Title: Spaying cats in season
Post by: Rosella moggy on April 27, 2009, 09:46:02 AM
Millie and Ruby are booked in to be spayed this Thursday.  Millie came in season well over a week ago so that's over but Ruby came into season over the weekend and is "full blown" if you catch my drift  today.  I rang vet and spoke to receptionist (unsure if she's a VN, think she is).  She said they perform spays on cats in season as it's difficult to time coz cat's are in and out of season so frequently , it's basically up to me whether to go ahead or not. Any thoughts?

Tilly was in season when she was spayed - I didn't actually know she was because she is bengal and quite mouthy anyway and I'd never had a kitten before so didn't really know the signs but all went well and she recovered within hours

When a cat is calling all the normally tiny blood vessels swell with blood, so spaying does carry a slightly greater risk because of increased bleeding. In an ideal world best to wait a few days longer, however its not an ideal world and we all know the added risks involved in delaying things.  Also it will be better for Millie and Ruby to be done at same time and if you wait for one to finish its odds on the other will start. If vet is happy then go ahead. Remember to ask for intradermal sutures and glue.

Id go ahead with the spay if the vet is fine with it....I think its something to do with the blood vessels being swollen, therefore is a risk of extra bleeding!

Ive known many a cat be done in heat and they have been fine!  ;)

Thanks everyone. I'll go ahead then as I do want them both done at same time.

Remember to ask for intradermal sutures and glue.

Thanks Teresa. I've put in my diary  :)

I might need to get my kitty spayed when in season. Shes so quickly in and out of it!! I was doing some work experience at a vets and took my parents cat in to get spayed and it turns out she was in season. She showed no signs of it. It was interesting to see the difference of that spay (the first i ever saw) and the other spays i saw with cats that wernt in season.
