... that its now illegal to sell cats in pet shops?
I was wondering around my local shopping centre yesterday. They have a pet shop there - a pretty awful one that I never really go to but drift in every now and again to perhaps buy some treats for the ginger terror.
You can just imagine my horror as I saw 7 beautiful 9 week old kittens in the window for sale. Prices ranged from £90 for a black one to £120 for a tabby. Not even pedigrees .. just cute little moggys. They looked healthy ... running around and playing and very very cute. But I didnt like to see them in a window display like that and in any case, I think its illegal. I could be wrong about that though - does anyone know?
I had noticed a few months ago that the pet shop had 'adopted' a cat. The cat is still around - I see that they leave out food for it. But its not in very good condition - I wonder if its Mummy cat! Plus they have this beautiful parrot in a big cage that is half bald because its pulling its feathers out (because its frustrated and bored no doubt).
I'm not sure what to do. I'm uncomfortable about the kittens but am most concerned about the condition of the adult cat and the parrot. Advice much appreciated!

I thought it was only possible to sell pets if you have a license from the council?

I think you need to contact council and check if they have a license

The chances are it's perfectly legal >:( loads of petshops still sell puppies and kittens :'( even Harrods still does too. :censored:

I defo agree that speaking to the Council in the first instance is a good idea, to check if they have the appropriate registrations in place.
Beyond that, I'm not sure hun.

There's a dreadful petshop round my way which even has a sign outside saying 'we buy kittens'. How utterly irresponsible >:(

I have never seen a pet shop selling kittens :shy:

Believe it or not cc, when I was younger my nana (RIP) used to take me into the B'ham pet shop....the one in the town centre...they used to sell puppies & kittens in a big wooden pen with a mesh lid on! ;)

I've reported a local pet shop too and never heard a thing back despite chasing them up. >:(

Just this morning, in Tolworth, Surrey, I went into a pet shop to see if I could buy Mr T and Chloe's favourite cat treats .....
When I realised that the shop sold puppies and kittens I left - and I managed to walk into the shop door as I had tears in my eyes ......
At least I was with-it enough to tell the entire shop-full of customers exactly WHY I wouldnt buy anything
I wish I could rescue them all, but even if I could - it would just have increased their sales and theyd bring in more animals. >:( :( >:(

Maybe a petition should be started to outlaw selling cats and puppies in petshops?

While we're on the subject, I'd much rather see a ban on selling any animal in pet shops. I have seven chinchillas whom I love dearly, and it breaks my heart every time I go into a pet shop and see the conditions of the chinchillas there :'( In my opinion, pet shops should be limited to pet supplies only, and that the sale of actual pets should be left to responsible breeders and rescues. Imagine the reduction in the number of pets needing to be rescued/rehomed if pet shops stopped selling them in the first place!
