Cat and Dog fur ban comes into force
The fur of cat and dogs will no longer be imported, exported or sold anywhere in the European Union, when an EU-wide ban comes into force on 31 December 2008.
The UK Government had actively pushed for the ban The UK banned commercial fur farming in 2001.
Trade Minister Gareth Thomas said:
"This ban will give UK consumers confidence that whether shopping here or within the EU, they will not be sold products containing cat or dog fur.
"This is an abhorrent trade which has no place in our markets."
Minister for Farming and the Environment Jane Kennedy said:
"I am pleased that the EU ban will mean that British consumers will no longer face the possibility of unknowingly buying fur from cats or dogs ."
There is little evidence of cat and dog fur being imported into the UK. However such fur has been found in other EU countries in products ranging from children's soft toys, to fur trims on boots and coats. The UK Government believes a harmonised EU-wide approach is the most effective tool to stamp out this dreadful trade.

About time to.

Let hope the demand for this vile trade ends. We need the same to happen for seals and other animals too.

it's a start.

then they haven't been looking in the right places. i know of shops in my local area that sell little cats in baskets. they have a sticker stating that they are made in china and i strongly believe that they are made from cat fur. :censored:

Definitiely :)

I mustn't read thread titles when i'm half asleep, glanced at this last night and my first thought, was that my poor animals will get cold if they're not allowed any fur. :shy: :shify:
Tis about time though, not they just need to ban all the other types. :(

I've seen those things too, they're either cat or rabbit fur, too soft to be anything else. :'(

I wonder if there is any way they can be tested and banned if that is the case? - Maybe Animals Asia will know what to do.
Anyway, some positive news on the EU ban of Seal products - the Canadian government are disappointed - well :bum: to the Canadian government >:(

I've got one of those little fluffy cats myself, I remember asking the shop assistant what the fur was...her reply was 'rabbit' though I still am not 100% sure (though would say it is too soft for cat-texture is wrong) but it is one of those things that makes me uneasy to have, but to discard it would be disrespectful, so it sits on one of my altars as a totem for all those cruelly treated animals so that I can offer them blessings on the rainbow bridge and let them know that some humans think of thier plight...... :(
About time this legislation was passed....now to get the practice stopped...PERIOD!

Someone bought me one of those for Christmas a few years back, I was quite speechless, they obviously bought it because of my love of cats, but I was just  :( when I saw it. I couldn't throw it away either and have kept it for much the same reasons as you Koscha.

i would go absolutely mental if somebody bought me something like that :censored: they would be left in no doubt as to my feelings about it.
years ago my ex mother in law came back from spain with highly inappropriate gifts for me. a bull withn plastic swords sticking out of it and a fan with bullfighting scenes on it. i was absolutely disgusted and told her so. until then i'd been a quiet, polite and dutiful daughter in law. mind you she was the sort of woman who always served me and my son meat even though we were veggies, she'd say, "oh it's only a bit of chicken".

I was going absolutely mental inside, but the person who gave me it really had *no* idea. I'm sure if I had said something she would have been absolutely devastated at upsetting me, and would have felt dreadful.
