When Milly saw the vet yesterday she said that she thought Milly's kidneys were a bit on the small side. She didn't really mention any more about what the implications of that were, she just said she'd suggest some blood tests in the next few weeks once she's finished her medication for her poorly tum.
I will take Milly back and see my usual vet soon and will ask her then, I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas in the meantime?

how old is milly?
franta has one small kidney but he is 15yrs old. but as far as i know the other one is working fine , so not a problem at present.
however depending on the reason for them being small and what blood tests show this could be CRF or soon. its best to ask the vet all the questions .....i have seen frantas on xray and he has stone and maybe some crystals blocking it,,,,,,,,,,,,they were gonna send his xrays to an expert to ask what couyld be done but as he has taken over a month to get back to normal after an ordinary op and that his age is old for huis breed, i am not sure i would want to put him through surgury, especially as he would have to travel to bristol which is about 2 hrs journey from here.

Just means that they need regular bloods to make sure both are working well - it is possible to only have one kidney and no CRF, but they do normally advise checks to ensur all is fine and they may suggest a diet change to lessen the work the kidneys have to do.

Sorry, me again...how long does it usually take for blood test results to come back? I know they have an in house lab but have a vague recollection that the full bloods get sent somewhere else. Does this sound normal? She's having them taken on Monday - I want to know whether I'm likely to be left fretting over Christmas!

Sam is having bloods done on Mon, and they are hoping the lab side (thyroid) will be back on Tues - they courier the bloods over and fax the results back.

Thanks - she's had them done and said I should know all the results tomorrow. Fingers crossed everything will be normal :scared:

Results are back - kidney enzymes are showing at or slightly above top end of normal so now I have to try and get a urine sample from her...that's going to be fun :Crazy:

If you want it sorted before xmas its much easier to ask them to take the sample, it can take days to catch them in the tray :evillaugh: :luck:

do you ever buy those small, microwaveable curries from the supermarket? they come in little round, black, fairly shallow dishes that dishwash well. I use those for Swampy's urine samples (1 a week at present). Just wait for him to squat, then shove it under his whatnot. You don't have to catch all that much for the test. Works like a dream (except on the home visit when the vet was 'expressing' him and he missed it and peed on the vet's hand!).

Yeah we did discuss it, but she'll be totally freaked by that so I thought it better that I at least try here first! The vets are only closed Thur/Fri and open at the weekend so it's not too much of a problem. I didn't have a problem with Geoffrey but Milly usually goes outdoors so she's going to have to be shut in until she produces something. I'll probably shut her in the spare room overnight with the tray filled with those delightful balls and see what happens :Crazy:
Swampmaxmum - yes I know exactly the things you mean, my Father in law has loads of them as those are all he eats - as well as being useful for this purpose, he uses them for categorising all his screws, bolts etc :evillaugh:

Well good news in a way I guess - got the urine sample and my vet has just rung to say she has a bladder infection...so I'm just off to pick up some antibiotics for her, and hopefully she'll pick up soon ;D
