I just got an email from Vet UK. They are recalling and/or replacing the Cystease they've been selling recently as it has additives in it, which may make it less palatable and so is not just pure N-Adenyl glucosamine as claimed on the bottle. They insist it is still safe. It had better be because I have been giving Swampy 1 1/2 a day. I've asked for the replacement asap. Does anyone know what the various additives are please?
this is their email:
You have recently purchased a 100 tablet pack of Cystease S

> number 17719). This product should contain only 125mg
> N-acetyl
> glucosamine, however, it has just been brought to our attention by the manufacturers that this batch contains the original
> Cystease formulation. In addition to 125mg N-acetyl glucosamine this batch also
> included ingredients not mentioned on the pot (alfalfa 75mg, pepsin 15mg, bromelain + papain 15mg and lactoacidophilus 2.8mg).
> This formulation of Cystease was used for years before the launch of Cystease S and is completely safe for your cat. However, you may

spoke to the vet. He says in some ways the old formula with lactoacidophilus is better!

Bromelian and papain are prebiotics (as opposed to probiotics!), don't know about pepsin. Alfalfa as they said could cause tummy upsets, don't why they ever included it anyway!

thanks Gillian. He seems ok on what he's got. However the caps don't look extra big to me (I think someone on here ordered and got huge capsules, which they then replaced for free? I think Vet UK have got muddled with all their cystease orders). It's quite possible that Swampy is taking the smaller, pure ones after all. Alfalfa sounds like it could be gassy stuff. Isn't it what horses eat?!

This is Leanne's thread - sounds like Cystease have been slow to recall as this was almost 3 weeks ago that the manufacturers admitted to her that the larger capsules contained more/different ingredients
Well it turns out that the manufacturer ran out of smaller capsules so used bigger ones, our lovely vet nurse at work said to them that's not the point as the capsules are a lot bigger and full of powder so they must have changed the ingredients. They called her back and said the manufacturers said they had changed the product for this but rather naughtily hadn't told them and were packaging them in the normal packaging!!!

Bromelain (from pineapple) papain (from papaya) and pepsin are all enzymes that help break down proteins, i recall reading about alfalfa when taz was having problems but i cant remember what it was used for. I wouldnt worry about them being dangerous

Tiggy's Mum - Helen is right. I noticed this about a month ago and got in touch with Vet UK and Ceva.
I then got the same email last week.
I don't think its dangerous in anyway its just a "old" way of making cystease and the tubs never had their labels changed. I have to say I wasn't going to give them to Jess though because the size difference.
