My Mum bought me a gorgeous black leather sofa when we moved into our new house and the cats are allowed nowhere near it!!

Stu, I ordered mine 10 weeks before I moved into my house (and 11 weeks before I adopted Lexy).

I guess it depends on the cat, but I was a bit worried. I have two sofas and they do have claw marks but only because Lexy loses her footing. She doesn't claw them deliberately, she's very good with her scratch post.

I'd wait it out and see how it is received in your home. There are ways to stop them clawing (Sticky Paws) but if Misty isn't that keen on your current sofa he probably will ignore the new ones.

I've had mine for eight years and they don't scratch it at all.  They are allowed on it.  In fact its Summer's fav place.

They're good little girls you know  ;) ;)

errrm Misty is VERY attached to our current settee (if you know what i mean :tired:) I just gave away one of the scratch tree's to my neighbour, cause he never used it
although He did sometimes use the old one, which Is now trimmed down to just a scratch pole, this new couch will be my 9th one since becoming a slave to Furbabes
needless to say the onslaught of claws have killed every single one  :(
I did ask the sales person about cats clucking the leather and he said " Oh they wont touch it!! I have a cat myself and He never goes near it !!"
Yeah, Right ... and I was born with these size10 dr martin boots on (anything to make a sale)

Invest in some Sticky Paws, Stu. If he really loves your sofas the likelikhood is he's going to like the leather ones too. And he's getting on in years so his inclination to obey a command of "no" might be very small  ;)

I have two black leather sofas and they dont scratch them but they have claw marks due to them slipping , especially cos they like to sit on the arms or back.

I covered them with throws but they slip too.

I clearly remember the first scratch marks and Ducha decided he wanted to sit on the arm next to me, he only has three legs and I only have one fully working hand and I watched as he slowly started to slip which quickly develeped into a fast landslide leather slide and watched helplessly as he grabbed and dug claws in and skied backwards....................sigh

It was a cross between being totally helpless and not being able to figure out how to stop him in a second or two   :scared: :scared:

I have a leather suite and Charlie doesn't scratch at it.  It does have a few little scratch marks from where we have been playing and he has pounced on his toys.

My two haven't touched the sofa's but the footstool is a different matter. It seems to have become a bit of a territorial item. Both love sitting, sleeping on it & when the mood takes takes them play fight over it so it has quite a few scratch marks but none of them are deliberate.

Thanks Folks, so basically - he might, he might not but if he does it will be an accident  :innocent:
Ither way I'll expect a few scratches here and there :(
2 be honest the current settee is in very good nick considering, and one of my friends is taking it for
his house, we did get offered a 3 year old dark blue leather suite a few months back from my sister
in-law for free, but I said no, I dont like leather and it wouldnt go with the decor. a lot of head nipping
from other half and ..... why do women always get thier own way ??

I liked your story Gill  :evillaugh:

p.s. thanks 4 the link Sam  :)

Mine is kinda shagged too. At first they scratched it a lot, but with training, pet repellant and me saying no everytime they went to scratch it, they dont scratch it anymore but still a bit too late now. Mine has been scratched and wrecked from early on, on the second day after we got it Ted had a good old morning strech and claw on the sofa, this is the corner they started on first. They dont claw it now all 5 of them they are very good at using their posts. I would also suggest spraying Mistys cat post with catnip so he knows where he is allowed to scratch.

Good luck  :evillaugh:

Erm if I say that my Husband and I have never argued over anything as much as we did over sofa scratching!!!!

Our new sofas arrived 7 weeks after Jess did!! The backs of the sofa and arm chairs are covered in pulls and scratches we cover them with throws to protect them as much as we can but it looks horrendous. Jess and Milo have 3 scratching posts and a tree but still scratch the sofas I am hoping its something that will drop off with age as they are only young (1 and 2) but I suspect not.

Good luck.

Like a number of the others, my cat doesn't scratch the leather sofa and armchair but there are a few "staying on" claw marks (that "distressed" look is everso "in", you know).  Word of caution - don't put the sticky tranparent strips, the ones that are supposed to deter your cats from scratching, on the sofa - when you take them off you will realise that the cat would have done less damage!  :tired:

We have had a couple of leather suites, none of my cats have deliberately scratched them but claws have accidentally marked them.  Until....we got Byron and our last settee on 1 arm was shredded where she used it as a scratching post Ithink because it was quite solid (she has a post but prefers the furniture) We were going to wait to get a new one while we had her but it was so bad we bought one just before Christmas and due to the shape she hasn't touched this (touch wood) however, it is a little higher and she can't jump up now so we have to lift her or she will literally dig her claws in and we have a couple of scratches already.  I always keep a cover of some sort on the seats but I've had to get a larger one tucked in the back of the seat incase she does it when we are out as it just slides off.

We have an ancient leather sofa which tbh, we couldn't have cared less if they'd scratched, but the never have in a claw sharpening way, only in the way that things would get scratched if you were walking around with sharp things on your feet. They jump down onto it from a great height, throw themselves at it and generally use their claws for hanging on not scratching, so it has various holes, but due to its ancientness, they are only obvious if you look very very closely.

We have leather, and have the marks where they slip.
But i have caught Rolo with his claws up the front, and heard a scratchin just before.
Splitz decided she would use it as a scratchin post, till i jumped up and she looked at me & ran  :-:
She has a leaher cushion she likes to sit on & she does'nt scratch at that

They have a leather sofa upstairs they have wrecked, but now they dont touch that one ?

He looks super realxed  ;D ;D

You must have a very big room there, lovely. I have to have my sofas covered cos they dig there needle points in the leather to stop slipping and then I catch one parading or running along the back or sitting on the arms. The latter is a recipe for disaster cos arms are soft and padded and they slip and then grab..........sigh......ducha actually skiied backwards off one arm grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I have to cover mine up too, Byron can't jump up very well now so she grips her claws in.  She also used to use one end as a scratching post but after quite a bit of work I've managed to stop that fingers crossed xx

you will have far less scratch marks on one with those kind of arms I think, Stuart - mine has the rounded arms with the leather stretched tight, and that shows up the most, because the cats tend to run over them

next time I will buy a sofa with the squishy sort of upholstery

My Living room is 14ft x 14.5ft, I remember that because Carpet had to get joins in it

It's just been over this last few day's and I'm kinda concerned that I have noticed that Misty is Hesitant
when it comes to Jumping onto the Bed or Settee  :scared: ( I'll lift Him up If I'm there )
I am Still giving Him His Corta Flex solution for His arthritis and I haven't really heard any click's and creak's for a while
maybe it's just His old age or Muscle wastage  :(
He Doesn't seem to be in pain, just isn't confident in Jumping for now " think His eye sight may be dodgy also  :( "
( hope it's just a phase He's going through )
He still get's His bad days every now and then along with the good

and Yes we now have a cover for the settee ( a Snuggle  :evillaugh: )

I too have a leather suite and it is covered in scratches not deliberate scratches though my kittens tend to have a mad half an each day either runing up and down the stairs or over the suite hence the scratches they also sleep inside the sofa as it has flaps in the back bless them.It is insured but i'm not sure if it would cover as many scratches as there are, i thought i'd wait until the babies are older till i phone the insurance company up ;D
