Hi
I have had a couple of visits to the vets now with my 9 month old kitten Honey. The first one was after we noticed a small place on her head that was bleeding. The vet said it could possibly be a alergy and gave her an injections and some cream for us to use. About a week later (yesterday) the place had still not got any better and in fact Honey was making it bigger by scratching it.
Anyway another trip to the vets and the vet took some swabs and looked at them under the microscope. We now have her on antibiotics and steroid tablets plus cream. And she is now being moved over to Hills D/D in case it is a food alergy.
Does anyone else have a kitten/cat with alergies? How was it discovered etc? I would be interested to hear anybody elses story.

Hi Claire, many years ago I had a rescue, Moggy, who got into a nervous habit of scratching her head raw when she was a kitten. The vet was completely stuck so my late Mum suggested that as a last resort, the vet remove Mog's back claws so that she couldn't make her head bleed. It worked. She then stopped scratching. Both of my current boys have had nervous habits and were put on a short dose of cortisone to break the habit.

Thank you that was most interesting. Im so glad our vet knew what the problem was nearly straight away - although by the sounds of it it may not necessarily be correct. Will have to see what happens. Honey has stopped scratching the area so much so hoping that the tablets etc will work. She also has her expensive Venison food too.

Claire, doesn't sound like a food allergy to me, though may be stress-related eczema, or parasite. If the latter, the vet would have easily spotted the offending beast.
Max, a little disturbed by your post: do you mean that the vet de-clawed the cat? Are you in UK?

Certainly reads like declawing which we all know in the UK is illegal and considered barbaric.

Read my post "no christmas turkey for Maisy", it sounds exactly like what we are going through, we were eventully told it was probably a food allergy and are also on the dd venison food, although Maisy is still scratching just as much as ever. We are off to see a specialist (with the intention of either finding out exactly what she is allergic too or the possibility it is a skin condition) this Wed as my Maisy (now 10 months) has been surrering with this since September and it has been going on and on and on and on and on!!!!!!.

Thank I have read the post and agree that it does sound the same.
Honey has been on Antibiotics and steroid tablets now since thursday evening and the place on her head now was a scab on it and is starting to come off. So I know she is not scratching it as much as she was as on thursday it was really red and bleeding. I am taking her back this evening to see the vet again and see what they say.
I havent been advised how we could definitely find out what is causing this so am going to ask tonight and see what our vet thinks.
