Title: Introducing Kitten To Outdoors - Any Tips
Post by: moongirl on April 02, 2009, 17:23:04 PM
Hi,

We are shortly going to be introducing our 6 month old kitten to the option of the world outdoors and wondered if there are any tips to give her reaasurance and confidence should she decide to take the plunge.

I would have though that a very gentle introduction such as briefly opening the patio door while we are in the room then closing it and so on etc would be a starting point but I would appreciate any tips and feedback re experiences etc.

Are you waiting until after your little girl has been spayed?

I tend to let them do things at their own pace. When any of my lot first go out, I watch them through the window as much as I can, but don't go out. I like them to get used to the freedom without me bothering them! If possible, wait until it's slightly warmer when you can leave the door open. That always seems to make cats a little more at ease, I'm not sure why!

It's a little nerve wracking, the first outing!

And chipped  ;D

When i let out for the first time i open the door and let them go at their pace, simon was straight out having grown up outdoors but the other 3 took the best part of 2 weeks to venture past the doorstep!
I let out for first visits on an empty tummy and i also have food related recall with my cats, a shake of biscuits of whiskas temptations and they return  ;D

Choose a day you can stay home so if they adventure off you dont have to dash out.
Although 6 months is a common age to give freedom i still feel they need supervised outings, they are still small and innocent enough to get into trouble/picked up by a well meaning rescuer. Abit like letting a toddler out, big enough to walk and play but a lack of common sense  :innocent:
Its also wise to keep in at night

Jack,

Yes, waiting until she has been spayed, microchipped and had her 2nd vaccinations. Its a few weeks away but I thought I would get some feedback before proceeding.
