Title: Positive vibes for my step-daughter's lovely cat Jarvis
Post by: LesleyW on December 08, 2008, 20:55:51 PM
Elizabeth, my step-daughter has just phoned to say that her lovely cat Jarvis, 15 years old, that she has had from six weeks of age, has been taken ill.  The vet thinks he has had a high blood pressure "spike" that has affected his retinas and rendered him almost blind.  He has high blood pressure, an irregular heartbeat and his thyroid is enlarged.

He is going in for more tests on Thursday and may need an op to remove his thyroid or may just need medication.

The Vet told Elizabeth he is superb condition for a cat of his age and this has come on suddenly.  She is trying to stay upbeat but I know she is worried about him, as am I.  He has been  a big part of my life and was the reason for me getting my first cat as Jarvis lived with us for some time when Mike and I first got together and I missed him when he left.  Fortunately our neighbour's cat had just had kittens and we homed one and that was the start of my mad cat life.

So please spare a thought for Jarvis and send him some of those wonderful Purrs positive vibes that you are all so good at. :Luv2:

Fingers crossed for him - tell her to be careful if they want to remove his thryoid this week though, they should be stabilised on meds first, and evaluated after 4-6 weeks.

I've just spoken to her again Des and they are going to try medication for three weeks first I think to see if that improves it.  I have just read the links on hyperthyroid on the Health and Behaviour section and he is showing all the signs of a hyperthyroid cat so hopefully medication should sort out the thyroid, the irregular heart and the blood pressure.  I've told Elizabeth what I have read and she is feeling a bit better knowing that the three things seem linked.

It's just a bit of a shock as he looks so healthy.  His coat is lovely when normally hyperthyroid cats show a change in their coats and he has not lost weight or been drinking more.  It just seems to have come on really quick. :(

Glad to hear it and am sure the meds will do wonders, although sadly they dont always regain their sight. Blind cats do adapt well though.

I bet it is a shock, as it is normally quite obvious. Fingers crossed that it isn't too high then, so can be easily sorted.

Jarvis is at the Vets as we speak.

Elizabeth took him in this morning and they took him in the back to do the blood test.  She warned him he was grumpy and would not be happy and they said he would be fine.  Came back five minutes later to say he was not happy and was very strong and they would need to keep him in to sedate him for the blood test.

Elizabeth thinks his eyes have got worse and he cannot see now.  The Vet she saw today confirmed he thought it was all related to hyperthyroidism and wants to get him on medication today.  He said sometime the sight can come back, although never as good as it was, so fingers crossed.

Dylan, her other cat, is being a s*d, wanting to play all the time and frightening Jarvis so she is going to set up a bed, litter tray and bowls in her bedroom and en-suite so Jarvis can have some peace and so that Dylan can still go in and out via the catflap.

Should hopefully have some more news this evening once she has picked him up.

Thank you everyone for all your thoughts and good wishes for Jarvis :Luv2:
