After a phone call this morning about a 12 week old kitten found at the side of the road and taken to our vets we have spent the morning dealing with this little one. There are pictures below which some may find upsetting. >:( :'(
Initial suspicions are that he is around 12 weeks of age however his teeth seem rather more developed so may be older and through malnutrition is much smaller than he should be. The Little one is starving and painfully thin, back legs are red raw and his little bottom is very very swollen and sore. He was covered in poo from a blockage at his back end when he arrived which was mixed in with weeds / grass from the fields at the side of the road he was found sitting at.
Luckily for him a passer by stopped saw he was in a very bad way and took him straight to our vets. Since his arrival he has been bathed (which showed the true extent of his condition) and has eaten a little and is currently resting in a nice warm bed. We also suspect that the end of his tail has been broken and set at a 90 degree angle which would appear to have been there for a while.
Our initial thoughts are that he has been dumped and we will update as we know more. Our hearts are truly broken over this little one and it brings a tear to our eye to see him so painfully thin and in pain at such a young age.

We got a kitten lik that a few yrs ago it was touch and go for a long time but thankfully we were able to build him up and get some weight on him and he then had surgury to remove most of his tail once that was over he came on leaps and bounds I will post some of the before and after pictures if I can find them..

Ahhhh what a pretty little boy .... I'm sure now he is getting lots of love and attention he will come on in leaps and bounds. Well done to the kind person who rescued him and of course you and your vets :hug:

Poor little baby,i agree with BM the human race has a lot to answer for, :censored: how could anyone leave such a little innocent in such a bad way,thank god a passerby had enouch compassion to take him to the vets or god knows what would have happened to him :hug: :hug:

Just a note to say that the little one has eaten a morsel or two and is resting peacefully on a big thick wadd of warm bedding. Hopefully his strength will pick up in the next couple of days and his soreness will ease and we can start to get some weight back on him slowly.
He was one very lucky little kitty in terms of having been found. He was surrounded by fields on either side and it is a very busy road, often taken at speed by locals. Just a little closer and the poor wee babe could have easily been taken out by a lorry or car! :(
He is safe and warm now and that is the important thing.....

He is so lovely, and he looks so trusting. Poor thing, has he got a name yet? I always think an animals new life starts with their name. What about Voodoo? (It means spirit in African and this guy has that all right!)

Whats that name of the Greek god or something that came back from the dead or whatever? Lazarus or something... Sounds like he needs a good inspiring name..Not sure if this is a girl or boy but the last elephant diary had some very good names, Breeze and Babel and Harmigan being several... The last puss cat we had like this we called Isaac.. or Ismale (sorry thats not right)!)) Freeway was another.. Whatever he is a very lovely little puss cat and fingers crossed for a speedy recovery..

Breeze is a nice name for this little star - lovely name Sharon - we had one except he was the most cat loving Border Collie I have ever seen - everything wether feral or domestic loved him and most night she could be found being used as a kitten hot water bottle. :shocked:

Lazarus may be appropriate as clearly he was at the brink of death. But more accurately that is a Biblical reference (though arguably, being a New Testament reference may have been recorded in Greek. There are a number of Greek myths relating to rebirth, but Lazarus is not one of them. There was a mystery faith practiced at Eleusis related to Demeter who was a goddess, so I guess this wee baby's gender may determine the appropriateness of a name. Demeter, being the goddess of the harvest (or grain) was subject to an annual death and rebirth and the worship was, in more ancient times, related to human sacrifice - the year king who was feted for a year then sacrificed for the future of the crops ... (short digression, I realise).
So glad this wee lad is in safe hands now, and clearly in the nick of time...

Completely off on a tangent.....I had a rat called Lazarus, because he was so close to death when he was really small. My friend basically "brought him back" by lodging him under his armpit for warmth and he lived a good few years after that!

Just to let you know the little one is not fairing too well at the moment and we are very worried about him. :'( :'(
His mind is willing and he is quite alert but his wee body is just so weak he is really struggling tonight. I've had to put a call into the vet about him this evening and we have given a/b's and regular small amounts of fluids and recovery food and all we can do really is see how he is in the morning but for the moment it really is touch and go and we may still have got to him too late :(
In all honesty I'm really not sure he will make it through the night but I hope to God that I am wrong and the wee fella is feeling much better then :Luv2:
Sam - we looked up Azrael and got it means the Islamic Arc Angel of Death..... so ... we not going to go with that one sorry! We quite like Colby too.... so may go with that! ;)
Please keep your fingers and paws crossed for this wee mite who my heart breaks for every time I look at his wee face. :'(

it truely sickens me to see such a beautiful animal in such a state, bless the little chi-chi face. Hes is such a cutie.
How can anyone leave a baby to get in such a state, or dump them, or what ever happened to let him get like this. :'(

