Title: Anyone suffer from an allergy to cats?
Post by: Tinkerbell22 on December 08, 2008, 18:11:57 PM
I am studying for a BA in Animal Behaviour and I am looking to gather information from cat allergy sufferers. If you live in the UK, suffer from cat allergies or know someone that suffers from cat allergies please take a few minutes to complete the attached online questionnaire or pass onto any friends that may suffer.
Many thanks for your time.

I've just filled it in for you.

I get really bad asthma attacks, swollen runny eyes, rashes etc with the majority of cats. At a cat show the other year I came out in huge hives after cuddling a Sphynx which was not pleasant.

Thankfully I have never met a Norwegian Forest Cat or Siberian that I'm allergic to  ;D

Hi there Tinkerbell, do you have Tan's permission for this? I only ask because it is not encouraged for new members to post links in their opening post (I am sure you wll understand that there are risks associated with approaching links from strangers). We are, however all of us keen to encourage students who are interested in improving peoples' understanding of cat ownership, so I am sure you would have little difficulty obtaining permission.

Please message Tan to obtain her permission and clearance.

Thanks  ;D

I too did the survey.

I get very runny eyes and a runny nose, almost like hayfever symptoms.

Strangely I wa at the docs on friday for an eye infection and she asked me whether I always sound as bunged up as I do when I said yes she gave me a nasal spray which seems to be working well at the moment.

I use Beconase nasal spray for my cat allergies and for hayfever in the summer. Seems to work better for the cat allergies than the hayfever.  :)

I can't remember what its called off the top of my head but I'll write it down tonight and let you know in the morning.

I was using Beconase as well and this always worked well but I seemed to lose my sense of smell with it which bothered me, not when cleaning out litter trays though

I take Piriton all year round, well actually Tesco's own generic one, so much cheaper. Only thing is, I've been taking it for so long it doesn't seem to have much effect on my incesssant sneezing sessions and runny nose. It does still help when I absentmindedly stick my fingers in my eyes after touching the cat

I tried Benadryl but it is very expensive and knocks me out, tried for the first time at work, they all thought it most amusing when I could barely drag myself out of my chair!

Never tried a nasal spray as I don't know how effective they'd be, pharmacist has never recommended it, even when I went begging for relief with a particularly bad bout of hayfever in the summer.

Wish I could just magic my allergies away, they seem to be terrible this year.

Nasonex is what the doctor prescribed me, I used to use antihistamines and the doctor told me that would sort out other symptoms but not my nose as they can make noses worse, don't know how true it is but it might explain why I was still always bunged up or had a runny nose.
