Milly has been off her food, she started at the weekend being extra fussy which is nothing that weird as she has times like that! Tues/weds she was only licking at her food :(
I checked her mouth as theres been problems in there before but although not great iv seen worse, so i took her for a check up this morning. My vet agreed her mouth shouldnt be causing that much of a problem so had her in for bloods.
Iv had a call and her liver is the cause of the problems, her ALT is over 500 :shocked: he has scanned her and the good news is that he cant find any suspicious areas so im really hoping its not cancer. Shes dehydrated so has got to stay in and have ft and she has started abs as he thinks its a bile duct infection :(
Its so strange without her here, for a small cat she makes her presence felt :Luv2:

Poor Milly and poor Milly's Mum :hug: Really hope it's 'just' an infection, if the scan hasn't revealed anything untoward then that's the most likely cause right?
Give her a gentle :care: from me when she comes home, did the vet say when that might be? :hug:

Hes says that kind of infection is more common in cats her age (approx 9.5 yrs), im glad he had scanned her before phoning me because i would have been feeling awful waiting and expecting the worst.
If she wasnt dehydrated she would probably be home but i decided to admit her as i dont want her crashing over the weekend, my vets now isnt bad but they dont have seperate wards, shes in a cat ward with my vets so nice and quiet. Hopefully her treatment will work quicker if its going straight in her, as it stands at the moment shes in for 24hrs :(

Il try to remember to ask why re age Gillian. If nothing else shows up its seems that she has cholangiohepatitis which i read can be treated but they can suffer relapses from time to time. I hope she can get away without a prescription diet, she is a funny eater in regards to having the same flavour/brand 2 meals in a row!

MM, Swampy had cholangiohep in 2006 and made a pretty good recovery within a year although his liver is still susceptible and we have to watch it with all the meds. Other than Zentonil, he took a 1/4 pill p.d of a human drug called Destolit for about 9 months and I am convinced it helped a lot. HTH but hope that Milly just has an infection and will be fine very quickly.

Fingers crossed she makes a full recovery - that ALT is really high, higher than any of the boys here!! Snowy had cholangiohepatitis, but we couldnt get meds into her - hers was diagnosed purely through bloods, but there was some positive stuff on FAB about recovery, she was just awkward and wouldnt take the meds - she was also a lot older than Milly though, and had had raised liver enzymes for 10 months at least.

Milly is home but not the same Milly :(
Shes only nibbling at food despite having appetite stimulants and is sleeping alot. Its 48hrs since starting her antibiotics so im hoping they kick in and make her feel better soon. Im used to her exerting authority and i have no one to take me to the loo :(
She has bald bits all over :Luv2:

MM sorry I have only just caught up with this thread, having to stay off comp as much as poss at moment. I am so so sorry to hear about poor little Milly. She ate quite well this morning so i didnt give the periactin (vn said if she eats without it dont give it) throughout the day she has nibbled at what my mum has offered her so wasnt doing too badly. I got back from work and gave her ab and noticed the roof of her mouth, she is now becomming jaundiced :(
Vets now says give periactin and straight to vets in the morning so i have gone with their advice over the vn's :-:
Theres chicken in the oven which i hope will tempt her, if not il syringe feed tonight

She wasnt pleased to go back :evillaugh: shes now got preds and marbocyl and back again on thurs for another check up. She hasnt lost weight since iv had her home so the vet is quite pleased, im to top her up twice daily, using RC Recovery at the moment, smells like chicken soup when you put warm water in it :sick:

She seems brighter today, still not eating much but her face doesnt look so heavy :)
I have a sample of RC early care range, kidney and osteo which she quite likes :innocent: {link removed to supplier as they have let down rescue cats and Purrs will not support them} it seems to be very tasty by the reactions to it which is unusual for a senior food

I got some free samples of that from my vets last year, they liked it, but no meat content, so I wouldn't buy it. Glad she is eating.

Mine wouldn't touch the wet version unfortunately. Yes it made me laugh -it's well hidden here on the vet uk website (I had to email them to ask where it was on their site) but anyhow ze millions of french oldies can't be too wrong (they like their food in France!) ;) Hope she keeps eating well.

Is it chunks or pate?..... She probably wont eat it, very difficult getting anything wet into her, whiskas tuna individual pouches are so far comming up trumps even tho she didnt like them before she got ill :innocent:
Its check up day tomoro :scared: not sure what will be happening as the extra meds havnt made any change to her.

for what it's worth, I was told to avoid tuna when Swampy's ALT was sky high as it's too greasy. I was told bland (he ate L/d bless him for a whole year). Would she eat k/d as that's the next best for livers? the RC SO28 wet version is a sort of glue type pate btw. The dry food is the one that sells tons.

Theres marginal tuna in whiskas, she hasnt thrown any up yet so it must be agreeing with her ;D
At the moment we havnt addressed the best type of diet, just need to get any kind of food into her tummy, she has lost more weight so we have over the weekend for the steroids to boost her appetite or it will be time to consider a feeding tube :scared: :(

have you tried the Zentonil? Vet UK has it loads cheaper than the vets. It def helped with appetite here.

No not yet, i dont mind the cost as petplan are paying lol its a supplement like cystaid/zylkene? Il see if my vets stock it and then collect, will be quicker than online.
Shes been rolling in the sun today, indoors of course as she doesnt do al fresco activity :Luv2:

My vet was £10 more for Zentonil than Vet UK :Crazy: It's a supplement of SAMe. There's tons on SAMe in liver disease online, mostly american. Hope it helps!

Thanks for all the vibes from Milly, shes hoping they will bend the cage door as she has her escape route all planned :Luv:
Shes still in hospital with a tube in her nosey, looks like a big worm :( she has to stay in with it as its quite easy to sneeze out which is no good at home, i dont fancy poking it back down :sick:
Iv been in each day to visit her, i got a big wee as a greeting this evening which made the VN happy as she could finally put a tick on her sheet :wow:
I noticed today she has been put on Destolit, my vet is off on wednesdays tut tut so havnt got much info but i assume the new drug means they have found her gallbladder to be a problem? Or does it have other uses, its not on NOAH as its a human drug.
She still isnt eating apart from a little handfed jelly,but i should have her home over the weekend. :Luv2:

Dont' know about Destolit I'm afraid - at least with the feeding tube she'll be getting the nourishment she needs and that in itself may kick start her appetite :hug:

Id been sort of avoiding this thread as my Dad died of liver cancer :scared: but ......
Its (Destolit) used in humans to disolve gallstones .
I found this too, so it is an animal medication :)

Thats what they are hoping, they are putting fluids down too. I guess until the meds actually stop her liver from doing whatever it is that it shouldnt be she will feel sick eating, i hope they work soon as its horrible not having her here bossing me about!

Milly has had 2 scans and neither found anything so im hopefull she is malfunctioning for another reason.
Theres a handy website called NOAH (www.noahcompendium.co.uk (http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk)) who list all the data sheets but only for drugs licensed for animal use, so the likes of Destolit wont be listed as its not licensed for them. I used to have easy access to a BNF but not sure thats online for non nhs people :doh:

It did wonders for Swampy's liver. He had ALT of 1500 and it came back to normal in a year. He took it for 6 months, every day, no side effects, so very good luck with it.
I hope she is feeling a lot stronger and less sick and will be home safely for lots of cuddles asap :hug:

Milly moo bags has been living up to her reputation and removed her tube and trashed her cage overnight :Luv2:
She has had bloods run today and her ALT is now at 900 :(
We have decided to go ahead with a biopsy and PEG tube into her tummy so once over her op she can come home and be fed here.
It happens tomorrow morning, i just hope shes strong enough to get through it :scared:

Iv got a 7-10day wait for lab results :tired: One lobe of her liver is thickened which could be a tumour :(
Shes in a comfy crate as shes very tired, i think its her painrelief and a bit of catch up time.
Fortunately they changed her bandage to a smaller one, when i visited her yesterday it was like a full body wrap, just legs tail and head sticking out!
Iv done a couple of feeds down her tube and its not as daunting now, i was worried she wouldnt be happy with it being done but she just purrs :Luv:
Im back for a check up monday morning but i think its just a case of waiting for the biopsy results :scared:
To anyone reading who doesnt have insurance please sort yourself some cover, Milly has cost a few pounds short of 1k in 2 weeks and if we can act on her results i can see many more hundreds on top of that :scared:
I also strongly reccomend a credit card saved for such events!

I am glad she is hope and accepting the tube feeding, and fingers crossed for the biopsy to show something treatable.

Shes been out her cage for an hour tonight, used the windowsill, the sofa and then went upstairs under a bed, shes not supposed to exert herself so iv put her back in the crate. For a cat that made out she was wobbly and tired she moved pretty quick :evillaugh: fell for that hook line and sinker didnt i lol
Her tube feeds are going well, hopefully she can put back some weight, i dont like feeling bones :(

I remember when PEbbles had her leg amputated, I sat in front of the cage with her the night after with the door open - you should have seen her move, you would never have thought she had had such a major op!! I hope she starts to improve now, i know what you mean about feeling bones

She passed her wound checks with flying colours and has put on nearly 200g :wow: il have to keep an eye on her bandage if she gets any fatter as it will end up too tight :Luv2:
I think the trip out has worn her out as doesnt want to come out of her cage. The drugs should also be wearing off tonight, we have decided to leave off and see if shes still comfortable without, she gets most of their side effects and obviously its her liver thats processing everything :(
Will hopefully get her results back by friday :scared: :scared:

My vet suggests chemo but i have no experience of this, theres alot of conflicting info out there. He says they tolerate it well, much better than humans and this is what AHT type sites say.
All i know is i cant keep her alive like this or i have to step into unknown territory :(

However to step back a bit and I can do it here but couldnt with Franta when he was ill, I dont know if this will help at all.
How old is Milly and your vet sounds very proactive but what percentage success rate does he estimate for Milly if she has chemo?
What is involved with chemo and how long does it continue?
What is her current quality of life like versus what it will be like on chemo and after?
If the chemo works what does he estimate her life span to be and is the cancer likely to come back?
You may have asked all these questions and more but its so hard to be cool and calm when your best friend is so ill :hug: :hug:

Thank you Gill, AHT is animal health trust, i try to only believe official sites not the opinions of whoever creates the webpage if you see what i mean, FAB also go with similar views as AHT.
Milly is approx 9.5yrs, the treatment starts off with an IV treatment once a week for the first few weeks alongside oral treatments and tailors off from there. According to aht etc it can be lifelong treatment or months, it varies so much.
Her current quality of life isnt acceptable to me so without treatment i cant continue, she sleeps alot and gets her nutrition only through her PEG tube. :(

I was looking at an American site yesterday and it said it is important with Lymphomas that your vet is a specialist oncologist. We have one in Whitstable but I know not all vets are specialists.

i am sorry to hear the news ins't more positive, I am not a fan of chemo, but I have known people use it with success. I think it is important to find out what her lifespan is with and without it, as that will help decide if it is the right route to take, if it will buy her years, than it has to be worth a go? Fingers crossed for you.

My vet is taking advice from an Oncologist......well 2 actually, who have both said something different :scared:
I am trying to remember exactly what my vet said about the Chemo drugs
There is one beginning with "P" but it can often cause problems with the Liver, Can lead to chest infections and actually do more harm than good.
Then there was another one that I'm sure he said would be put in through a caffitar (sp) (but i would have thought he meant IV), it is so toxic that if any spills on the skin it will burn and the skin will never heel. She would also become very toxic and her "wee" would be toxic too.
Sorry i am so useless, It was alot of info to take in yesterday but What i will do is email him and ask him to run through what he said yesterday

Oh, MM. I couldn't cope with knowing the only nutrients my cat was getting were through a tube either. I hope something more positive occurs with regards to Millys care soon. :hug:
