We are about to replace the carpet in the lounge/dining room and wondering if laminate, with a large rug, might be more practical with the cats. Any experience/opinions welcome, thanks.

We are in the process of taking up all carpet and laminating the house as find it more hygienic with animals. We just make sure we have enough rugs and cat beds dotted around for soft places for the cats to curl up on.

We have a laminate floor in our hall with a rug. Archie and Parki are fine with it, in fact Archie thinks it is great fun to run on it :evillaugh:

We've got laminate flooring in the dining room and in the cats room (plus a few rooms they don't go in) and they love it as it's nice and cool and their ping pong balls bounce v well on it and I love it as it's v easy to keep it clean just give it a quick hoover and a mop ;D

We have engineered wood in the basement which is like laminate. It is the best thing ever. We started with carpet and it was ruined in 2 years but the wood looks brand new after over 2 years. When a glass of wine goes over or a cat throws up, we always say what a mess it would have been with carpet :evillaugh: - it's great ;D

I'm so glad this subject was brought up. My home neds a bit of updating and for some some reason i thought i would be depriving the cats by putting down laminate flooring. Thought it would be more like dancing on ice than F1 ;D so glad to hear the cats don't seem to have a problem with it.

We have it in the hall by the front door. Cats really love sliding on it and as Lottie already mentioned ping pong ball games on it are great fun. The only annoying thing - the rug is always scrunched up somewhere else, it's never where it's supposed to be :shify:

I must add,,, very funny when they come slipping in from the rain or when they are spooked :evillaugh: Kinda like bottom end going faster than the head end :rofl:
Yes it saves your floor with spills and things but its a nightmear for cat hairs, they just seem to swirl round and not go anywhere :evillaugh:

I think a bit of both in the house is good! Cats get more grip on carpets so can run around easily, but of course laminate (or tiling for that matter) are loads easier to clean, as you say. Plus you don't get the dreaded carpet holes by the doors :shify: If I had the opportunity, I would ensure that any carpeted room was one in which there were no doors the cats would ever be shut behind to avoid that problem. In my last place I didn't want them in the spare room, so I had to put down carpet protector by the door as of course, they were quite insistent about trying to get in there! In this place, I've had to abandon that rule as the landing carpet is a beautiful, pristine deep pile affair. If I had my own way, I think I'd make all hallways, landings etc, plus the kitchen, laminate/tiled flooring. (unfortunately, i live in a rented house so can't go pulling up the carpets!)
As an aside, I think I've almost managed to train Shanti to be sick in the kitchen! Regularly putting her in the kitchen when she's having a bit of a heave seems to be gradually sinking in, and each time she seems to make it closer to the kitchen, bless her!

I replaced all my downstairs carpets with laminate when Suki my little rainbow girl developed her flea allergy. She improved greatly (along with the flea treatments to keep it under control).

I love my flooring....when I think of how many carpets would of been replaced by now after all the spills etc! :shocked:
Plus you can give them a good pull around on the rug and they love it! :evillaugh:

Laminate floors are great fun. One of my cats use to get up a good speed on the carpet in the lounge then slide right across the bedroom (at speeda0 straight into the wall, come back into the lounge and do it all again! :rofl:

I bought this rug for the cats....it was only £6 and fits in the washer lol! ;)

I need one of those! - where did you get the rug? - We have a couple of turtle mats that are washable but not very big.
We have 3 quite expensive rugs in the garden that Willow has trashed. The last rug in the house had been in the dining room for ages but didn't really go. I dragged in downstairs to the living room on Saturday so the cats have something to lie on and Willow peed on it :tired: - With the other rugs, I used simple etc and we even have a proper Karcher carpet cleaner but she always managed to find a trace of smell and repeat offend :(

We've got parquet flooring in the hall downstairs, and Max is always very good, if ever he sicks up a furball, he will always do it on that or the kitchen lino, never on the carpet :)
Its always funny watching him belt out the kitchen to go upstairs, his back end always slides away as he takes the tight turn up the stairs :evillaugh:

We have it almost everywhere, the boys love it in the summer as they cool down on it. In the winter they won't sit on it though as they get cold :innocent:
It is funny when they try to run sometimes as they can't get going :evillaugh:

I have laminate flooring on my hall and my cats love it. The best bit is when they have slid down the hall and they try to take the sharp turn for the stairs and they end up running on the spot. :rofl: :rofl: I love listening to them and watching them. ;D

My boys prefer playing on the carpet as they get more grip. Digby loves to run and slide across the living room. Poor Poppy hates the wood floor as she is long haired and has so much hair between her pads she just runs and runs and doesn't get anywhere. It's quite funny to watch but she's usually trying to get away from the boys so it isn't really funny.
It is loads easier to clean up any accidents.

The rug maybe should of been a mat as its not that big either but its cat size! I got it from B&M last year! Used to be Glyn Webb! ;)
The cats love it though.....The rug is the brown thing not the almost white lol! :evillaugh:

Thanks everyone for all your advice - we had it laid yesterday and looks great. The cats were wary last night plus very stressed during the day whilst shut in the bedroom and lots of noise but starting to appreciate it this evening with toys and balls flying everywhere and it will definitely be more hygienic. No furballs or sick on it as yet but they are probably waiting for the rug to arrive !

OF course they are - puke on nice hard wipeable surfaces when there are some lovely soft (and hard to clean) furnishings to come???? I think not! :evillaugh:

Nova likes hairballing on the carpet at the foot of the stairs, yesterday I saw him retching and scooted him into the laminate kitchen - he managed to dart through my legs under the table and puked there :rofl: I think he was telling me I should have left him in peace

old and arthritic dogs have problems keeping their feet on laminate and wood flooring though, especially heavier dogs
the only other drawback is when you are lying all comfy in bed and then you hear a cat being sick - you can't leave it to soak in like you could with carpet, as it might damage the floor - so have to get up and play the game of hunt the vomit :sick:
