Looks innocent doesnt he  :sneaky:

He is lovely....Was it cancer on his ears?
Yep, hes a total sun worshipper, he has a spot first thing that catches the first few rays of sunlight and then moves round the garden with it, the others like shade but not him

HE is lovely - can't believe it has been 6 months though!!
Its gone so quick, he first turned up may 08 so has been a year. My neighbour was going to, then wasnt, then was, then got evicted and left him  :(

He had skin cancer on his ears Lisa so had to have the amputated, easily preventable by applying a high spf sunblock

He's a very handsome and gorgeous boy  :Luv2:

Likewise Maisie is adorable  :Luv2:

This might be a daft question, but is their hearing affected at all?  :shy:
Title: Re: Proud of his hairy ears

We.re questioning that Clare. We.ve only had Maisie 6 weeks and there have been times we arent sure if she,s hearing properly. No matter how quietly OH creeps around she hears him and bolts for cover ( shes still pretty nervous ) but one of our other cats on 2 occasions has growled at her and it appeared she didnt hear him or chose not to take any notice ! Vet says it shouldnt make any difference to her hearing but Im wondering if she hears some pitches and not others. How on earth do you test the hearing of a cat ??

Yup, that's always the test I reckon  :evillaugh:

Even my boy Max who has just gone blind can seemingly find his way to wherever they are at breakneck speed

I was wondering about the hearing issue as they normally do their 'radar ears' when they're listening, so wondered if that may affect their ability to distinguish direction of sound?

Maisie is gorgeous  :Luv2:
Gooey has his eye on a lady that cov cats has in  :sneaky:

It doesnt seem to affect his hearing at all, hes pretty bombproof so maybe its maisies natural flight behaviour  :-:

Gooey and Maisie look fuzzy and innocent without their ears, Dougie's one ear makes him look like a bit of a rogue :evillaugh:(http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s320/Bagonabike/Dougie/Dougiecourtyardsun.jpg)
I was wondering about the hearing issue as they normally do their 'radar ears' when they're listening, so wondered if that may affect their ability to distinguish direction of sound?

You can still see Dougie's "stump" doing radar, but it must make it more difficult for them to pinpoint sound.

Well done for adopting Dougie - pretty cute - I adopted Bonnie nearly 2 years ago and although she has both her ears you can see something is missing in this pic.  :Luv2:

Cats protection have given Maisie a November birthday and a guesstimated age of 8. Shes settling in pretty well although still  nervous around anyone other than me. Shes investigated all the downstairs rooms but wont venture upstairs .... Maybe she lived in a bungalow at one time or is just plain lazy !!! lol. Shes a little porker and would eat 24/7 if we let her  :innocent:

Gooey is 12 Baggy, he says dougie can join the gang as being one eared is pretty unique!

He gets suncream as he allows des, not the easiest of cats and he gets very upset being fiddled with  :( not one i will be able to med very easily when he gets poorly.
Had a worry with his nose a few weeks back so got my friend round to assist, the suspected 'growth' was a bit of old cruddy food  :innocent: hes such a grubby old man

Dougie is really chuffed that he can be one of the gang! ;D
Once he's allowed out further than our courtyard we'll be putting cream on his nose and ear (for him to lick straight off!).

Was asking about ages as was wondering what the average age is for them having sun-related problems, but suppose it varies massively.

They both look great though (and Bonnie!) :Luv2:

Maisie was picked up as a stray so have no idea how long she had been "in the wild" although shes not a feral. I guess being exposed to the elements put her at higher risk of sunburn than homed cats

When Pebbles had her pre-cancerous nasal scabs (she was 11 then), I think the vet said the average age in this country was 10, but she was an Australian vet where it is obviously seen much earlier. I would start getting him used to the suncream now personally - some sites even recommend putting it on if they are only going to be inside, but I dont' do that. Neither Sam or Kizzy appreciated me putting theirs on yesterday.

They are predicting record temperatures this week so really important  to keep cats covered? - Are black/Dark cats OK in the sun?

I think they should be Mark unless they have very thin fur. They will probably feel the heat more as dark absorb heat, doesn't it?
