Hi
My kitten has just been put onto Hills dd tins and I cannot find a lid for keeping them fresh once they are opened as they are bigger than a normal tin. Anyone got any ideas?

I do!! I have the same problem. They are the same as a tuna tin so its difficult to find a lid that fits. I have some at home that sit in a drawer for no good reason!
Anyway, either use some tin foil to keep it fresh, and I then heat up the food for 10 secs in the microwave after.
But as a solution I went to John Lewis and they have in their kitchen section where they have all the fun gadgets gingham plastic container covers that are elasticated and come in a huge pack for £1.99.
They're diff sizes but I can use most of the small ones on the tins.

I keep it in a tupperware as on beans etc, they always tell you to transfer contents and you shouldn't leave them in the tin - no idea why :Crazy: but you can get really small foodsavers and they are excellent - the addis ones from Woolworths are good. Before that I used to put it in a foodbag but than can be messy :evillaugh:

I heard that about tins too but my mum always said to me that provided the contents are not in the tin for more than 24 hours in the fridge its still safe..my mum could be wrong of course, but I've never researched it.
I like the idea of foodsavers though, they are really cheap so a good idea.

You can get ones that are only about 2 inches deep (got mine in ikea) and about 8 inches square. So when you take the lid off, it's a ready bowl :evillaugh:
(Saves washing a foodsaver AND a bowl!) - also you can take it out of the fridge to warm up a bit before you feed kitty :P

You can get lids for pet food tins that fit 2 sizes - inc the larger size like the Hills tins. I used to have some but forget where I got them now as its a while since I used tins. I think it was just at a supermarket so it would be worth checking out the pet section there to see if they sell any, if you haven't already.

Yes I have looked in the supermarkets and pet shops in our area and can only find the smaller size.
I have just been into town and got a small foodsaver (thanks for the tip Mark) for 39p so that will be just fine I am sure.

When I rang Hills originally to complain about l/d, they offered to send me some lids for the cans (the 156g size) so give them a call if you want to store food in the tin.
I always decant mine into glass containers, but then I'm neurotic and the cats elderly and vomit prone. It probably depends on how long you want to store the food unmunched.

I used to always leave ad diet in the tin and put it in fridge, the vet gave me one lid but others I managed to but drom Sainsburys I think. As lexy says it was only in tin for 24 hrs at most.

I was told you don't put tins in the fridge because their metal/tin content can damage the fridge in someway - then again I am blonde and may have just been completely gullible................................. :scared:

No thery wont damage the fridge but somethings damaged the metal in the tins if it is left in there once its opened, ie tomato sauce, but the Hills tins have I think a special lining, havent used one for 18 months and have forgotten 4yrs of using them grrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Anyway I know there was no problem LOL

I have never thought of taking the remaining cat food out of tins - but then I dont do it for my own food, I always leave tins in the fridge - although not cat food, 3/4 of them eat upstairs anyway, so easier to be able to pull off a shelf. I have always just put the lid back down, but I know the rescue use tin foil over them.

I looked it up - a lot of sites tell you not to store open cans in the fridge but the nottingham council one tells you why.
"Don't store food in open cans as the food may react with the metal and allow the metal to migrate into the food"

What is the difference between storing food in open cans and the fact it has already been stored in cans for possibly months?

Its the addition of air delsey and it causes a chemical reaction with some foods on the metal

Mark it does not matter whether the can is in a fridge of not, the same thing would happen.

I've always been vaguely aware that you shouldn't store food in opened tins, but I've always done it and nobody has ever come a cropper as a result. I don't use big tins much now so there's rarely anything left over but if I do I just pop a lid on them and put them in the fridge. It's rarely for more than 24 hours.

Ah right - oh well, haven't made any of us ill in at least 5 years of doing it - I eat some foods straight out of the tin too!!

That is because of the compound of the tin, however nowadays most many tins are lined.

I have some Lidl creamed rice in the cupboard - not quite so appealing. That's probably why it's been in there for about a year! (if it was ambrosia it would have been eaten same day! - ideally with strawberrt jam and shortbread :drool;

If anyone else is interested in getting these lids. I just e-mailed Hills and they replied asking for my address. They send me 2 and I received them the very next day.
