Title: Spaying advice please?
Post by: caledonia on January 11, 2009, 13:56:03 PM
Hi all,

Kitten Nina is booked in to be spayed on the 23rd of January following the vet check Wednesday. I don't work Fridays so thought it would be best to be around etc to take her and collect her and this was the first Friday they had available....popular day!

However since this was arranged we had the awful news that OH's father had passed away so he left Friday for overseas and will be home for at least the 40 days of mourning. Which leaves me with a few days I am going to have work commitments that take me away and there is no one around for the cats.

I am away the weekend of the 24th with work but obvioulsy OH was going to be around, now he isnt. I have a neighbour that will come in and sit with the cats (I am away overnight that is all, but all day on the Sat & Sun) which is the weekend right after Nina being spayed.

I was thinking I might be better to re-schedule it for the the following week when I will be around all weekend. I just feel awful having her go in for this op and then the day after I am dashing off - what do folks think? Will she be unfazed by it all and am I worrying too much?

There is so much I need to organise with OH's sudden departure inbetween being devastated at whats happened that hmm I just can't think straight!!

I can honestly say that everytime I've had a pet neuterered, they have come home as if nothing has happened so I personally think it's better to have her done and do what you need to do as long as there's someone to keep a bit of an eye on her but it's really about what you feel comfortable doing.

So sorry to hear about you loss

I am sorry for your loss

I think as its a female cat you should reschedule it for the following week unless they will agree to gluing the scar, so that she does not have to wear a collar.

This would be the best way for her any way but if they will not do this reschedule so you will be there that weekend.

However I am sure you can insist that they do the closing up after the op as you want as long as you tell them in advance.

Others will know more about this.

better to be speyed earlier in case she goes into heat too.

Sorry to hear about your OH's Dad

I think I'd reschedule as I wouldn't want to leave her 'alone' so soon after the op.  When the boys were neutered (much smaller op anyway) they were fine when they first got home but I had to take Lu back to the vets the next day, or day after can't remember now!, as he was very subdued and was leaking from the area in question.  If you do reschedule i'd book her in for a Thursday, you can drop her off before work and pick her up when you've finished.  That way if she does need to go back to the vets it won't be closed for the weekend and you won't 'waste' a day of potential recovery time that you can be with her for.  It will also keep your mind of the op being at work.

Thanks folks - think I will call the vet in the morning and try and re-arrange then.

The problem I have with taking her in on a Thursday is I technically start work at 7.30am and work on the other side of the city....OH works nights so he is in during the day for the cats or at least until lunchtime then I am in the back of five so I am aware they are alone a lot more whislt he is away.

I also dont drive - although the car is currently in Manchester as OH had to get down south to get a flight home to Kabul so its public transport for me. I will have a think and see if there is a way round it! I maybe could tray and start later and just finnish on site if you know what I mean lol!! Its just difficult naviagting from home to vets to work hence the Friday booking - although normally OH would oblige.

The vet is open on a Saturday and the vet is a total gem who happily takes calls at home believe it or not - so will see what availablility they have for the week after.

Thanks everyone

I wouldnt reschedule, it is such a minor thing, and if you leave it another week, she could come back into heat, which would then delay things again. The rescue Mabel is from neuters everything on a Thurs and rehome on a Fri, and they obviously have no issues, so the fact you are only away overnight and there is a neighbour around, I wouldnt worry. The bulk of mine have been done during the week with me back at work the day after.

Oh I thought I replied to this last night but clearly not!!

Just spoke to Vet and they have said the same thing Desley - its such a minor thing these days that she will be fine, maybe a bit sleepy on the day but back to normal the next day! Said there is only one stitch and even if she nicks that it is such a small incision and there is another inside!

Things have changed since my child hood cats with the big plastic bibs and ugly stitches down the side!!

Oh well will leave it as is!!

Thanks

Its so quick and simple they act like nothing has happened, not like a human who has the same op!
