My cat, Toby, had major surgery last weekend to have a eye removed. He came home on Monday, ate his tea ok and continued to eat on Tuesday. However, since then he has only been 'nibbling' and thats only when I really push him into it. He went back to the vets yesterday a day early for a check-up. They gave him a long-acting antibiotic injection and I was hoping that would have made a difference (he had pills initially but of course wouldn't take them in his food and there was no way I was going to pill him with his face being like it is right now).
Anyway, I'm really worried. How do I get him to eat something? And why isnt he eating anyway? The vet said he wound looked good and it hasn't caused him any problems. Anyone else had this sort of experience?
He is FIV+ by the way, but his eye problem was unrelated to the virus.

have you tried something really smelly?
-
Like what? I'm open to any suggestions. I tried him on tuna but he ran away from it ... mind you thats probably due to it being dosed with antibiotics ....
-
Sardines in tomato sauce is a favourite in our house ... and usually good for stimulating appetite.
This page also has some really good tips on getting a cat to eat: http://www.felinecrf.org/persuading_cat_to_eat.htm (I know this is aimed at cats with CRF but the principals are the same).
Good luck and fingers crossed Toby starts to eat again soon bless him :Luv2:

almost all cats love liver, though it is not good for them apart from the occasional treat
but you could try poaching a piece and then pureeing it, to add with the liquid to ordinary cat food - it has worked very well for me in the past
-
Applaws chicken and cheese is always a firm fave to get Max to eat, its been the only thing he wanted for the last couple of days. Nature's Menu is also good as its quite smelly, and good quality food.
I don't know what else to suggest hun
What happened to Toby's eye, if you don't mind me asking? He's obviously being a brave wee boy for you
-
Have you tried freshly cooked chicken or fish?
-
I've tried cooked sliced chicken from the deli, also raw chicken (he loves his raw food normally), also his favourite wet foods (Felix and Whiskas). I havent tried liver or sardines though. Someone told me that baby food can tempt cats to eat as well so I might try to pick some of that up.
He ate two chicken slices last night and nibbled on some raw chicken and also whiskas this morning. But it definitely not enough. He is such a cat pig normally.
His eye was removed due to acute glaucoma. It flared up suddenly on Saturday and indeed has been very brave. He hates the e-collar though. Personally, I think they are pet torture instruments created by the devil. :scared:
-
Be careful with baby food, nothing with onions in and check how much salt cos neither are good for cats
-
Poor baby  has he had any pain relief? The other thing that could be making him go on hunger strike is the collar, sometimes it makes them so upset
-
Aww bless him, give him a gentle healing head rub from me and Max

I was going to post the CRF link but Sam beat me to it - some great tips on there.
:get well: Toby

Thank you everyone for all your advice and support so far. I really appreciate it.
Tobys appetite has returned! Indeed, he was patting my face for breakfast at 5.30am today! And he is so much brighter.
However, he now has a spot of colitis. He has his stitches taken out on Saturday so I'll mention it then. Can colitis happen after surgery? Or could it be due to the little treats he has been getting to entice him to eat? (cheese, prawns, roast beef slices ....)
Will probiotics help?
-
Oh ... nearly forgot. New pic of my little man. He is looking much better I think :)
-
He does indeed look better, wonderful cats and their power of recovery. ;D
The colitus maybe an after effect of the op but the vet will be able to tell you.
-
or too many different foods on an empty stomach
but he does look much better, and happier too
-
Probably a mixture of the op - which can cause a bit of nausea afterwards and the different treats glad he's improving though other than that and hopefully his appetite wil return very soon xx
-
If he isnt used to eating gourmet foods then it could well be that, would have thought if it was the GA it would have happened alot sooner then 2 weeks
Its good to hear hes feeling better everywhere else tho ;D

Thought a little update was in order. Toby is now eating well and the colitis has been resolved (due to probiotics I think). Anyway, he is doing really well. Thanks everyone for your support! Much appreciated.
I shall endeavor to post here more often.
Pic of my handsome man!

Glad he's on the mend :) What a hunk :Luv: the lack of eye makes him look even more scrumptious in a rufty tufty kind of way :Luv2:
