One of its eyes is almost out, blood coming out of its mouth and bone visible on a back leg. I thought I heard a gurgle when I put it down on the dining table. The only vet open is 8 miles away (vets now) - I would take it there if I thought there was a chance but pretty certain it has passed - please help and let me know if there is a way to check - It doesn't seem to be breathing and I can't detect a heartbeat.
Just went to pick OH up from station - I couldn't leave it there to get run over more of for a kid to see in the morning.
I had a mattress protector in the car from this morning when I went to the dump.
-
mark do you nwant me to ringyou ?
-
omg Mark :scared:
hum i think feel where its heart is, and also check if any air coming from mouth/nose?
Poor little one :( argh must be awful for you

Pretty much what CC has said.
I think in your heart You know its dead Mark
I know You will get it scanned in the morning but just thought you should know that if will smell pretty nasty by then so you might want to wrap it up and keep it outside over night (somewhere safe away from foxes)
Well done for stopping though Mark
-
I'm still not 100% sure - it has fleas which are jumping out
-
Try pinching its ears.
Thank you Mark for stopping and picking the little one up, so many would have just driven by.
-
Sorry to ask this but ...is it looking dead? like not moving, making any noise?
Its possile its had a hard wack, from a car? that would of caused internal bleeding so death would of been iminant :(
hum phone the vets?
-
Try pinching its ears.
I kept playing with its ears and just touching the hair to see if there was any twitching. When I touched its body, to feel for a heartbeat, there was some gurling like body fluids moving around and some more blood dribbled out of its mouth :( - I thought it was warm at the beginning but its little black pads were getting cold. its eye was almost out but not hanging and its back leg bone is sticking right out.
-

It is looking dead. If it had moved or made any noise, I would have gone to the vet. I am still shaking and scared of having an accident myself. I bit the bullet and put my ear right on its body despite the fleas but nothing.
I will take it and have it scanned in the morning. Do you think Willow will know there is a dead cat in the car as I want to take her back re her cystitis back. I have put the cat in a plastic carrier I had in the garden ready to throw as I haven't used it since the stray escaped from it. We don't have a shed or garage so I have balanced it on a pushbike propped against the wall and covered the carrier with rubble bags I had in the car that Julie gave me to put down when we went trapping.

mark do you nwant me to ringyou ?
Sorry - missed this post Michelle - I am certain it is dead now. Thanks anyway  I wanted it to be as it would be in so much pain if it came round. I said to OH that I was running a purrs thread through my head when I saw it. I had posted that I always drive slow in certain roads when cars are parked all the way along as a cat can run out at any time. Rosella posted that it made her cry as she had to take a confidence course because f things like that. As I was thinking about it, I saw the cat in the gutter :'(
It is black. I wanted to knock on doors but it was 12.30 and everyone's lights were out.
RIP poor baby :'(

Mark, i lost 3 cats torta, with what you describing i am sure the poor little one is dead :( My JooJoo had her eye out and blood out of her mouth when i saw her out side my house but her body was warm for a while after.
Bless you for not leaving her/him there.
-
Thanks Pav - in a way, it is a blessing as it was in a real mess. I think I only did what most people on here would do. I am sure it was a hit and run although the cat was lined up against the kerb - if only people didn't drive so fast in back streets - I hope the person drives into a wall and has the same injuries >:(
-
Oh Mark that must have been awful for you, has made me all teary just thinking about it
RIP little cat, safe and sound at the Bridge by now xx
-
I think Willow will sense if there is another cat in the car, cant you ask the vet next to you to scan the cat in the morning?
Unless you can put the dead cat in a plastic bag and close tight. :( :( I am sorry you had to go through this.
RIP little cat. :'(

Some times they manage to get up and try to make it home, depends how badly they are hurt, may be thats why it was against the kerb or some one moved it there. its so sad.
My Piccollo made it all the way through the cat flap, when i opened the door i saw her sleeping by the stairs and Bambi was crying and meowing next to her thats when i realized some thing is wrong.

Just to answer the questions as I need to go to bed as up in 3 hours to take OH to the station. I can't ask the vet next door but could ask Paula (one of the fosterers) to go to another local vet who is closest to where I found the cat. It was either stray or not looked after as it has so many fleas.
Thanks for the support :'(
I wanted to make it comfortable even though it was dead so it is wrapped in a padded mattress protector (I got OH to buy some pure cotton ones in TK maxx the other day as the others were poly cotton :shy: )
-
:'( Poor thing and with fleas too. Thankfully you were there to care for it Mark, it must have been awful for you
-
I have been beating myself up this morning. I was still checking the carrier for any signs of movement. Although it is covered. I can still see the undamaged eye which is wide open. I was wondering if it was closed last night. It isn't dilated which to me would say it was instant? - I really hope so. If it isn't chipped which is likely as if it is an owned cat, it probably wasn't very well cared for, I suppose I should knock on some doors by where it was found. I think probably the best bet is to ask Paula as she lives 1/2 way between me and the vet where I found the cat. This road really is a rat-run as although it is a side road, it is the road that comes off the Thanet way. People bomb along there. It's the same road where a woman in a 4x4 smashed my mirror without stopping.
-
Just read this, Mark
 What a horrible thing to have to deal with.
I think the cat was already gone when you brought it in. Fleas leave a cooling body .... Ive seen this happen with cat road victims Ive been involved with.
Eyes can re-open after death -bodiees make noises - its all a bit grim but the bit that matters is the life isnt there any more - whatever our spiritual beliefs the cat sounds as if it passed very quickly.
Thank you for caring - too many people would have just passed by ......
Sometimes I want to put up a blackboard at the side of a particular bit of road here, with all the cat (and other animal) death details written on it, in the hope that motorists might just stop and think :'(
-
Mark what a brave thing you did, it can't have been easy and must have been distressing for you
RIP black cat, play hard on the bridge sweetheart
-
I was surprised how hard it was. OH wanted me to go to the vet in case there was a slim chance it was alive. Apart from the fact I knew it wasn't, I was trembling and worried that I would have a crash. At the same time, it wasn't brave as I'm sure most of us would have just gone on with it. I told OH I just forced myself to think of it as biology and not a cat (although I was very gentle)
-
I'm so sorry Mark what a horrible thing for you, at least you tried though, lots of people would have pass on by
-
The thing is, if you see a cat, you have to check in case it is alive and suffering and then you go on autopilot.
I was grossed out though  - poor baby :'(
-
Paula is going to take the cat to the nearest vet to where I found it.
-
Went to bed Mark as You had people helping You...
The fleas were trying to leave the body as the body was getting cold.
I remember the guggling happening when my Storm was killed, infact it was the next morning when I picked him up to bury him and it totally freaked me out.
I also remember freaking out and having to go and check during the night that Storm was really dead
Mark I am 100% sure that poor cat was dead last night, You need EVERYTHING right
This is just your mind playing tricks with you because you want so much for the cat not to have died
-
Thanks Michelle
I know what you mean. When I thought I heard breathing, it was my own etc
-
Very upsetting to deal with  My black cat Moses was run over outside my house (previous house not here), I didnt know until I opened the curtains in the morning and saw him lying there. One of his eyes was very damaged and bloody (although I couldnt see that from the window) and I rushed out there praying he was still alive, but knowing in my heart of hearts that he wasnt. :( Its nice that you stopped to pick the little cat up Mark  Someone stopped to try and help my Heidi when she got run over, they came and found me (she had a collar and her address on) she was still just alive, but when I got there, in only a matter of minutes, she'd died, but I'm so glad those people stopped to try and help her and came and found me.
-
Oh Mark, sorry to hear you've been through that but thank you for helping the poor soul as much as you could.
-
Oh what an awful thing to have to see Mark, but as others have said "Thank You" taking the time to make sure and not just passing by as many would! :Luv:
-
I'm sorry Mark, and bless you for stopping for this poor baby  xx
-
Awww Mark, what a lovely man you are, so sorry you had to go through something like this, but really and truely you are wonderful for taking the time
-
Sorry to read this, its a horrible thing to deal with
One of the worst i dealt with one which i was told was dead but when i picked up i could feel a breath and faint purr, sadly didnt make it in time to vets :(
The fleas leaving is a good indication the cat has passed, but also you can check the eyes for any flickers of movement and the easiest place to find a pulse is in the groin.
What angers/upsets me about most of the ones iv collected is they would have prevented if the cats were not out in the early hours messing around in the dark :tired: :(
-
I have stoped to pick dead birds from the road- a pigeon which I was looked at in disgust from an onlooker >:( and also stoped to pick a seagull up off a 40mph road-I just couldn't bear the though of its body being desecrated any more, although it was dead :(
I really dont know what I would do if I found a cat one day, that would shake me to the core :(
I dont believe its in human nature to just walk by, I know I couldn't no matter the animal :shy:
Well done Mark for safe guarding and giving this cat's body the respect it needed to pass over
-
I agree with CC ..... I have stopped on a 40 mph bit of road and moved a dead fox to the verge because I couldn't bear to think of other people running over it's body!
Mark you are a saint for stopping and helping this poor baby.  (Fingers crossed all it's little hopping hitchhickers don't relocate onto you and yours though).
-
What an upsetting experience, Mark
Thank you for caring
-
Thanks everyone. Paula took the cat to the vet next door. Sharon phoned them. The cat was "Female, not bad condition (except dead :( ), unchipped"
I passed through the road on the way back from shopping and knocked on a few doors but I didn't get an answer. I spoke to a woman who was on her way out and she said she didn't know of an all-black cat in her road but would ask around.
-
Maybe you could put a few posters up next time you go back through there - just to give the owners some closure  Edit: Maybe an ad in the local shop too?
-
Believe it or not, there isn't a local shop there  - and this is the same area where the boy was threatened with an ASBO for putting up a lost cat notice  (until I got onto head office and it ended up on the news :evillaugh: )