Colby is still with us this morning :) he is still very very weak but has tried to eat a little himself this morning and has finally managed to pass some urine which he was struggling with last night. He got through the night so lets hope that this has given him a fighting chance to stay alive. :scared: :Luv2:
We both sat up with him very late last night and eventually he passed out with exhaustion after we gave him some Metacam as he was in so much pain bless him. He was runninga fever and we actually think he was taking severe stomach cramps and that on top of his very sore bottom / innards and an inability to pee as well as his very weakened state he was really really struggling. It just broke our hearts to see him in so much pain. :'(
I have to admit that neither of us really expected to check on him early this morning and him still be with us but he is a little fighter and just keeps trooping on. I also have to thank wee Herbie as he watched over the little one constantly yesterday and slept next to his cage last night watching over little Colby which was so sweet to see and wee Colby kept looking for him so I like to think that helped the wee man too. :Luv2:
Colby is far from out of the woods at the moment and all we can do is hope that the little guy continues to fight for the next few days whilst we give him the care he needs and keep our hopes up that he can continue to fight although we're not getting our hopes up too high for now. :scared:

He has eaten a little more this morning and has drunk some fluid voluntarily so that is a good sign that we're not having to syringe feed him thus far today. He is still very sore bless him but has made himself a little groove in his big thick blankets / bed on top of his snugglesafe to keep him warm.
He is trying to move around a little but you can see he is clearly in pain and everything is a real effort because he is so weak. :( But his wee eyes are a tad brighter today too.
It is definately fair to say that I don't think he would still be with us had we got to him any later and I just hope and pray that he has the strength to keep fighting and his little body keeps up the fight too. :wish:
Will give you another update later on today to let you know how he is doing then but please keep your fingers and paws crossed for the little man as he is far from out of the woods for now :'(
Our assumptions for now is that he was dumped in the fields where he was found as there is no way in the state he was in he could have wandered to where he was from town, but then I suppose anything is possible. Certainly whoever was responsible for his care previously (which has definately been someone) I hope they receive their Karma for the pain and suffering this little baby is enduring. :censored:

thanks guys, He has been writhing about again tonight in pain and discomfort and giving out some horrible yowls. :( On yet another look at his little bottom we decided to give little Colby another wee 'bathe' at his rear end as he was very compacted with poo and needed a little 'help' :sick: :innocent:
It seems to have helped him settle some although he is once more exhausted despite trying to make it as stress free as possible. We have settled him down with some Metacam and a snugglesafe and he seems to be resting peacefully for now. :Luv2:

I have just caught up with this: all my thoughts are with this beautiful wee mite this evening.

all we can do is wait and see folks. Lactulose would have been an idea but the problem was that the very 'end' was blocked solid with very dry poo which had become lodged after us clearing the worst away from the outside yesterday. Bit hard to explain really to be totally honest.... you kinda had to be there and see it for yourself! :shocked:
He has since managed to pass another 3 or 4 smaller pieces himself which are a far better consistency so his bowel seems to be starting to work again it just needed a wee helping hand to clear the exit!! :-: bearing in mind he had probably not had any food in his gut for some time and what was stuck had been there for a while and dried out. The worst of which we had removed yesterday afternoon.
Since having passed a couple of pieces he has settled down and slept the most soundly he has since he arrived so all we can do is hope that this has helped him some just now.
His wee botty is still red raw and sore and we will keep an eye on that along with everything else.
We are far from saying he will be OK and to be honest we are trying desperately not to get our hopes up as we know he really needs to get through the next couple of weeks and make good progress before we could even begin to consider he may well make it. Been there before as I'm sure many of you rescue peeps have. :(

Oh bless him no wonder he was crying if he was blocked up ... I'll take your word that you "had to be there and see it for yourself" :sick: It must have been really uncomfortable for him. Hopefully now he is a bit clearer he can continue to eat and pass properly and get some well deserved rest.

Hi folks, well the most important thing is ...... he's still with us! :) :Luv2:
After our 'help' last night he managed to pass some poo and it really seemed to help him settle a little easier. He snuggled himself down with his teddy bear last night and on checking him early this morning he had had lots of wee wee's and had eaten the little bit of food / liquids he had with him. So great news on that front.
We are keeping a close eye on his wee botty for any more blockages, his hydration levels and how his tummy is doing although the poor wee tike tires so easily you sometimes feel bad for having to check him, but needs must!! He was actually trying to clean himself last night :Luv2: bless the wee soul but obviously found it very difficult due to the open sores on his wee legs and botty but just after a wee minute or two he was exhausted and was quickly back asleep again. :Luv2:
His wee eyes are so big and wide when he looks at you and I just hope that things continue to improve for the wee soul and his wee body can recover from the damage and malnutrition. He is such a little sweetheart and it still brings a tear to our eye to see him suffering like this. :(

Just found this thread; what a lovely little face he has (reminds me a bit of my late, beloved Lucia...), and what a terrible state he was in. So glad you are able to help him! I'll be thinking good thoughts for Colby, hopefully now that you've been able to clear out his little bottom a bit he will start picking up a bit. *fingers and toes crossed*

Sounds like our little Colby is doing all the right things ... eating, drinking, weeing, pooing and Sleeping ... sleep is good for him .... while he is resting his little body can slowly recover.

