Title: Think Dougie has a cold...updated - clean bill of health!
Post by: Baggy on June 18, 2009, 21:05:12 PM
After settling in so well it looks as if poor Dougie is going to have to meet the vet tomorrow :(  As soon as we came in this evening we noticed green pus in the corner of his eyes, and his nose looks grubby and wet.  He's only nibbled at his biscuits and wet food today.

He's bright in himself, but a little bit subdued hopefully he's just caught a cold.

Dougie says thanks!  His eyes looked a bit better this morning, and he cleared his plate overnight but he's booked in for 6pm just to be on the safe side.

Dougie was a complete star at the vet, incredibly well behaved even though he was poked and prodded from every angle.  The vet said what a lovely temperament he has :Luv2: and also that he was a very nice looking chap.

His gums also look very sore (and his breath is really manky) so she thinks that is affecting his eating, but can't rule out a virus.  He's had an anti inflammatory steroid, and has a course of antibiotics.  She de-gunked his ears, which were incredibly waxy   If he's not eating more tomorrow he'll have to go in again tomorrow, and if he is eating, needs to go back on Monday for blood tests to pick up whether it's a bug or an infection in his gums...

Either way it looks like his dental is going to need to be sooner rather than later.  On the plus side she said she couldn't hear much of a heart murmur, and his temperature is fine!

Since coming home he's, eaten some ham and some tuna Almo, and took his antibiotic with no problem.  He's a true gent, hope he manages to eat well this evening.

Glad to hear this - just a warning if they do decide to take bloods, depending on what kind of steroid they gave him, they can stay in their system. Sam had a 2 week jab and we had to put his bloods off for a month to make sure they weren't going to affect his readings.

Interesting about the steroids, am pretty sure she said short acting but will ask on Monday.  He is eating much better today, though prefers it if we sit with him while he eats.

He felt well enough to explore rafters in our little outhouse this morning

How did Dougie get on today?
Thought I'd wait for all his blood test results before updating...but overall, good news ;D
Blood tests showed he is slightly anaemic and his immune system is reacting to something, but the vet thinks this is probably his teeth and doesn't think there is any concern.  His gums are still very sore at the back so he's to have two back teeth out - the rest are ok.
He's eating really well now, which is a relief to say the least!
Poor chap was very good at the vet, and is still taking his Antirobe without any fuss :Luv:

Phew, Dougie's dental went well, though he's still rather groggy from the anaesthetic.  In the end they removed 5 teeth - he doesn't have many left as there were already 8 missing! He's still got his fangs, nibbling teeth and one back tooth.  He is now the proud owner of a microchip as well.

The vet nurse thought he was great, he was purring each time she went anywhere near his pen.
Back to the vet on Friday for another check up and then hopefully the poor chap can get on with relaxing.  Every time he gets into a carrier he must think he's either going to a new home or to have a bodily part removed  :(

:thanks: everyone for your good wishes, Dougie M had his check up today and the vet says his mouth is healing really nicely.  She also commented that his coat has really improved (which it has), and he's gained 200g since his first visit.  He doesn't need to go back unless we're at all worried - vet says he really is a lovely cat and hopes he can get in some good "home time" and really settle in properly now.  It's so nice when vets seem to really like your pet!  :)

Dougie seems to be more or less back to normal after the op and has definitely found his eating mojo now!

Don't mind at all - you can do both! Dougie wouldn't be with us if it hadn't been for you :)
I sent Niall a pic of him just after he arrived but don't know if it got through ok or not, he could put one on his web site rehoming success section if he ever has time!

Yes, I think sun cream for his nose and remaining ear are going to be essential!
He loves going out in the back yard as it's a sun trap in the evening - and keeps looking longingly out of the garden window during the day, but he's not allowed out just yet... 8)