-
Try a letter/email to the local paper ?
They might be interested in a story ......
-
I don't think there is much of a story unless they wanted to highlight the way idiots go too fast and sadly usually the innocent suffer >:(
-
Give it a go - youve nothing to lose - After all - Ive got someone coming at 10.00am tomorrow to talk to me about goldfish ....... ;)
-
I think this story will have to go on hold as it would involve naming the vet next door to me and I would rather slit my throat than give them any publicity. We have had to endure a dog howling in the kennels all evening and it is still howling this morning. It looks like we are going to be after suing the council for failing to do their job as well now.
-
I just passed the road again and there are two old-fashioned telegraph poles in the stretch. I'm sure they must be owned by BT and not the council so they can't start making threats if I pin a little notice up on them? - it will have to be done as CP as I don't want my number on them and it will look better. I will need to clear it with Sharon first but will do that - hopefully a drawing pin in a telegraph pole doesn't count as criminal damage? :shify:
-
Sounds like a good move to me :)
-
Would someone be able to make me an A5 flier, ideally with CP logo on it?
Saying a black cat was found dead (in a nicer way if that is possible) around midnight on Monday night and if they believe it was theirs, to phone Canterbury & district branch on 01227 266838 for more info.
(Best not to give out too much info re prank callers)
I suppose I could do it but don't know how off the top of my head so might take me ages.
-
I've sent you something Mark :)
-
Thanks Sam - it hasn't come through yet though :shify:
-
Oh ... check you're spsam folder ... I sent it to your yahoo a/c. It'll be from my work addy ssti at novozymes . com
-
Thanks Sam - yes it was in the Nigerian folder :evillaugh:
Is it set to print out as A5?
Just one little thing - would Joe Public know what an RTA is? - Also, any chance of adding Station Road so they know exactly where?
Sorry to be a pain.
Thanks
PS - that poor little cat has been haunting me. I wanted to put its eye back but didn't have the courage :(
-
Can't make any changes at the mo Mark ... I did it on my work computer and I've not got here at home. I can make changes tomorrow if you want.
-
Not to worry - I just realised that I should be able to amend it even if I couldn't create it  - I don't think it was a PDF? so should be OK to change. Hope you don't mind  - better that I get the notice up ASAP so hopefully someone can get closure (best we can do :( )
-
You might wish to say the cat was female as the vets confirmed this..
-
I could add it but was just keeping info to a minimum in case of prank calls? - I don't mind either way.
-
Posters are up. I saw another lady going in her house. I asked her and she said her next door neighbour had a cat. I wasn't up to dealing with it. The post is right outside his house and she said she will ask him when she sees him.
-
Hopefully someone will see the poster and be able to get some closure. Well done for helping Mark
-
I would have knocked but I'm not in the right frame of mind right now so thought it best not to. It might be better coming from a neighbour anyway.
The road is quite wide even though it is a side road. The woman said people accelerate along it >:(
Thanks for doing the poster Sam
-
Someone responded to the poster. He said the chances are as one of his cats has been missing for a few days and the poster was right outside his house, it must have been one of his - he said he has (or had) 2 cats and they usually always hang out together :( - he said he will go and break it to the kids :'(
He said he will hope against all hopes that she walks in tomorrow but deep down he knows it was her :'( - I said it was entirely up to him but he could go to the vet to identify her. He said he would rather remember her playing in the garden. I mentioned it again at the end of the conversation and he said he will see how he feels tomorrow and may decide to go and have a look. I kept telling him that it would have been instant and she wouldn't have known what happened. He said it was a comfort to know she hadn't been lying there for hours in pain. :'(
-
I remember when my Tilly was missing. You have no idea the number of dead black cats I went to view just in case it was her. :'( For me I felt better knowing it either was or wasn't her. Lucky for us they never were (obviously!) but someone else wasn't so lucky. :(
-
He said she was 12 - I thought the cat was much younger but probably hard to tell.
He said he wondered how she had got across to the other side of the railway line. I was about to tell him that I have seen several cats cross the bridge when waiting for OH at the station but then realised I had put the wrong name. I had said Station Road but should have put Railway Avenue.
-
Glad the owner has been found, I know it must be gutting for him but at least he knows now
-
Well - hopefully thats closure for the owner. Its sad, but its better to know :(
-
Yes very sad but I agree better to have closure....
-
Ahhh how sad for the chap .... but at least he has some closure now. Lets just hope he goes to the vet and identifies her / brings her home to RIP :(
-
It was hard to talk on the phone and maybe I said too much but he wanted to know. I did stress that it must have been over in an instant.