When Lucia became very ill, she became constipated, and the vet had this gooey/slippy stuff in a tube that he said was a mild type of enema. He put some of this stuff up her bum, and within a couple of hours, some of those pellets came out and really eased her, it just lubricates the area. He also gave her a bit of subcutaneous fluids to help rehydrate her system. Maybe something like this could help Colby if he gets a bit bunged up again?

hi guys, we're just back from the vet with the little man. We're all really concerned about what going on 'internally' with the wee man.
His colon and small intestine is jam packed full and very thickened and is causing him a lot of discomfort. We are already getting lots of fluids into the wee man and are combining this with lactulose and katalax now as well as the bathing to try to keep things as moist as possible.
Vet wanted to admit him today but we want to give him another 24 hours with the above to see what happens as he is voluntarily taking on fluids and keeping his hydration levels up. If still no luck tomorrow then the vet wants to consider taking him in for a full enema although it would probably take at least 2 attempts to clear his colon it is so compacted and solid in there. :scared:
We are very conscious of keeping his spirits up as well as trying to get things moving in his bowel department and we just don't feel that him being in at the vet and on his own for such long periods is necessarily the way to go unless we have no other option as we would hate for him to give up due to being on his own. Which by this time tomorrow that may well be the case but we just wanted to try for another day to see if we can get him to start clearing it himself. Also, with him being very weak we also don't want to have to put him through more than he has to by being poked and prodded, etc.
There is no guarantee that if we do the enema that it will make everything alright due to any damage to the bowel which may mean he is unable to use it properly in the future. :'( There are so many what if's buts etc with this little man and I wish we could click our fingers and it would be all over done with for him. It is so damn frustrating! :(

Aw, poor little thing! Not surprising he would have problems with his lower GI and bowel, if he's all compacted in there. I hope with the fluids and meds that things will start moving along better for him and he'll be more comfortable. Sending the best of thoughts to Cody from all of us (including OH who came home from work early and is concerned as well).

You have the room nice and warm of course.
You have a little bowl or whatever the kitten will fit in
nicely, put nice warm not hot water in the bowl.
Then, for 2-5 minutes, you hold the kitten so its abdomen &
bottom are in the nice warm water.
Kitty will scream bloody murder! It's hard to hold the kitty
in there. Piteous mews! I sang to them, they were still upset!
Then of course dry well, warm up, cuddle, listen to them
threatening to call the Cat Abuse Hotline.
We did this on a 2 week old (who fit in a tea mug w/water),
and on a bigger kit in a soup bowl, or other type of container
You need to do this at least twice a day.
We usually saw some loosening up in a day.
I had to do this a few time over the years and I have done it with bigger cats as well, if you have a second person on hand it helps as there will be a bit of a struggle with kitty
I think its worth a shot for colby you have nothing to lose and everything to gain

we've done this with several cats over the years with this problem so its always a first thought in these circumstances and how we managed to clear the dried poo from his back end last night.

Our Forest has a very narrow pelvis and has to be kept "moist" for want of a better word all the time. As well as Katalax and Lactulose I have found the Defurr-um paste and also the Hairball stick (available from PAH) to be very effective and the good thing is he loves the taste of it. If he has had a bad bout of constipation I can guarantee that one of these two will "Clear him out" better than the katalax and lactulose. Maybe worth trying Colby with a little bit if he will take it.

It's like a roll on deodrant in shape and the idea is the cat will lick straight off the stick. I think it is supposed to help them pass hairballs rather than hack up. Forest doesn't suffer from hairballs but this definitely does the trick in helping him pass his poos. He doesn't lick it off the stick, I chop a slice off for him and put it in his food bowl - normally the first thing he eats.

We had a kitten like this. .Little Gremlin... Pinkbear will i am sure be ablet to fill you in.. But she went back to the vets twice to be cleared... She was about 12wks or so old... a feral... but easily handled.. She made it though... As for the vets they did a lot of work on her .. Maybe Julie can give some insight. She eventually got rehomed to one of our welfare officers mums!

poor little mite :( it sounds like you have done right in bringing him home though to give him a little longer before admitting him. The change can all be causing this. One thing which I heard about and I do this with Schui and it helps is gentle slow massage on his tummy in a clockwise circular motion but very gently just for a few seconds or so maybe once or twice a day and it seems to get things gently moving.

he's been in quite a bit of discomfort tonight again and we have managed to move another few cm's of poo but he seems to have a more stubborn blockage a little further back.
In all honesty I think we are going to have to get him in tomorrow for an enema :( and just hope he has the strength to fight through the sedation / anaesthetic. We will see how he is through the night and first thing in the morning but if still the same then we will put a call into the vet and get him fitted in tomorrow.
We won't however be leaving him at the vets and will be bringing him home for supervision and nursing as we don't feel he would cope on his own overnight and without reassurance to keep his spirits up. :scared:
lets keep our fingers crossed for a humungous poo overnight.. and failing that.... a positive outcome for the wee fella tomorrow :scared:

thanks guys. Wee Colby is not too hot this morning to be honest. :'( He is very down and in a lot of pain so we have decided to go ahead with the enema this morning as nothing more has moved.
He will be heading along to the vets shortly so please keep your fingers and paws crossed for the wee fella. :wish: we plan to bring him home as soon as he is ready.
ON an up note he did show signs last night his bowel trying to work bless him.... (can't think of another way to describe it at the mo) although what we got out was full of grass and very gritty.... so heaven only knows what he has been trying to eat to satisfy himself. :scared:

Just caught up on this and wanted to add my prayers and vibes for this brave wee man and also for you Sarah.
I find myself wondering if Colby was dumped because he had a bowel overflow due to internal problems hes certainly been suffering for a long time poor boy. Hopefully he will be strong enough to cope with the enema and it will bring some much needed relief.
Pedro has everything crossed for him too,he knows what poor Colby is going through, Pedro was on massive doses of lactulose and still needed countless enemas; the thing that has helped Pedro the most was adding Pro Fibre to his every meal and actually reducing the lactulose to once per day.
Also dont know if this helps but my vet prescribed Emla cream for a poor girl whose back end was in a similar state.

It is very possible that is why they dumped him because he was a dirty kitten due to gastro probs..or the novelty wore off ... he wasn't growing properly.... we will never know for sure... as most of the time we never do. >:( Despite the malnutrition he is very small for his age (going by his teeth nearer 7 mths ish) and he is only the size of a 12 week old kitten. So he has a lot to contend with bless him. :Luv2:
All we can do now is try to ease out what is lodged in there and help him to fight on as much as he can and provide cuddles and reassurance when he needs us. Even if he doesn't make it through all of this at least he will have known love in his last few weeks :(
Still no news from the vet yet which we are assuming is a good sign... if I've not heard anything by the back of 1pm I'll give them a call to see whats happening.

OK, just off the phone to the vet! there has been a lot of poooo.... :wow:
Colby on the other hand is very depressed and low. :'( They have moved a lot but the vet has concerns that his bowel has stopped working and if that is the case then there is nothing that we can do. :'(
That said after we moved this 'exit' blockage he did move down another 6 or so cm himself so we are taking it that is a postiive sign that the gut is trying to work. :scared:
All we can do is bring him home let him rest, try to keep his spirits up and take things slowly. I for one don't mind putting up with lots of poo for a couple of weeks to give him a chance..... and luckily he is with us so he will get that chance.
We are heading off to collect him in the next half hour and bring him home so please keep everything crossed that after all he has been through he can keep fighting on and his wee body will start to work again. :wish: :wish:

I think part of it is because we hate the thought that our beautiful babies might have had such a turn in life if circumstances had been different, and we feel for these little scraps who so nearly don't make it, or who slip through our fingers without anyone to care about them.

He is very very weak and struggling to stand. They flushed out a lot of poo and have said they think there is still a load more to come too. He is however for the first time hunched up on his tum with his feet tucked up resting something he hasn't been able to do. We can still feel a mass in there so we just have to hope that his wee gut can help process whats left :scared:
He did pass some on his way home while wrapped in his towel so when we got him home we had to clean him up a tad. Wrapped him in a wee towel while paul warmed up his snugglesafe and he just lay there looking up at me and his eyes gently closing as I stroked his wee head :Luv2:
We've put him in his cage with his snugglesafe and gave him chin rubs and petts from you all to which he gave a grateful purr before gently closing his eyes and nodding off to sleep. We will keep a close eye on him over the afternoon and next few days and wait to see if he can find the strength to get his wee body working again. :Luv2:

yes we did :hug: his little botty is healing up well on its own.... and we have him on the lactulose just now and will see how he goes over the next few days as suggested by the vet but have taken on board all the ideas and suggestions from everyone and so gives us things to try should he need a bit of extra 'help'!

Food with Psyllium might help bulk him but if he is blocked, I suppose bulking might do more harm than good. Hopefully as he is clear, his body will start a natural rhythm. I have a lot of stomach problems and the nutritionist is against any kind of purging medicine and in favour of bulking things that encourage the bowel to work by itself.

