Title: Nina has been kept in at the vets, she is v. unwell - My girl has gone
Post by: ems on July 23, 2009, 12:02:56 PM
Hi Everyone,

When I was trimming Nina's nails last night I noticed that her feet seemed quite dirty (looked dark on the toes) and I presumed she had been rummaging in some boxes we are minding from my mum's loft. But when I spread her nails to cut them I noticed the very top of her nails (want to say the nail bed but not sure if that is right) are bloody. Dark though, not fresh blood. She let me touch them as much as she normally does (which isn't very much) and she is jumping fine etc.

Got Jon to have a proper look and he thinks it is from beating up the scratching post a bit to much (she is known as thunder paws because she is so heavy footed/pawed).

The gang are at the vets next week anyway for boosters and check up so will obviously mention it but just wanted to see did anyone have any theories?

My immediate thought is "Is she an outside cat and could it be a victims blood" ?  Ive found bloody paw prints when i hd outdoor cats, and it turns out theyve slaughtered something somewhere  :tired:

If it hers, and she doesnt seem to be in any distress, Id keep a good eye on it (just in case) and then ask the vet to check when you see him/her

She is indoor WC so unless she's been at the packets of ham again she has no other victims... well apart from the dog  ;)  :evillaugh:

Are you sure they weren't like that before? Lu's are really dark at the top in the quick area, almost looks like dried blood.

Hmmm I don't think so Helen, the thing is she is being very co-operative recently (probably silently plotting my downfall  ;) ) so that is how I had a proper look and a rummage around.

As I say she doesn't seem bothered by it, she even let Gibson lick her paws after I had checked them which is simply unheard of  :evillaugh:

They can often get a build up of mucky crud around the top of the claw if they are not good toe washers/chewers. Try some damp cotton wool and wipe at it, if it smears off red then you know its old blood not muck

Well we are off to the vets at 5.20 tonight.

I should have trusted my gut instinct with Nina :(  I've had a feeling she hasn't been right since I had to comb a matt out of her back last week. Which isnt like her at all. And also the problem with her nails (which is definately dirt - thanks MM)

She has been loosing weight which we just put down to being really strict with her food to help her lose a few pounds but she has pretty much stopped eating this weekend. Have managed to get some food down her by hand feeding her last night. Not being sick or upset tummy.

Gave her a check over last night and one of her teeth is looking a bit sore, not on the gum though, it is dark on the tip.

She is very lethargic and wobbly, my poor baby  :'(

So she is off to the vets earlier tonight, any good luck vibes would be appreciated

Well we are home and settled  :)

Our lovely vet has said she thinks she might just have a bit of a bug. She had a good feel of her tummy and said it is slightly swollen but no lumps of bumps. Her temperature was fine too.

Her teeth are fine, a bit of gingivitis but again nothing major, her front fang is just a bit discoloured at the tip.

So she has had an anti-inflammatory injection and we have some Marbocyl to give her tomorrow and Wednesday and she is getting checked again on Wednesday and having bloods done if she hasn't perked up.

But... I nipped back out once she had settled at home and got some Applaws and a tuna and prawn tin has been thoroughly demolished  :evillaugh: She is currently sitting on her chair having a good wash and looking much better  :)

The Purrs good luck vibes have done their trick, thanks everyone

Just out of interest what has Marbocyl been given for.......its a very powerful ab that was given to Franta to try and get rid of the infection in his brain cos its one of few abs that can get into the brain.

Sending lots of good wishes for Nina

Hi Gill, the vet just said Nina's tummy is swollen and feels a bit 'thick' so she has just got 2 tablets at the lowest dose to make sure she hasn't picked any infections up

Am at the  vets and hoping they will see Nina.

Her balance has gone this morning, can't focus and is holding her head on one side. Can't believe it she got up for breakfast and looked so much better then just fell over. Am just waiting in the car for someone to get here. Should be half 8. Poor Nina

It's a good job I took her in straight away this morning as she was worse again when we got the vets, she can't stand up now  :(

They are keeping her in today and doing bloods screens today and giving me a call later, they have said it is either kidney/liver function or neurological  :'(

Will update when I know more, am so upset in work now  :(

Hopefully they'll be able to work out quickly what is going on.

Well I was half an hour late (I had left a message and explained i was going to the vets) and my boss was on the phone saying it was essential I was in to meet up with him at 12  :tired: Just what I need.  :(

I knew she was feeling very poorly when she didn't serenade me all the way to the vets in the car  :-[

Obviously not, and what makes me laugh is that he has a dog so I thought he would understand. Unfortunately I think if it had been Gibson (God forbid) he might have had a different response.  :'(

Thanks everyone  :thanks:

Well her bloods showed increased liver enzymes and white blood cells, she has been given more antibiotics ( amoxycare 10mg) and some Hepatocyl and is going back to the vets on Friday. The vets feeling is that she doesn't want to open Nina up to have a look at her liver at present and I agree, so we will see how the tablets go and take it day by day.

She is still very dazed and confused and struggling to get about, she has also wee-ed in the carrier so is very smelly at present. Jon has just given her the medication and I think we are going to try and clean her down in a bit. Just don't want to stress her out too much so am just putting throws down for her to sleep on which are easily washed. And will have a busy few days sponging the couch down I think.

She is just having some tea (Ocean Fish Applaws) and having a cuddle with Gibson (which is v.strange!) but is purring away and trying to have a little wash

Am going to sleep in the spare room with her tonight to make sure she is ok, and am only in work for a few hours tomorrow then by coincidence am at home for nearly 2 weeks on annual leave.

Will keep you all updated, thanks for all the support, it is very much appreciated.

I wonder if she had a reaction to the Marbocil?

She hadn't had it Des, that's the mystery?

Had a pretty restless night, she was still holding her head to one side and walked into a few things but she has had her next dose of meds (Thanks to her dad) and is much brighter this morning  ;D She even struggled when Jon was trying to pill her this morning  :evillaugh:

Have installed her in the spare bedroom with some nice comfy blankets and she was purring away when I left this morning which was a relief to hear. Oh, and she has used the litter tray

God bless Gibson he keeps trying to clean her which isn't going down too well, a little cuddle she will tolerate, a cleaning not so much.  :evillaugh:

Does anybody have any tips how we can get her nice and clean again from where she wee-ed on herself yesterday? Have wiped her down but she is still a bit smelly, can I just use sensitive shampoo?

I don't think you can use human shampoos, fragrance free baby wipes should do the job  :)

Great news Ems  :)

I love her little Hamster chops  :Luv2:

She has similar head markings to Clapton.

Thanks everyone :)

We saw Austin today who is the principal vet (he had a scrubs type top that had a print on which was "Strays Anatomy" with cartoon cats and dogs all over it in medical gear  :evillaugh: )

He had a feel of Nina's tummy and said she is still swollen, he has put her back on the amoxycare and given us a months worth of Hepotcyl. She is due back on the 3rd September for another check up.

They seem very positive about her progress but he did take me to one side and warn me that she could go downhill quickly as her condition is obviously for the most part still undiagnosed. So just keep in touch with them and bring her in to the surgery no matter how small a change in her behaviour might be.

We have also put the claim in now with Sainsburys Insurance so we should hear back from them soon  :)

My poor Nina is dying, she was doing so well but then stopped eating over the last few days, made an emergency appointment for today by which time her skin has gone yellow and she is being sick with what little is in her tummy. They can feel masses on her liver now too. Basically they have recommended that we say our goodbyes as they are not sure she would even make it to Tuesday.

We are having a nice peaceful night together tonight and she is going to the vets first thing in the morning.

So many of you know this horrible feeling, I feel like my heart is breaking, she is part of me, I can't describe it any other way. I so desperately want to do the right thing. I just don't want her to suffer. My baby looks so tired, she hasn't got any fight left in her.

Am sorry I can't type anymore, thank you all so much for all the support I have had ever since I first joined Cat Chat as a first time meowmy with Nina.

Thanks everyone  I can't tell you how much we appreciate all your kind wishes

She is settled upstairs and just wants a bit of peace and quiet at the minute to be honest. Am setting us a den up in the bedroom shortly so we can have a cuddle and go to bed.

Jon is my strength, he went through everything with the vet while I had Nina in my arms feeling like my legs were about to go from under me. He has made all the arrangements for the morning and what will happen afterwards too.

I just can't believe my poor girl is leaving me, I can't help but doubt that we have made the right decision but I was sitting with her earlier and she looked at me with such tired eyes, I know in my heart that she is fading fast and the last thing we want is for her to be having fits (which Austin the vet has said is the next step) and suffering.

Thanks everyone

She has gone, it was beautiful. She had a sedative first and went to sleep in my arms then had the last injection and looked so, so peaceful.

We were cuddling her telling her how much we loved her and to look for all the lovely Purrs cats at the bridge who would look after her. (Especially a handsome black boy called Max)

I haven't slept a wink going over everything in my mind, worrying that we weren't doing the right thing. Then as I held her and told her I loved her she looked at me, gave a little sigh and had a contented smile on her face and I knew we had made the right decision for her.

Everybody at the vets was fantasctic, we are bringing her ashes home next week in a lovely casket with an inscription on.

Night Night Nina, safe and sound at the Bridge by now until your Mum and Dad are ready to collect you xx

The Greatest Gift

I always knew this time would come,
From the very instant our eyes first met.
How I loved you then! How I love you now!
I made a promise then, and I will keep that promise now...
You will not suffer from a pain that will not heal;
You will not know the loss of a life remembered, now gone.

It is for me alone to make this decision,
The price for the bright joy and pure laughter
You brought me during the time we shared.
I am the only one who can decide when it is time.
When my hope dies, and my fear rides high,
Just when I need you most, I must let you go.

It is for you alone to tell me when you are ready
For without your guidance, I will not know
When to lay my grief, my guilt, my anger
My sorrow and my selfish heart aside
And give you this last gift, this greatest gift.
Your eyes will speak to mine, and I will know.

The pain of this moment is excruciating.
Tears stream down my face in a river of sorrow.
And my heart drowns in a pool of grief.
For you have spoken and I have listened,
And unlike other decisions I have made
This one brings no relief...no comfort...no peace.

For if there´s one thing you´ve taught me,
If there´s only one thing I´ve learned...
Unconditional love has a condition after all,
I must be willing to let you go, when you speak to me
I must be willing to help you go, if you cannot go alone.
And I must accept my pain so you can be free of yours.

Go easily now, go quickly now,
Do not linger here, it is time for you to leave.
Go find your strength, go find your youth.
Go find the ones who've gone before you.
You are free to leave me now, free to let your spirit soar
Rest easy now, your pain will soon be gone.

I pray I will find comfort in my memories...
In the dark and lonely days ahead.
I cannot say I will not miss you, I cannot say I will not cry.
For only my tears can heal my broken heart.
But, I promise you this; as long as I live,
You will live, alive in my mind, forever in my heart.

So I give you this last gift, all I have left to give,
And this will be my greatest gift...sending you away.
It is the measure of my unconditional love...
For only the greatest love can say,
"Good-bye, go find the bridge, we'll meet again,
Loving you has been the greatest gift of all."

Forever and Always... Until Rainbow bridge....
