Yesterday we noticed Maisie our 8 year old furbaby had what looked like mud all around her mouth. I tried to wipe it off but no way would she let me. By the end of the day she had licked most of it off. This morning its back again so we rang vet for advice. They are overwhelmed with work at the mo and nurse said it didnt sound to be life threatening so bring her up on Mon. Was happy with that at the time but now Maisie seems to be hypersalivating and Im wondering if this dark "stuff" round her mouth is old blood. Shes eating and drinking fine with no obvious signs of discomfort yawning with mouth wide open and nothing obvious ( shes not a cat who would let me get anywhere near looking in her mouth ) Vet has open surgery tommorrow so taking her up but just wondered if anyone knows what could be going on. Anything Im reading on dental / oral problems suggests pain and not eating and we,re not seeig that
Dont imagine its related but one of our others has been on antibiotics for a few days with probable viral infection
Thanks

Does she go outside?
Could she have eaten something she has caught?
-
No Gill. She only occasionally goes out and the day this started she hadnt been out at all. Shes not a hunter. She will amble outside sit by the garage for a while then wander back. Shes just eaten and watching her closely there seems no pain at all when eating but does lick her mouth a lot after. This could be cos of the muck round her mouth

I wonder if she's cut her mouth somewhere inside, like bit her cheek or scraped her gum on something?
-
Its possible Jane. Just odd that that its uniform all round bottom lip chin. Bit like shes applied lippy badly lol :innocent:

Just had a thought, it isnt feline acne is it that she has scratched off ?, feline Acne is little black dots in the fur, one of mine had it once and he used to scratch it out and literally make his chin bleed.

Dont think so Daisy. No signs of scratching. Seems to be coming from inside with the dribbling. Not 100% sure it is blood but cant think of anything else that would make it dark brown. Wish I could get a pic of her but shes so damn nervy

Been to the vet this morning. Possible bacterial infection. Has had a shot of long acting anti biotics and to go back in 2 weeks for reevaluation. Nichtmare getting her into basket but was as good as gold at vets .... bless her

Thanks everyone else for advice

Lots of love to Maisie and hope she gets better quick

Old saliva can build up as gunk around the lips, when milly had her biposy she had some strong pain relief and would sleep with her mouth open a little, the dribble dried up and formed a dark gunk, it wiped off easy enough.
Fingers crossed the jab sorts the problem out

That's always the way with our Billy. Well done for getting her there and hope the ABs clear infection up asap. Did vet think it was causing her any doscomfort?

No Rosella. Shes not showing any signs of discomfort even when he poked around in her mouth. Looking quite a bit better this morning and she seems to have forgiven us lol
