turkey treat.

Oh, god love her...!  :Flowers:

I suspected that the lady that found her didn't know the first thing about cats, so I wasn't wrong there.  :innocent:

Good luck my princess... Aunty T will look after you nicely now and you won't be hungry anymore.  :ahh:

Thank you so much T.... I'm off for a little cry now.  :-[

We have called this delightful little lady Grace, she is in a bad way  just passed blood y diarhoea, will get her vet checked tomorrow and see what we can to to make her more comfortable, she is an absolute darling and I am delighted that she is old,far better to be old and blind than a blind baby if you know what I mean.
The lady who brought her was lovely and knowledgeable to her own species of rescue, having talked she thinks the car she saw may have actually dumped Grace. Thank God for good people like her.

Julie I hope your little cry was tears of joy

Aw... Aunty T!  :cuddle: :cuddle:

I know what you mean about rather be an old dear and blind than be a baby and blind.  ;)

Whatever happens and whatever time Grace has left will be comfy ones, though. That's why I was crying... it could all have so so different but for a string of remarkable coincidences and it feels good to be have been a link in the chain that got Grace to safety.

Aw... I'm off again. Pass the Kleenex.  :-[ :evillaugh:

Grace is simply adorable, been to vets this morning and Andy is going to ring later with results, testing for kidneys, diabetes and thyroid, she hasn't a single tooth in her mouth and Andy estimates 20 years old, catarracts on both eyes and blind. He has given me some kaolin to help will her tummy and prescribed thyroid meds in anticipation; will update when I have results.
Meanwhile Grace the gannet is happily tucking into a late breakfast as she was starved in anticipation of bloods being required.

I have to say she's a carbon copy of dear Teddy (RIP). I scooped him up from a bunch of ferals and he was in a similar state. He wasn't feral but the ferals took pity on him and let him hang out with them.  :) Poor Teddy had such bad teeth you could smell him if he stood at your feet.  We never did find who he belonged to... but can't say I tried very hard as they clearly hadn't taken him to a vet for years.  :innocent: Estimates of Teddy's age went up and up and up with each vet visit.  :evillaugh: We made him comfy despite liver failure and he went to live with Caroline. It was his love of food that stopped Teddy from giving up for so long... Caroline even found him inside her fridge sitting on the shelf gumming the hell out of a cooked beef joint.  Teddy had 9 very happy final months with Caroline before he went to the bridge and we always remember him with a smile of pride that we could do that for him.  :Luv:

Dear Grace sounds and even looks the same as Teddy. I do hope she has at least some quality time before she passes and I know Teresa will try her best to get that to happen.    :blow kiss:

Glucose so so unlikely to have diabetes probs

Thyroid sky high so will start her on medication straight away and hopefully this little flower will bloom again.

I just want to reach out and touch her.  To think of the poor soul, being dumped and lost, in her condition.  I can't stop crying either.

Am glad she's found safe shelter, and thank goodness the lady who took her in cared enough to seek help, regardless of the age she thought this little waif was.

Quick update, Grace has settled well and her tummy problems are almost resolved now we have her feeding carefully controlled, she is still ravenous all the time but that is normal for a cat with thyroid issues as bad as hers, once the meds kick in she will feel less hungry.
Lady who found her has been really good knocking on doors and doing posters but so far no response.

Have only just picked up on this thread. Gosh! It is indeed just like Truman over again. Just looking at her little face fair makes me tear up. God bless the woman who found her, she might not have known an oldie from a youngie but she knew Grace needed help and cared enough to find it for her and thats what matters. Grace is the perfect name for her I think, lovely. It beggers belief that anyone could abandon an old, helpless animal like this. I think about that often with Truman, too, wondering where he came from. One thing I do know is that it was their loss. Every night when Truman is sitting on my chest purring while I read my book in bed I think how lucky I am. Good for you, Teresa, taking her in.

After making me think she was dead yesterday I have decided that Grace is far too comfy in her new plush bed  she sleeps like a baby with an inbuilt alarm that tells her its food time
uses her tray and then gently retires to her cosy bed, Singing Sue ? lazy madam prefers to listen to classical fm in order to save her strength  Another good poop this morning so medication definately kicking in, she is down to 2 pouches, 2 dishes dry and 2 huge bowls of water a day now, wish I knew where she was putting it because shes skeletal.

A quick update on Grace who has not been doing so well the last few days:
Took her to see Andy vet this morning as she had refused all food for over 24hours and hasnt washed herself since she arrived, shes been drinking huge amounts of water though. Andy has told me to stop the thyroid meds (vidalta) for a few days (fortunately I stopped it yesterday) he has given her a steroid and vitamin injection in a bid to get her to eat even though it will not do her thyroid any good,if we can get her appetite back by Friday she will go onto Felimazole instead of vidalta,if no improvement by Friday we must let her go. He said he feels she was just too far gone when we got her and was at the stage where people with owned cats brought them in for PTS, however if we can get her eating we may buy her a few more weeks. Bought her a cooked chicken and she has eaten a little of that so we remain hopeful that this gorgeous lady will enjoy her bed for a while longer.

Grace emptied her large water bowl yet again overnight and has drunk approx 100mls of water in 1 go this morning, she has refused all cat food so I shredded chicken and mixed with boiled water to warm, she took all the liquid but left the chicken and went back to sleep. I am so hoping the lack of Vidalta and the steroid kicks in soon, she is such a dear old girl and to see her like this is heartbreaking.

I`m not usually one for tears but Grace has broken me, I asked Andy what her thyroid levels were when we got her he said off the scale so over 90 ! She deserved so much better and I find myself wondering how long she lived a life of suffering before she was picked up; how many thousands of others are going through hell now, none of them deserve it.
