Title: Schaille is having a dental today
Post by: Liz on December 22, 2008, 10:32:23 AM
Our little Schaille all 5.1kgs is having some major dental work today, we both took her to the vet this morning - Robin wouldn't let me go on my own due to the loss of Tiger last Monday.

She was as good as gold on Friday for her boosters and Program and even let the vet give her a full health check including her mouth which is when the bad teeth came to light, vet reckoned she shouldn't be eating - she just loves her food even during the great eascape Schaille spent the summer of 2006 living outside until she was trapped nearly 3 months ans she hadn't lost an ounce others lost about a kilo not this smart litle feral she figured out where all the food was and probably ate most of it!

She is a little feral poppet a runner not a fighter and we will be picking her up later on today am hoping its when I take Sunny in for his booster so she can come home then if not it will have been 3 visits today!

So please keep your paws crossed that she will be ok she is 4 and a half and has her 2 full sister Sparkle who is black and white and Xian our shorthaired brindle tortie pacong currently - both this pair are reed thin though Shaille got the hips!

Good wishes for Shaille  - I'm sure she'll be fine if Baby was anything to go by - she came home the same evening after having 3 extractions and slice out of her tongue, demanded food and scoffed it down in record time LOL!

Schaille is being picked up by her daddy at 4pm - poor thing has lost all the teeth on the right hand side of her mouth except the incisor and 4 large back ones on the other side.

The vets did advise when we were there with Sunny the dog for his booster that she had been a star performer for them when being knocked out she just sat there and let them get on with it - she is a runner not a fighter and tends to freeze in odd places - in fact she has been the only cat today that didn't scratch a vet so she is a little feral star! :Luv2:

Awwww, hope she's fine later, but she will probably surprise you and demand food as Gillian said  :)

Well Robin duly picked her up and on arriving home she shot out of the box and upstairs like an olpympic athelete!

She was offered the RC sensitivity food and duly turned her nose up at it and tucked in to Felix in tomato sauce!

She is back on Chrostmas eve at 21pm for a checkup as she had so much done in her poor mouth, we are just waiting Januarys visits with her 2 sisters for a tooth hat trick - all are ferals trapped at 5 months and still with us due to their hair ripping out tendancies when touched all have mellowed over the past 4 years in fact Xian is now indoor/outdoor but untouchable and Sparkle still is indoor only like Schaile they will come on in their own tim

Will update after Wednesday's visit

Awww, I'm glad to hear she's doing well.

I used to do the dentals at the animal hospital where I worked, and it's really not a horrid procedure for them to overcome (even if they have to have extractions).  It's just necessary to put them on a light anesthesia so you can get into their little mouths and scale their teeth.

Just a little hint, unless you want to continue to have her teeth scaled at much expense, is get some cat treats that are good for their teeth.  I know they sell Feline Greenies nearly all over the world.

If you can be consistent and give them one or two morsels of these in place of the table scraps, your cat's teeth will be healthy, and healthy teeth can add two or three years to the end of their little lives.  It's hard to get them to switch, but nearly ALL cats love Feline Greenies.  When they beg, make it a ritual, and put a couple of morsels on a plate right where they usually eat.  Then switch their diet gradually to dry food and plenty of water, and their teeth will stay healthy.

Oh I do just sound like a lecturing vet technician don't I.  Sorry.   :shy:

I have heard negative things about Feline Greenies on a US forum I use, so never looked into them, and there are plenty of websites that disagree about dry food helping teeth. My two are 16 and 18, and only the 18yo has had to have a dental - she was fed on purely dry food before coming to me, my 16yo has more wet food and has perfect teeth.

Not ALL cats do poorly on wet food, and clearly there are cases where some cats can only have wet food because of sensitive tummies.  But the point I wanted to make is the feeding of table scraps.  VERY bad for kitties.

yes, I agree with table scraps, but I dont believe a dry food only diet is the way to go for teeth.

Well  after hissing anf spitting at Daddy whilst he put her in the box to go to the vet our little star Scahille surpassed herself for the vet and the vet nurse by allowing them to look in her mouth and all is well bar one tiny bit which is still ragged but the vet is amazed bu her healing and her general demeanour for a feral!

She doesn't have to go back now till June 2009 for her Program injection! ;D
