Title: Taking Bunty to vets tomorrow - Operation tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: MrsR on July 12, 2009, 12:41:06 PM
I am not in the right frame of mind for this for various reasons as I am not as strong right now as I usually am but taking Bunty to the vets tomorrow - her breath is smelly, she is drooling and a few of her teeth don't look great - she is eating but loosing weight.   Now ordinarily not a problem but she is an old lady and I am terrified if the teeth have to com out she'll have to have a GA and with her age I am terrified she won't pull through!

Aw! It does sound like her teeth are giving her jip...Poor Bunty and poor you for your worry!  :Luv:

Is sedation not different from having the full GA? Is it still anesthetic I mean?  :-:

If Bunty is otherwise healthy and she needs teeth removing - which it very much sounds like she does she should be fine.  For oldies they do full bloods beforehand anyway, Byron had hers all removed apart from 2 at 23 (although she is very healthy) and Schui had his all removed and he wasn't as healthy with his kidneys but the vet monitored him closely, he was on a drip and he was fine.  The trouble is if they aren't seen to they can cause all sorts of tummy problems which was happening with Byron, she was so much better afterwards, although she still has 2 teeth which couldn't be removed so she has abs for them.  I can understand your worries though

Will find out if sedation is possible then - def prefer that to a general.

Everything is much safer for oldies these days, fluids and better GA drugs makes it all much better. Make sure she has bloods before hand so they know what they are dealing with. Its amazing how much difference having their teeth out can make, really improves their life  ;D

Spike had sedation for a retained baby tooth, but they have no roots so very quick removal process, cant see it would be ok for a full dental

Aw hunnie, I totally understand your concerns, I've got to get Max in for a dental, need to make an appointmnet in the next week or so, we only had to delay it before with his sudden blindness.

The anaesethic is worring me too, but due to BP, kidneys and thyroid, if Bunty is healthy, there should not be any reason for concern  xxx

Good luck - I can't see them doing a dental with just sedation though. Make sure they do full bloods, and fluids if they show any need to, but I have had old cats go through dentals - Tino had one at 17 with hyper-t and high liver values with no fluids (not sure why actually) and Zi had one at 18, but all her bloods were normal.

Nikki, how old is Bunty? Jack had a dental about a month or so ago and I was just like you - utterly terrified. He's 15 next year and I'd been told by so many people about the risks of GA with older cats.

In typical Jack fashion, as soon as he woke up he struggled to get a cuddle (he's a mummys boy when he's ill) and tried to chew out the drip they were keeping him on! Once home he wolfed down some biscuits despite me trying to give him softer food and then pretended he needed the loo (he hates litter trays) so I'd let him out and tried to escape out of the garden..... :tired:

Vets have given Bunty a steroid injection and anti-inflammatory injection that will last 2 weeks then back to sdee them in 2 weeks and if the injections haven't helped its a GA for the tooth out - its 1 molar thats not good.    Vet has said that with Bunty's age, etc etc that she is very high risk for a GA.   I asked about sedation and they said they wouldn't do it due to the pain that she would feel.

Bunty really freaked at the 2 injections as she is a little dehydrated and was extra sensitive.   She has lost weight in the last 2 weeks and they weighed her and said the weight loss was obvious but not worrying.

They listened to her heart and it was fine and said they will do bloods in 2 weeks time if the injections haven't helped to double check everything before an op.

SOooooooooooooooooo hoping the injections help as I am terrified about her going under.

I just cannot loose another cat so soon after Sofa and Sylvester.

As long as it is kept at bay. bacteria from bad teeth is apparently one of the causes of CRF and other illnesses, including arthritis. I think I pushed my vet the last time as he planed on taking 4 teeth out and leaving the last 2 as he said because they weren't rotten, they would be hard to remove. I told him that Clapton had been through so many dentals it really wasn't fair and if I was back in there in 6 months, I would not be happy - he took them all out. It really gave him a new lease of life. I'm sure they are more comfortable with no teeth than 2. I'm sure she will be fine

btw - I saw this one one site
"You can also give CoQ10 to assist with healing...10 mg daily as well as Ester C...100 mg twice a day."

Yep, I was disappointed that all her teeth hadn't been removed Mark and that she has to take abs on and off but....the vet said they were too far into her jaw some cats just are like that (Schui was able to have the lot out)  it could have broken her jaw - I would not have wanted that to happen  :( so the abs are the only solution but her mouth and tummy have been tons better.

Hope the injections work

bacteria from bad teeth is apparently one of the causes of CRF and other illnesses, including arthritis.

My vet confirmed the same last time I saw her, that's why she's so keen for Max to have his dental ASAP, as it could help his kidney function in the longrun.

We're booked in on Friday for a check-up and to see if we can go ahead with his dental.

Well its 2 weeks and we are back to the vets tonight at 6:50pm.

The 2 weeks injections did very good so hoping she can either have them again or another injection of sorts rather than going under for an op.

Glad she is getting better  :)

I know having his last teeth out improved Clapton's life so much - he suffered for years with bad teeth but the vets only took them out in dribs and drabs. When he had the last 4, the vet intended taking 2 out leaving him 2. I said to the vet that I wouldn't be happy if I was back in with Clapton in 6 months with a bad mouth - they took them all out!  :)
I am convinced having bad teeth for so long is what caused his CRF.
