Title: Heart or Head?
Post by: Gillian Harvey on February 16, 2007, 17:20:56 PM
Well my heart says I should adopt 2 colourpoint (my fave!) persians of 12 and 13 whose owner has died and the husband is ill so can't cope with them now. My head says, I've already got 10 (had more than that before) but sort of got used to 'only' having 10, not sure about going through all the introductions again, and of course 2 more sets of vet bills and 2 more mouths to feed.

The plus side is that I know the original breeder (it was her that contacted me to see if I'd have them) so I know the temperament will be lovely, easy going, sociable and prob easy to integrate. I really feel sad for them because their mum died suddenly just before xmas and their dad is going downhill fast, he has carers coming in several times a day, so their little world has been turned upside down.

I know only I can decide whether to have them or not - but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts, pros, cons etc etc?

Ahhh, Gillian! I'm a person based purely on emotion! Everyone around me has to be my "rational thinking." If you feel you have the time, patience, and money and don't feel it would cause too much trouble with your current cat family, I say go for it! :)

LOL! - trouble is I don't have anyone around to be my 'rational thinker' - I have to try and do both! Thanks for your input - here's some pics of them, Jasper is the redpoint (terribly messy eyes - just want to get my hands on 'em and clean 'em up!) and Zeta is the blue-cream point.

Rationally. can you afford them
Do you have the space
Do you have time to groom another too and everything else that another two means
How will the other 10 react
have they known any other cats and how happy would they be with 10 new friends
What will happen to them if you dont have them
Not so rational
Would you like them
They look gorgeous
Will another two make so much difference

With you they have somewhere to live in comfort with an already trained slave, speakiang a a Mum of 37 plus a couple of strays you will never notice after a while and 12 don't eat that much more than 10.

So go with your heart they will be so greatful and your other furkids will love you again soon! :innocent:

Gill: What will happen to them if you dont have them? Followed by

Lyn: At least if they went with you they would be going to a good knowledgable home?

he he! Just seen the rest of these messages - hopeless, the lot of you!  ;D

 :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

Afford them? - hmmm, well just!
Space? - yep think so, 3 bed house, 3 rooms downstairs not bad size, lots of giant cat climbing posts, outdoor space - large safe fenced areas, plus long garden
Time to groom? - yep, lost 2 old persians last year, so its like back up to numbers againi  ;D
Other 10's reactions? - well prob some of them hissy at first, but all been used to new faces
2 new ones reactions? - well, that I just don't know - they've only ever been used to each other, however I have taken on cats that havent been used to others before without too much probs.

If I don't have them? - I dunno what will happen to them, its possible they might find the perfect home (even more suitable than mine  :evillaugh:
Do I want them? - Yeh, I think I probably do! (notice I've said 'think' and 'probably'!)
2 more make much diff? - no, not really.

So, I'm going to phone later today, or tomorrow - just to have a chat about the cats you understand!  :evillaugh:

Let your heart lead you and let your head guide you once they are in your home, If you feel you can do it, then you will. I'm sure you are more than able to look after these old babes, After all it is happiness that makes the heart content.  :)

Ps- if you only got room for 1 I would willingly take Sam, he's adorable. :Luv:

:car: I'm on the way, lol.

OK, OK! I've phoned her (Jane, the daughter in law) very nice lady, had a good chat, she said she couldnt take them on because she's got 2 cats, haa! Anyway, she's going to broach the subject with Reg (the elderly owner whose wife has died) - he knows they've got to go, but he doesnt know yet that a 'potential' home may have been found. Very sad for him giving them up after all these years.

Mum's put a downer on it (theres my voice of reason!) she thinks it will upset my lot as I havent introduced any new ones for a few years now.

Ps- if you only got room for 1 I would willingly take Sam, he's adorable. :Luv:

:car: I'm on the way, lol.

Oooh, I'm putting Sam under lock and key  :sneaky:

Does that mean when anything happens to her father in law that that if the house is his and she has one she won't want it? You can bet your life it doesn't.

I know Michelle, I do too, but he just can't cope with the grooming and eye cleaning now, he's lost the use of one hand so makes it v. difficult and has back problems. I even offered to go over every couple of months to bath the cats if that would help him to keep them, but that doesnt seem to be an option, and I do wonder if the family is pushing him into this a bit.  Currently the daughter in law is coming in to comb them (don't know why that couldnt continue) - but I suppose in the end they would need a new home anyway.

Does that mean when anything happens to her father in law that that if the house is his and she has one she won't want it? You can bet your life it doesn't.

You cynic Ela!  :evillaugh: - that thought had entered my mind too though!

Well, these guys are coming to stay in 2 weeks time  :yesss:

Although they are 12 and 13 yrs old - they've only ever had their initial kitten vaccinations, so decided it would probably be best to have the full cat flu course before coming to me, rather than just the booster,  to be on the safe side.  So they had their first jab yesterday, next one in 2 wks, then over to me that weekend.

So watch this space!  :attention:

how was the old man giving them up , do you think he would get a domestic short hair old cat from rescue that he could manage to care for and to keep him company or is he not bothered for a cat at all

Thats what I'm hoping Susanne! I introduced a little white Persian Crystal once and the first time I let her out of the room she went straight downstairs, mingled with the others at teatime and no-one batted an eyelid! Doesnt always happen like that though.

Havent got 'em yet Cosmic! couple of weeks, because they've still got to have their second cat flu jab. I don't know about the old man, he's not really well himself and not very mobile, so its not just a case of grooming and eye care, its the general day to day care of a cat I think. Its a shame.

The daughter in law is bringing them over to me, she said her father in law wasnt really mobile enough to come too.