hi guys,
wee Colby has had a restful afternoon with lots of cuddles and petts and has passed a good bit more poo! :) His mood has been up and down throughout the afternoon.
His wee tummy has gone right down and we can no longer feel his bulging intestine, which for now we are taking as a good sign. We have continued to get fluids into him this afternoon / evening and on sitting down to have our dinner about an hour ago we had to throw our dutifull chip to Herbie (don't ask cos we don't know) and at that moment the little man leapt to his feet to chase the chip and let out a yelp!!! as much as to say its mine... where's mine! :Crazy: bless him :Luv2:
To say we were stunned was an understatement. So, in anticipation we tried him with some more RC Recovery food and he has eaten a little on his own terms :) for the first time today.
We don't want to employ too many additional methods to his food at the moment for bulking / flushing as we want to give him a chance to heal and encourage his wee body to start to function for itself. We will give him a day or two and see how things are going and obviously we will adjust things accordingly. We do appreciate all the suggestions and are bearing them in mind as we go on and discussing Colby's case with the vet.
Additionally we don't want to bulk him up too fast as he is not only just thin but at the point of no return thin where he is drawn.... so it is important to take things slowly so as not to put any additional, unncessary strain on his wee body and organs especially in light of the enormous strain they have already been under. :scared:
One thing is clear that it is going to be a long road for Colby and he still has a ways yet to go before we can even contemplate considering him out of the woods. We are just going to take each day as it comes and hope and pray that he makes it and take things easy so as not to push on too much too fast.

Like you say he's a long from "out of the woods" but every step is in the right direction so hopefully he will contiue to follow this route and will maybe be able to go live with Aunty Liz ;)

Went out getting everyone else fed and watered for the night, went into the hall and glanced into the sitting room (where Colby is) Looking through the glass at me are Herbie, Misty and a little black cat..... mmmm but we don't have a little black cat in there..... OMG Its Colby!!!!
The wee rascal has found a gap in the bars of his cage big enough for him to get through cos he's so darn skinny!!!! Got out so he could be with Herbie... when I went in he was just quite happily following nurse Herbie around!!! <sigh> what a wee tike. ;D Paul has had to cable tie the gaps in the cage in a bid to try and stop him getting out again!! :shocked:
YOu know all this has happened in the last few hours and I truly truly hope that it is as promising as it seems and not false hope for him to fall at the next hurdle. he is such a little fighter so please please lets hope that this progress continues albeit perhaps I think it will be with some hilarity.
Janey - Yes you are so right... the difference we have seen in little Colby this afternoon just in bringing him home and giving him love and tending to him and making sure he has clean bedding, etc has been amazing from the very low, depressed little kitten that wouldn't even lift his head at 2pm today!
His little tummy has gone right down now and he has dispelled quite a bit of poo so hoping that most of it is cleared ;D

Forgot to take my laptop home last night so had to wait til this morning to see how little Colby was doing and it's wonderful that the news is soooooooooooooo good. The video is brilliant and those eyes at the end.

hi guys, wee Colby has been poooing for Scotland last night and his wee bed was covered this morning.
He's quite down and depressed this morning, couldn't even get a wee purr :( although you couldn't blame him the wee soul so we'll just try and keep his spirits up today and I'm sure Nurse Herbie will help too! :)
On an up note though he did eat his food / fluid last night but doesn't have much interest in eating this morning so will just keep trying

we cleaned the wee fella up a little this morning as don't want to put him through the stress of a bath just yet today as he is so down but will give him a 'dunk' and a bath later on today hopefully once he has brightened up a bit. :wish:
We have managed to get him to take a 'little' food this morning... and have found that if we mush up a teeny morsel of the webbox treat and give it to him and then add a teeny bit to the food that he will try to eat some to get at the treat bit. Granted he is only eating minute pieces of food and the treat isn't ideal but it is better than nothing if it gets him to take some of his RC food. :scared:
He's still pretty low but I managed to get a faint purr out of him earlier. Will get him out (wrapped in a towel) and give him some more cuddles shortly from you all. Thanks for all the continued words of support guys it really means a lot to us both and to little Colby. :hug: :hug: :hug: :thanks:

We want to give him another few days before adding in cat milk.... as we are unsure of how well his wee body is digesting food and passing it through so we are trying to stick to the RC Recovery food which has a mix of nutrients to help him on his healing process.
Something we want to avoid as we have had it happen with kittens with digestive problems in the past is if they can't digest the milk quickly enough it begins to ferment in their stomach and causes it to bloat out adding to their discomfort. Something that we want to avoid right at the moment especially in light of the inflamation to his digestive tract / bowel. But if he starts to pick up and eat better in the next few days and we can tell his body is digesting foods then we will look to try it in small amounts to help boost his calcium intake.
We are trying to be very very careful and not bomabard his system with too much. Whilst the signs since last night have been positive we know only too well from experience that if we get our hopes up too high and believe that the worst is over it will be all the harder should he take a turn for the worst suddenly. If this progress continues for another 2 - 3weeks then we will begin to relax some and feel Colby has a fighting chance but at the moment we are a ways off that statement. :hug: :hug:

Its a treat stick that you buy in most pet shops and supermarkets I think Sue... we had some handed in by a friend of ours and its a kinda mushy stick treat... in all honesty out of our 9 cats there is only 2 of them that really like it.... but we thought we'd try it with Colby and he did!! :) That said I think its hugely popular with many little kitties! :)

haven't managed to get little Colby to take more than a couple of licks of food from the end of my finger but its better than nothing at all. Had the wee fella out for biiiiig cuddles and he was loving it and fell asleep in my arms for an hour bless him. Bit smelly... but I don't care we love him just the same :Luv2:
He is still very queit and low but am wondering whether the last few days are catching up with him and after his wee burst of energy last night he is just simply exhausted with everything.
Will leave him to rest this afternoon and when Paul gets home from work we'll give him a wee bath and that will hopefully make him feel a little bit better. :shy:

hi guys,
Well I have managed to get colby to eat a bowl and a half of food (Colby portions of around a teaspoon with fluids) this afternoon from 2 til just now. :) So that's good. He does eat the RC Recovery food well once you get him to take an interest in trying to eat... just you have to constantly coax him at the moment which I think is most likely down to exhaustion. So it makes food a slow process as he takes it a finger full at a time :Luv2: We've never had much luck with a/d and getting cats to eat it more than once and the think I like about the RC is that it smells quite nice too... bit like cream of chicken soup I think :shocked:
He's still quite low but I think more than anything this afternoon this has been cos he has been so tired. I have had him out a couple of times for roughly an hour for a big cuddle and he has snuggled right in and gone to sleep and then slept more when I've popped him back in his wee pen. Not had much noise out of him at all just the odd wee look with those big round eyes :Luv2: and some more poo! ;D
Paul has been late back to work tonight but will hopefully be home shortly and we can get the wee fella in for a bath and then settle him back by his snugglesafe and fire to keep him warm. :Luv2: Doesn't take much for him to get cold at the moment but then he has none of natures insulation to keep him warm.
I really hope this wee darling does make it.... he is such a wee fighter and I just know that when he is well again he will be such a BIG character! :Luv2:

Colby has had a restful night with some more poo all over his bedding :) ;) not as much as before but I think thats a good sign, I hope. :Crazy:
He had his full bath last night... which he was so good for and is now smelling and feeling much better in that department. :) He slept for about an hour after his wee bath and then seemed to find some energy from somewhere and was watching nurse herbie playing with a toy. We popped a mousey thing into the bars for him and he sat and played with the floppy tail bit for a little while before settling back down again as he was tired. Perhaps it just takes him all day to muster up some energy by around 8 pm??!?! but it is so great to see him taking an interest in something rather than just lying there staring into space which he does a lot of the time.
He is very quiet again this morning but not as depressed and low as yesterday so that is a good sign and I did manage to muster a faint purr from his this morning :Luv2: On picking him up and wrapping him in his wee towel he was quite content and wasn't too fussed on going back down again so I think it will be big cuddle time again this morning once the others are organised here. :Luv2: He really loves his big cuddles and falls asleep in my arms... although normally when paul isn't around to take a photo as he is just so so cute and peacful it brings a wee tear to my eye.
We are hoping he will have a good day today and will eat for us without the extra prompting as he ate 2 bowls of food between 8pm last night and this morning! ;D ;D

Great news this morning, nice to hear Herbie is teaching what kittens should be doing, ie playing.

Colby's nightly update! :) I apologise for no update this avo... but we have been rushed off our feet here today with appt's phone calls and tending to the wee man so we're kinda :tired: and still gotta get things organised for doing the car boot sale in the morning to raise some very much needed funds at the mo! :Crazy:
The wee fella has eaten 2 bowls of food 1 at lunch and 1 at supper time. (Colby sized of a forkfull of RC with water) finishing off every last drop of food in one go!! Amount of poo on his bedding has begun to decrease as has the 'seepage' which we hope is a good sign and on having a feel around his tummy there is food on its way down his intestine. :wish:
He has been quite content this afternoon and enjoyed his cuddles, kisses and snuggling down with his teddy bear and snugglesafe. :Luv2:
We do have a little concern in that the green discharge from his eyes when he arrived has increased slightly today but we are hoping that its nothing sinister and his ab's will help ward off any infection he has had. :wish:
BY the looks of him just a few moments ago... comatose with teddy... I think he's in for a peaceful night and was purring away when I left him. Will update you all again tomorrow on his progress on our return from the boot sale! :hug:

Morning folks..... :hug: :hug: yip we still here..... got to 5.30 this morning and we were both SO exhausted we couldn't lift our head off the pillow... so we decided to take a days rest instead! :shy:
Well we got up this morning to 5 teeny weeny little bits of poo in Colby's litter box ;D and they weren't completely watery!! ;D ;D
Fingers and paws are so well and truly crossed that this is a step in the right direction for him. He has still had some leakage this morning but it is the first sign we have seen of a remotely formed poo! ;)
He is also looking better in himself this morning and it has been so nice to see him first thing in the morning and him not look totally down and dejected.
He has already eaten his brekkie.... almost licking the bowl clean so I hope we are in for a promising day with the little fella! :wish: ;D

well Colby seems to have had a good-ish day today :) After eating all of his brekkie he also tucked straight into his lunch bowl too finishing the whole lot in a single sitting!! :wow:
Scared to jinx anything I would possibly dare to say that we are starting to feel a little more positive about Colby but are still not getting our hopes up as we've been here before!! :tired:
He has been very very tired today and I don't think even a bomb going off would have woken him this afternoon. We had our usual afternoon cuddles where he snuggles in and goes to sleep as I stroke his wee head and match stick paws and he just adores human company and interaction. As soon as you go near him he starts to purr and has started to roll over in anticipation of a tummy rub :Luv2: :Luv2:
He did have some rather gloopy discharge this afternoon though so we had to go for another bath time which he wasn't overly impressed about. Once dried off he settled down for some sleep and a little later he and Nurse Herbie were playing through the bars!
Just about supper time so hopefully we will have a repeat performance of lunch and brekkie and will look forward to (hopefully) more poo in the tray in the morning! :wish: (jings can't believe I'm wishing for pooh and already going through 10 bed changes a day!! :rofl: :rofl: )

sadly..... no poo this morning! :( not even a teeny weeny drop! :(
That said there was hardly any seepage poo on his bedding this morning and only a tiny amount at his wee bum...... so... could it be his wee gut has emptied itself and is now processing all the new stuff going in?? we hope so. :scared:
His tummy isn't bloated so we are trying to take that as a good sign and he was very bright and happy to see us this morning when we went to check on him. ;) He was actually calling for his breakfast when we walked in with his food bowl :wow: and we made it a bit thicker this morning so he had to work a wee bitty harder to eat it. ;)
He didn't clear his bowl in a 1-er although he did eat around 75% of it which was great and then settled down to clean himself and a wee snooze after all that hard work.
The difference in the wee fella over the last 24 - 48 hours has been quite amazing for us and he was even sat trying to play with nurse herbie through the bars of his cage last night :Luv2: :Luv2:
It is so hard not to get carried away and believe that he is going to be OK so we have to keep reminding ourselves to be realistic. That said he is such a little character and we are sure should he make it all the way he will be one little toerag.... but so sweet with it he will be irresistable. :Luv2: :rofl:
He is fast becoming known as the devil cat or Count Colby round here as everyone who see's him comments on his little fang teeth poking out over his bottom jaw..... due to his teeth being those the age of a 7/8 mth old whereas he is only the size of a 10 - 12 wk kitten. It is quite funny to see but I can also assure you that they are one sharp set of nashers... being at the receiving end during bath time isn't something to be repeated! :shocked: :Luv2:

Hopefully, you are all getting a bit more rest now, but I know exactly what you mean about not getting your hopes up, I am always like that and even when Monty reached six months, he still had that look that I knew he wasn't out of the woods and sadly I was proven right.

he is looking a good bit better... more so really in the last 24 hrs although I do think his a/b's and especially the RC Recovery food have helped turn his coat around. ;D We've always had issues getting cats to eat the a/d in the past with no real benefit you can see... but this is the first time we've used the RC stuff.... and will definately be keeping a supply handy!! ;)
We are of course delighted he has put some weight on even if it is only 25 grams! lol :Luv2:
his eye discharge has stopped so that was 1 piece of good news... but instead he has a build up of green discharge at the back end tonight!! We have taken him and bathed it up and he still has a few open sores at his wee bum which is still very ulcerated and swollen but should settle down with time. This is where the infection is coming from so we will just keep up his a/b's and continue to bath it and keep it clean. Probably today is the first day we've been able to really notice it as he hasn't had the constant flow of runny poo! :sick:
He definately has a build up of food in his upper intestine which we can feel as there is still nothing really between it and your hand so makes it easier to feel. All we have to hope is that it starts / continues to move down the intestine and pop out at the end! ;D Although whilst there is none it is giving his little bottom time to continue to heal without the added pain of poo-ing.
Nurse Herbie is as watchful as always and has surprised us all by his devotion to little Colby. Lets just say Herb wasn't at the front of the queue when they handed out the brains and his lazy eye (from the eye infection at 5 days old) makes him look worse! lol but he is a gorgeous wee soul and Colby certainly looks to him for comfort when he needs it and Herbie lovingly provides. :Luv2:

I often wonder why people assume cats don't care (ts elliott has a lot to answer for on that score). The number of times I have seen a cat adopt a sickly youngling makes it clear that they are able to recognise need and have a will to nurture that need. So glad this wee one has an 'aunty' to care for him and to keep an eye on him and give him love. So glad he is in your care and being properly tended. Will continue to keep my fingers crossed for this one.

morning guys... still no poo! :( :scared: and with the build up of green discharge at his wee bum we decided to take him to see vet this morning.
They are pleased to see a difference in the wee fella but are still very concerned about the lack off poo in the last couple of days and feel he still should have passed something by now. We are going to give him another 48 hours and if still nothing will go for another enema as we don't want to condemn the wee fighter as he is trying so so hard to fight on. We want to give him every chance possible but also have to accept that if his bowel won't work there is nothing we can do.... and we are finding it really really hard to distance ourselves in case we have to make that decision. :'(
I hope and pray that day will not come but also have to try to be realistic. :(
We are to continue bathing his wee bum a few times a day and apply cream and along with his a/b's hope that it settles down and heals up sooner rather than later. Hopefully then it will make the whole experience far less painfull for the wee man and we just have to hope that everything on the inside is working as it should!?! :wish: :wish:
Helen - its the tins of RC Recovery... great stuff and smells like chicken soup! mmm far more appetising that then a/d.

thanks Guys! :hug: you don't know how much it means to have your support... especially for Colby. Finding today really hard ... when you think on it his little life depends on whether or not he can do a basic function ....pooo!!!!! :(
We have come to the conclusion this morning that the puss isn't coming from the open sores at his wee bum but in fact from inside the end of his anus. (lovely I know) So we are keeping on top of it and bathing and clearing it regularly and he has had his a/b's to help combat the infection. SO perhaps this may be what is causing the problems in poo'ing?? well its a possibility and I'll take anything I can get at the moment if it helps him live!
He did however polish off his brekkie quite happily and is currently looking for lunch which I am about to prepare! lets hope this afternoon brings better news! :( :wish: :wish: :wish:

Try not to despair too much, you are doing everything possible for little Colby ,its still early days and youth is on his side. We lost count of the number of enemas young Pedro needed.
If Colby needs another enema would it be worth asking vet to do a barium xray at the same time? that way you would be able to see what you are dealing with.

morning guys! its not looking good :( :( and has hit us like a flamin freight train this morning even though we knew he may not make it as he's really won us over. :'( :'( :'(
We have left him with the vets this morning who are going to hopefully do another enema to clear out the bowel as it is compacted again but the vets opinion is that the bowel is no longer functioning and the issues at his anus are related to this. This being the case then there is no hope whatsoever for the wee fella. :'(
The vets have agreed to this (and final ) enema in the hope of giving him one last chance to get things moving but are very skeptical it will work.
Don't really know what else to say at the mo.... all we can hope is that a miracle happens for the wee man. :'( :'( :wish: :wish:

It has really knocked us for 6 and then some. We were expecting to pick him up this afternoon and perhaps have to deal with losing him in a few days so it has hit us really hard this morning.
We were essentially correct in our assumption last night of his anus closing up, however it had happened on a much more serious level than we had thought. Our initial thoughts were the soft tissue had knitted together on healing but this wasn't quite the case.
Due to the severe inflamation of the tissue in and around his anus and it having been that way for so long it had turned the tissue fibrous (think thats the right word). As the swelling began to settle it then became rock solid and as a result blocked his anus and lower intenstine completely. Because of this there is absolutely nothing we could have done and it was blocked solid so nothing could pass in or out and he would never be able to pass anything and therefore we had no option but to let him go.
We havent' stopped crying since we got the call as it was just not what we were expecting at all and I don't think either of us were ready to say goodbye to the wee fella.
All we can do is try to think of the happy times he had with us and the fun he had with Nurse Herbie and hope that he is at peace now. We also hope that the evil :censored: who caused him all this suffering gets their just desserts.

I'm so sorry. I've followed him without posting and was so hoping for a miraclem. You did everything you could and at least his last days were filled with warmth, food and love which is a better way to leave this world than what would have happened if he didn't have you.

When I saw the photos of his big trusting eyes, he really got to me. I know you did everything possible. It is so unfair that a poor little bundle has to go through so much in such a short time. We can only take comfort in the fact that you spared him a lot of pain and distress and all he knew at the end was warmth and comfort from you :hug:

Today has been a really hard day and we are both really numb and still in shock I think really. Although we had it in the back of our mind that this may have to happen we were getting prepared for possibly making a decision in a few days ...... just didn't expect it to hit us today with absolutely no other options for the wee man and completely helpless to do anything for him.
He was such a brave brave soul and such a big character. We miss him dearly and just hope he is pain free and happy playing at the bridge.
We have brought his wee body home with us this afternoon and are going to bury him here, by our other special babes. He deserves to be at rest close to the only place he's known love and kindness.

I am so very sorry to hear this. At least this courageous little fella didn't die alone, terrified and in agony but well-fed, cared-for and with dignity. You gave him that.

I am so very sorry he lost his battle, but at least he got to know love, and allowed to go with dignity after everything possible had been tried, he was very lucky for that. RIP little one.

Colby was buried this morning in a special place in the garden now to be known as Colby's Corner :Luv2: albeit Paul came up with it on a whim but its quite fitting.
He is now with our special babes 'at home' and we hope he is happy, pain free and playing with all our other bridge babes.
We miss you baby Colby, here only a short while... but you left with our hearts.

Paul and I were discussing last night and are going to edge off that area of the garden and put in some nice plants and make up a little stake with Colby's Corner written on it and put a little verse in too. Once we get it all organised we will put up a little photo for everyone so that they can see his little spot in the garden.
Lynds came to visit yesterday and brought some gorgeous red tulips which currently mark his grave. Thank you Lynds :hug:
