As many of you know, Korky has had CRF for about 3 years now but despite worsening numbers he remained clinically well until about a couple of weeks ago when he back legs started to let him down. I know this can happen in the later stages of the disease but the onset was so sudden and the progression so fast. He's seen two vets and both say the same thing - arthritis of the spine. Because of his CRF he can't have NSAIDS so basically there is nothing to be done. I was hoping a blood test might show he was deficient in potsassium which can be treated but it hasn't. Its breaking my heart to see my big, strong boy so reduced. He can hardly walk at all and I think his quality of life is probably unacceptable. Its so hard to think of letting let go though - he's still eating, his coat is lovely and his eyes are bright. But he spends most of his day under the bed, just coming out to eat and use his tray. I've got some homeopathic medicine to try and the vet said if we don't see an effect after 2 weeks then its unlikely to happen. One week has passed with no response - in fact he's worse - so please send some positive vibes his way if you've any to spare.
-
Sending lots of positive vibes  The fact that he's still eating, his eyes are bright and his coat is good all sound quite positive though, maybe there is some hope?
-
Sending lots of good wishes for Korky
-
Sending loads of positive vibes for Korky and lots of
-
 awwww poor boy, loads of positive vibes to spare for Korky Carol
-
Thinking of you both and sending positive vibes Korky's way
-
Hoping there's an improvement for Korky soon.
-
I am so sorry to hear this, and it is so much harder when they are still bright in other ways and it is just their legs that let them down. I hope that the next week can show some improvement, and if not, you can find the strength to do the best for your little man.
-
Sending positive vibes to Korky and yourselves~~~~~Hope things improve! :Luv:
-
Lots of love and positive vibes for Korky and big  for you xxx
-
lots and lots of positive vibes and hugs to you and Korky  xxx
-
I am sorry to hear this and am thinking of you both
-
 fingers crossed he improves.
Have you considered acupuncture?
-
Well his legs are a bit better this morning - nothing dramatic of course but he was on the bed rather than under it when John got up (not our bed - its what was my mother's bed downstairs) and he went for a little walk outside which is something he hasn't done for about a week so the vibes are having some effect - thank you. I have another concern now though because he's not drinking enough. He had upped his intake to keep pace with his increased urination but he seems to have dropped back again so I have to keep trying to encourage him. If that continues I don't think we'll have long.
-
Sorry Carol
Have you tried Rubenal - not sure if it would help but maybe worth a try
-
Oh Carol... poor Korky :(
Sending positive wishes that he may yet have a quality of life and some more precious time with you.

I think we may have had a reprieve - I hope it lasts. His legs are still a problem but he's much brighter in himself and is joining in with life. Our friends who live in France are visiting and they are Korky's biggest fans (they cat sat for us last year when we came home for a week). As soon as they arrived Korky was out and jumped (well scrambled) onto Michael's knee purring like a motorbike, and he's no longer hiding under the bed. He looks more relaxed as well - all week he's looked uncomfortable even when he was asleep.
-
Glad to hear Korky seems a little better
-
The not hiding under the bed is a good indication that he must be feeling better in himself, may it continue! :Luv:
-
Glad to hear he's feeling better, the fact his fan club have come all that way especially to see him has obviously done the trick ;)
-
Glad to hear Korky is feeling better but still sending those healing vibes for him
-
I am glad to hear he is seeming better in himself.
-
Just read this and I'm so pleased Korky's enjoying his doting visitors and long may it last
-
I hope Korky's improvement continues :)
-
Since his problem in June we gradually saw a return to the Korky of old and I had begun to hope that he might be good for another year but I fear its not to be. In the last 2 weeks he has been vomiting most days (up until then he was hardly ever sick). SEB has had no effect and Pepcid made him worse (apparently it can do that if the numbers are high which Korky's are). I fear things can only get worse from this point on and I don't want that to happen. I have to be strong for him and let him go while he still has some dignity. I don't think he's in pain, just tired and fed up, so we've decided to give him lots of love and cuddles until Monday (when his favourite vet get back from holiday) and if he's no better we'll help him to pass. My heart is breaking.
-
Sending positive healing vibes to Korky...I do hope he can pick up over the weekend, My thoughts are with you all! :Luv:
-
My heart is breaking for you, Carol. My thoughts are with you at this time.
By putting Korky's interests above your own, you will be taking his pain from him and upon yourself.
-
Gwen out thoughts are with you at this time
-
So sorry that Korky is not responding to treatment and I hope you have a wonderful weekend with him
-
Oh sweetheart, my heart is breaking for you, I know only too well how you are feeling right now
Enjoy every second you have together, and if Monday comes and you still feel the same, then you will be giving him the greatest give we can give our furbabes and set him free
-
Thinking of you both Carol
-
Hope that Korky is feeling better over the weekend
-
Love to you and Korky
-
I am sorry that he has started to decline again. i hope that he can rally round, but if not, you will do what is right for him - he is a very lucky cat, to have had such good care all these years. Enjoy your weekend with him, you will be in my thoughts.
-
Thinking of Korky and yourself today and wishing you both well x
-
hugs to you both
-
Well he hasn't been sick since Thursday and is eating but he obviously has a big problem with acid as he licks his lips and swallows much of the time and he still looks exhausted and fed up. He sleeps a lot but thats OK - its when he keeps moving from place to place and can't seem to get comfortable that it tugs at my heart strings. I really don't know what to do for the best. Of all the cats it has been my privilege to share my life with, Korky has always been the most the most docile but also the most difficut to read. He just seems to accepts everything - I amost wish he would cry (not really but I'm sure you know what I mean).
-
awww I know what you mean
glad Korky hasn't been sick and has eaten, that is good he must feel a little better for that
-

