Title: Is this normal for a mom cat?
Post by: Rosella moggy on May 11, 2009, 08:48:15 AM
As a few will know, we homed 2 kittens and their ma at the end of last January.  Mom (Dinah) now constantly hisses at kittens and clouts them.  No one ever gets hurt.  We found same thing happened when we 1st homed Tommie RIP with his mom about 20 years ago and she left home to live with neighbours  :-[.  Thankfully, whilst Dinah is a bit of a roamer, she also loves her grub so returns regularly throughout the day to be fed.

So is this usual and if it is, how long does it normally go on for?  She is very cuddly otherwise  :-:.

my old boss let her cat have kittens (she was a bit naive on the surely she won't get pregnant just going out once!!)  and kept on of the litter - unfortunately they never got on once the kitten matured

The mum that I took from Angie last year was never really interested in her kittens once they reached 6 months, even though the kittens wanted to be with her.  She would hiss at them etc, although never caused them any harm.

On the other hand, Emily, a white mum I took in loved all her kittens all the time and they finally had to be re-homed otherwise she would have continued to try to nurse them into their old age I think (even though she was neutered once they were weaned).

When I got my first kittens after a couple of weeks the mum recognised them but they didnt want to know her.

My aunt has also had cats that have had kittens and stayed in the family home, one mum left home because of the older kitten never to be see again

Then she has had cats which let one of the kittens suckle untill 8 months old, so I would say it depends on the mother cat  :shy:

Think every Mum is different (so i have learnt from here)

My Issey still loves her 4 kittens and they are 4yrs old, she still cleans them all and Rocky still suckles from her  :Luv2:

My Fairy hisses at anything and anyone, including her kittens that are now 18 months.
Some Tom cats chase their mum away when they grow up  :(
