Title: Spots or bites or something else?
Post by: weesilvie on December 07, 2008, 19:24:48 PM
Hi all
This certainly isn't a major problem - more baffling than concerning!
I think its probably been since the summer and has built up slowly.  I originally thought Silvie was getting the odd insect bite on her face but recently they seem to be a permanent fixture.  They come up as tiny wee scabby bits , but localised - only on her ears or in the thin fur between her eyes and ears - nowhere else.
They don't seem to be making her scratch any more than usual or to be especially painful for her, but they do look a wee bit sore, especially when a scab gets knocked off.
Don't think its fleas as she shows no other signs of having fleas.
Any thoughts?

it sounds like it might be ear mites- I am trying to find a picture for you to compare with... If it is, then it's easily treatable but definately needs to be treated ASAP.

Earmites or harvest mites, some areas have problems with harvest mites all year now its milder  :tired:

Stronghold and advocate both treat earmites

Don't think it's harvest mites - if I remember right they're orange aren't they?  None of that here.
These simply resemble zits (sorry!) or insect bites, like humans might have.
If ear mites, will Frontline get them?
Will look them up just now.

Have looked them up - don't think it's ear mites either.  Silvie doesn't have any wax build up or any other signs of anything wrong inside her ears - the spots are all on the outside.  She's even got several wee half-bald spots in the fur on her ears from where the scabs have been!
Other spots are in those patches of fur just above her eyes which are a lot thinner than elsewhere.

Yes ear mites are orange
and no i dont think Frontline does ears mites, you need stronghold.
Depending how bad the mites are you might need some ointment aswell

Could you post a pic of the offending spots? Otherwise, the best way to get them diagnosed is to go to the vet.

I did think of doing that, but dismissed myself as a rubbish photographer!  Will give it a go though and post a pic if I get a decent one.
Otherwise, we're due at the vets in January for a booster so I'll certainly ask then, if not beofre.  Don't want to stress her out by taking her to the vets with something that seems to be bothering me more than it is her!  I might even ask tomorrow _ I need to pick up some more drugs for her.

Needless to say, poor Silvie wasn't for having her ears photographed!
Anyway, we were at the vet today for her booster and I asked him about these spots.  he said it could be some kind of allergy or acne based thing.  He also said, thankfully, taht it was nothing to worry about if all the spots did was arrive and then leave - I should only worry if they appeared to be bothering her of if they hung around at all.  She does get that black stuff under the chin, but only to monor extent, so its probably linked.
I guess I'm happy as long as the vet is and Silvie is!  Poor Silvie...

It's feline acne, looks like they have flea dirt on their chin but it is in fact just feline acne, usuallly clears up on it's own, I have had a couple come in with it.

And change from plastic dishes cos that helps, or even cures

Yep - thanks Lesley for explaining, I should have been clearer.  Feline Acne it is - I read another post in here somewhere a couple of months ago all about it.
In Silvie's case it is very minor, just a wee bit every now and then and comes and goes very quickly on its own without the need to bathe.  I think my efforts at bathing her might distress her far more than the acne does, as it doesn't seem to bother her at all!  :sneaky:
