Title: Sylvester had an allergic reaction- any ideas???
Post by: heather-kitty on June 26, 2009, 20:56:53 PM
Hi everyone

I had to take Sylvester to the vets on Monday as all of a sudden he came out in lots of bumps and scabs on his head. I tried to get a decent pic of it but this is the best I got!-

The vet said that it was an allergic reaction to something. She gave him an anti-biotic injection and a steroid injection which, thankfully seems to have done the job and his head is now much better.
I was wondering if anyone else's cat has had anything similar happen?
My cats are all indoor cats and my other 3 didn't have anything on them at all. The vet did ask if I'd done anything different at all. The only thing I have done is dig out some vet beds that have been stored in a cupboard for some time which I put in the cats beds. I wondered if perhaps dust mites or something may have caused this?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Heather

awww the poor love, not sure what could have caused it - I suppose it could be one of many things really but I'm glad the injection has helped

Poor boy, I hope this totally clears quickly

It could be a new perfume, cleaner, just anything you have opened for the first time and not even thought about it.

Poor baby, that looks really sore :care: Strange how he was the only one to get it, at least the jabs seem to be clearing it up

It looks a lot like the strange lession that Ollie had on the back of his neck after an injection. It took several months to heal, in part because Ollie was able to scratch it which would make it worse. The vet twice gave him a steroid injection to help with the itching but it still took about 2 months before the fur started to regrow. Eventually she gave me Cothivet to help dry it up and form a scab . Cothivet is a rather nice liquid made from plant extracts - it smells like lavender and rosemary! Ollie didn't seem to mind having it applied. That was a big help and now he just has a very small bald patch. The cause of the reaction is still a mystery. I did change vets when the lession first happened because I was not impressed with the first one as Ollie has had other strange reactions after treatment there and they seemed not to be bothered. So, unless anything else more serious develops don't worry if it takes a while to heal.

Being indoor makes it more of a puzzle doesnt it, its possible an insect could have bitten him, iv been attacked by a gnat like that before, hungry things they are  >:(
