Poor old Ebony, she's been with me since friday and we have not yet managed to find her owner.
She's on metacam but doesn't seem much better yet - though 3 days is not very long. My vet does acupuncture and I may give him a ring tomorrow to see if he thinks it may be worth giving it a go (and see how much it costs)

awww, poor little soul I do hope she can be helped :( what has happened and will she be rehomed?
-
HI all,
Ebony was found in a garden in Coventry with her back legs paralysed. The lady phoned up the RSPCA who authorised the £50 and she took it to the local pet vaccination clinic who diagnosed it as an old spinal/nerve injury and the cat as an old lady. Metacam was given for pain relief and the cat went back with the lady who found it.
The next day the lady phoned us up in a bit of a state as she still had the cat. She has 2 dogs and young children and was finding it very stressful to keep the animals apart and didn't know what to do with a paralysed cat. I told her to get it in to one of the vets we use for another check up and I'd collect it from there.
The vet said the same thing an old injury and to monitor her to see what her general health is like while we try to find an owner.
She's peeing and pooing OK, trying to use her tray, which is a plastic tea tray in her pen, though not with too much success. At one stage she did seem to be using one of her back legs OK, but dragging the other. Her toes are curled under.
Anyway, Judith and I took her to see Mr Webb today who has been offering acupuncture since it cured his 4 year sciatica problem and she has had her first session this afternoon.
As you can see , not looking to impressed by the process
Mr Webb says the same , that it is an old injury and the cat must have been like this for a few months - which beggars the question to how she managed to get into someones backgarden that has high fences to keep the dogs in.
Ebony had a series of 13 needles along her back and legs , they were left in for about 10 minutes or so and jiggled every so often.
At least the she had a good pee and poo on the table :-[. She wasn't really at all bothered with the needles (It was me with my eyes closed as usual) and lulled us into a false sense of security until she hissed at the last needles to go into one of her back legs.
Anyway, another appt. in 2 weeks and we'll see if there is any improvement. While we were there a lady that has a doggy pool/hydrotherapy place told us to give her a try but I don't know how I feel about trying that.

I think hydrotherapy would terrorize poor Ebony!
This is a really hard one and I would also question how she has been looking after herself cos if she cant use a tray she should have been absolutely filthy when found.
makes me wonder whether this paralysis has come on quite suddenly, old injury or not.
Poor little Ebony , thank you for trying so hard for her
-
how awful to contemplate that this poor puss may have been dumped outdoors in such a state
it breaks my heart that animals that perhaps were once much loved, and enjoyed the comfort of a nice home for many years, find themselves spending the last months of their lives in such sad circumstances
I cannot find words enough to praise you wonderful people who take them in and do your best for them
-
Sending tons of good vibes this ladies way

I wonder the same, especially if found clean in a well fenced garden, possibly shes owned by the 'finder'
Fingers crossed her acupuncture works :wish:

What an interesting story - fingers crossed for her.

Wow, I've never heard of carrying out accupuncture on cats before, I hope it can help Ebony :Luv2:

Just wondered if there was any improvement in Ebony??

I have seen it do miracles on horses and dogs

Poor baby, hope the acupuncture works for her :care:

just to say thers no news yet. She did seem a bit better 2 days aftr but she soesn't move a great deal anyway. I have been trawling net for wheelchairs (someone on freecycle has offered me a spare shopping trolley as he saw one maded from one on telly so mat give that a go)
theres also onfo with dealing with cats with paralysis but as she does walk a few steps perhaps she can get a bit better.
theres a video about living with a paralysed cat and they do not recommend wheelchairs.

still early days
-
is it nerve damage, angie? that can take months to heal, but if she can totter a few steps there may yet be a happy ending for her

I agree with Gill. Has she had xrays ... I was wondering if she has slipped a disc or similar jumping over / down from the fence. This would explain how she was in the garden and is now unable to use her back legs.
-
OH the poor Darling :'( :'( thank heave she was found and bought to safety - everything is crossed for some improvement xxxxxxxxx
-
An update on Ebony. She went along for her third acupunture session on tuesday.
Not sure how much good it is doing though I do think that she has more movement in her back legs when I tickle or groom her. She still chooses not to use them and we spend some time each day holding her in place.
We have more or less given up on the wheels thing as she panic when we try her in any of the contraptions we've put together (not that I blame her). Mr webb suggested cutting holes in an old towel and placing her in then like a sling - that works well but we don't gain too much as you have to keep a clse eye on what her back legs are doing.
Still the fourth session is next tuesday and we'll see where we go from there.
-
Thanks for the update i was wondering how she was getting on,do you think she refuses to use them because previously she was in pain from them
-
She may have just lost the muscle strength in them and that will never come back unless she uses her legs.
I am sure I have read on a post hear not so long ago about physiotherapy for cats and it maybe you need to help her to move her leags around to get some of the muscles working again.............dont know where you get advice about this except from your vet
-
Lots of luck for little Ebony xx
-
good luck with ebony :Luv2:
-
Sending tons of vibes
-
Today poor Ebony has cystitis - I was worried about how strong he urine was and mentioned it tuesday. Vet expressed her bladder then so don't know if thats made it worse or just a co-incidence. Appointment at 12-00. Hope that is all it is :(
good news is that someone phoned this morning and seen the article about her (not sure if in todays paper or on blog) and they have a pet wheelchair which they are bringing around today - aparantly they have offered it to all the local rescues and it has been refused
means I can throw my silly attempts out - less clutter :evillaugh:
-
Good luck at the vets and great news about the pet wheelchair

 for Ebony :Luv:
How old is Ebony and will you be rehoming her?
-
Hi Ebony is probably 8+ going on 14.
Just got back from seeing my mum (her b'day) to find that the rugs in the living room are in the wash. oh blames her for all the vomit and poo that appeared on them today (not angry blame that is)
could have been anyone.....
Anyway, things are washed and drying, puppy pads now turned the right way round with the clean vet bed on top (bless he did his best!).
She seems fine in herself though no improvement in the back legs really. As for rehoming - I don't think there is much call for a paralysed cat out there so if the decision is to keep her going I expect she will have to stay here.
Not had a paralysed cat before so not really sure where I stand in the quality of life debate.....
-
How is Ebony in herself, is she taking an interest in anything or just sleeping,im really interested in her and how she is going on
-
she was on my lap for a fuss yesterday for a good half hour before wanting off (and I was left with a little damp patch :Luv2:)
She was also dragging herself round the house and complaining in the utility room this morning 'cos I was up a 6am (felt thirsty and itchy and I now have 14 annoyed fronlined cats, 10 milbemaxed (ran out)) and still had not gone to get her any food by 8am.
She is her normal self. As we have no idea how long she has been like this it may be all she's known for years.
-
Thanks for that, is the acupuncture having any effect at all.do you think, can the vet not determine roughly how long she has been like this, whether its something recent or maybe an old injury that wasnt treated, im sorry to ask so many questions but she sounds like a little fighter and im following her progress with much interest,i would also like to know what the prognosis is if possible for her future in as far as they can say.
-
Angie :Luv: bet you loved that half hour of fuss she wanted and enjoyed :Luv: :Luv: :Luv: :Luv: give her a cuddle from me.
-
Bless that brave little girl, give her a :care: from me please.
Does she walk ok at all Angie?
-
Awww poor little girl, sending big Hugz & Purrrs from The-Kats-Wiskers. :Luv2:
-
no still no walking on her legs though she can push them when your
annoying fussing her, and I'm sure they are stronger.
She likes her fusses, will drag herself all around the downstairs and tell you when shes hungry.
The next appointment is a week today and I don't know where we go from here :(
Its going to be a hard call to make a judgement on her quality of life.
-
it must be very difficult knowing what to do when the cat is ok on herself but just can't get around, such a shame, she must need constant care? :(
-
she doesn't really need constant care. She sleeps on a vetbed with a puppy pad under it (and then the catbed!). The vetbed is changed daily (and the pad) and the other bedding as necessary.
She has a puppy pad beside her which she sometimes manages to poo or or there will be a bit on the floor somewhere.
The only thing is the weeing, in that as she drags herself around she leaves a trail of urine, but as the downstairs is all laminate and tiles, I just mop over every so often. and of course, when i have her on my lap i have a pad under her.
It may be that normal incontinence pads might help with that as I have noticed an increase in peeing on the pads which of course is what they are designed for but I have no idea where to get the ordinary ones from (yeah, look it up on the net why don't I but I couldn't find anything in the several chemist shops I tried the other day).
So really all she needs is someone prepared to put up with that and give her fuss - and I'm still hoping for that miracle cure - I mean you see with humans that nerve damage can take a long time to recover.
-
Ebony sounds amazing
-
Was wondering how Ebony got on at the vets this week, is there any improvement yet and did the vet give any indication of her prospects for the future
-
How is Ebony doing Angie?
-
How is Ebony doing now? is there any improvement in her condition
-
I keep wondering too :-: hope she is ok
-
no change I'm afraid and I think I am going to be put under pressure soon regarding quality of life from the vet :'(
She has had cyctitis again, so had a covenia (sp) jab this time and is due for acupunture on tuesday. She's been a bit down but I've not had the time to give her much attention with the kittens and missing cat this week.
In the good weather we have had the patio doors open and as soon as she hears them open she drags herself out onto the patio. I then have to keep an eye on her - I don't think she can go any further but don't really want to risk it.

Dont let the vets pressurize you
-
awwww, I do keep thinking about her :(
-
Don't feel pressurised Angie... make any decision in your own time as you are the care giver.
It must be such a difficult position to be in and I really do feel for you and little Ebony. whatever the outcome you have done your best by the little one.
-
The vet has 'signed her off'. He says he muscles are atrophying and the acupuncture is no longer doing any good.
It was quite funny really 'cos he was digging in the needle to see if there was any response and he got none - even when he went up to her shoulders
I think she was having a mardy as I had washed her an hour before so she was clean (as opposed to me with all the dirty water splashed over my clothes and not enough time to change )
He says a very minute % of animals can recover some function after 6 months but it is less than 1% and its that good old quality of life thing. I said that I was not ready to make that call and he was fine with that as she is obviously not in pain (or not showing it at any rate!)
So thats it until I come to the acceptance of the final decision. He thinks it will be harder to keep her going through the summer months and cystitis will keep happening .......
-
lots of love to ebony
-
awww Angie  poor girl it's such a shame, I was hoping she would improve :(
-
I am sorry to hear this, and I Do hope her cystitis bouts dont become too frequent, could you get Cystaid into her, that will help her bladder lining?
-

-
Oh dear... poor old girl. :(
-
I think Ebony has now started to fit - this would indicate the possiblilty of a tumour. Made an appointment for her this morning to say goodbye, got myself all syched up , took her in then bottled it and she is now back with me.
Will keep a close eye on her to see what happens over the next few days.
At the moment she is more or less herself, metacam hopefully will continue to keep her painfree. Her eyes are responding ok and her chest is fine.
I want to confirm to myself that she is fitting as all I have seen in the stiffness and dribbling (followed by a few minutes of panting), so it might be that she was just being sick and was choking. (OK I may be not kidding myself)
She is still eating well and enjoying her fuss - of which she had all of yesterday evening and this morning much to the chargrin of my own cats who were sitting on the sidelines staring at her.
-
 my heart goes in my mouth when I see a new post on here, poor girl, let us know how she gets on.
-
Oh Angie i do hope this is just a blip, she has fought so hard (and so have you ) to have a normal a life as possible given her condition,im praying for her and sending loads of positive healing vibes for this little darling who has touched my heart so much :Luv:
-
I do hope she is OK

Fingers crossed for her

Ebony was pts this morning and is now buried in my garden with the rest of my lost ones.
She had another fit yesterday and hardly touched her food in the evening or this morning. She looked uncomfortable, her eyes were wide and she was a bit twitchy when touched.
It has hit me hard, in many ways harder than one of 'my own' (though I count her as one). I think this is because there are no fond memories to think back on as there should be - its as if her life cannot be celebrated properly. As I go through and clear up downstairs and put things back to where they were a few months ago it feels as though I am totally erasing her from existance.
RIP Rbony, you are now at rest.
I hope you go to join your previous owner if thats how you came to be with us.
and if not, then I hope they get there just rewards for abandoning you.
-
Oh hunnie, I'm so very sorry

Angie, I'm sure Ebony had fond memories of you when she left to go to the Rainbow Bridge. You tried your best and all the things you're clearing up round the house don't mean you're removing her from existence - she will always be a special girl to you even without all that stuff dotted around.

Play hard at the bridge Ebony... you have lots of purrs friends waiting to show you the way.
Thinking of you Angie...
-
Angie, I an sure that this is from all of us. :grouphug:
You showed her love, warmth and compassion and allowed her to go with dignity, which is more than what her so called caring owners could provide.
It does not matter how long they are with us when we foster them, they still have this knack of weedling their way into our hearts. At least there are still people in this world that care.
-
she knew love and affection at the end, and was allowed to go peacefully and with dignity, something she wouldn't have had without you.
That is the truth.
I am sorry, Angie.