-
Glad he has stopped being sick, even though he seems nauseous. I think you are probably best seeing how you go on with him tomorrow, and maybe asking the vet for advice on Mon, but if he is struggling to get comfortable, that will make him feel worse
-
Sorry I have only just seen this Carol.
I know excatly what you are going through
Don't have the answers for You sweetheart, its so hard to know when is the right time.
I am so pleased i didnt pts on Monday like i was going to.
Thinking of you both xxx
-
I've just seen this too Carol. We are going through the same thing with Max. I feel so much for you. My love to you both
-
Lots more love to Korky
-
:care: :ahh: :grouphug:
-
Sending you and Korky one of these: :care:
-
:thanks: for all the good wishes - I think they're working. I certainly won't be making the appointment tomorrow anyway. As I mentioned on Max's thread, he's done 2 good poos and seems quite comfortable now. I'm persevering with the SEB - I've made the 'syrup' thats mentioned on the feline CRF site and that seems to go down a lot better than the powder. I'm trying to give him regular small meals with added SEB so that he's always got something in his tummy to combat the acid and doesn't put too big a load on his kidneys all at once with a big meal. Its not easy though. When he's hungry he's HUNGRY and begs for more. If I don't give it he just goes away and sleeps and I don't like to wake him to feed him.
-
I am glad he is seeming comfortable, fingers crossed for him.
-
feeling hungry is a really good sign Carol. Nice one Korky, you keep eating boy
-
Good to hear he's doing well

-
Please stay a little longer Korky :catlove2:
-
Sorry I haven't replied to all your good wishes sooner. I'm embarssed to admit that I've become very superstitious about it all and I'm beginning to feel like the boy who cried wolf :-[ Each time I've posted that the end is near he's perked up so I'm nervous of saying he's improved in case he takes a turn for the worse. However, deep breath, he's doing really well at the moment. I just have to accept that we are on the roller coaster that is CRF and he will have good days, bad days and adequate days. So long as the good and the adequate outnumber the bad then he stays :Luv2:
-
Thats great news and I hope Korky continues to do well, You can Korky you can ;D
-
Ah yes, the CRF rollercoaster is certainly full of ups and downs, but Korky sounds like he's doing just fine right now, and long may it continue :Luv2: :) xxx
-
Im glad he has well and truly perked up, must be a big weight off your mind also! :Luv:
-
I know just what you mean Carol with the crying wolf and superstitions. This terrible illness can make them feel so dreadful and then they rally. I'm so pleased that Korky is in a better spell. It is very likely that you will know when the time does eventually come, or at least I have with 3 of mine who all had CRF. Little Max was so ill and on the last couple of days his eyes drifted away into the distance as if he had given up.
I hope you and Korky still have a good long time together
-
I've changed the title of this thread because Korky is doing really well. Today he has helped me to make the bed :) which is something he hasn't done for ages and has also done a bit of gardening. I'm still feeling superstitious though so I hope that saying this doesn't result in another relapse.
-
:wow: aww bless him, well done Korky
-
:Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

I am really pleased he has perked up

good good good

Poor Korky's legs have gone again. He was doing so well, he's been jumping up on things, managing the stairs without problem and, the thing that made me grin from ear to ear every time I witnessed it, lifting first one back leg then the other straight up in the air to groom his tummy. He's not been sick for weeks and was eating normally - I'd even got him back on renal - so this has a come as a bit of a bolt from the blue. I so much hope that he can come back from this but it feels different this time - his front legs are wobbly too and he's off his food which is very un-Korky. We have a vet appointment for mid-day tomorrow and its our favourite vet so I'll be guided by what she says. I know everybody is quite rightly sending all their vibes to Teresa but if you could find a few more for Korky we'd be very grateful. :thanks:
-
I'm sorry to hear that you have cause to worry about Korky again, Carol, and let us hope that this is just a blip  Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Everything crossed for Korky and some vibes coming your way
-
Bless you all for your kind words and support but its not looking good. His legs are getting worse by the hour and just don't seem to belong to him anymore. He struggles to get up when he's been sitting/lying and can only scramble about a metre across the floor before he collapses down in an ungainly heap. The most heartbreaking part of all this is that he's mentally alert :'(.
-
Fingers crossed for your boy
-
 Here's hoping Korky improves.
-
I don't know why, but I suddenly thought of Korky only last Friday...

Korky let us know it was his time so we said our goodbyes this morning. We brought him upstairs on put him on the bed with us for final cuddles. He was helped peacefully on his way just after mid-day with his mummy and daddy holding him. We told how much we loved him, and that his granny would be waiting to take care of him on the other side. I know we did the right thing but oh how it hurts :'(. Its been very grey and dismal here all day but as we came out of the vets a shaft of brilliant sunlight fell on us, and just as quickly was gone. I like to think it was sign.
-
So sorry Carol
