Title: Should i get my Leo vac for felv this year.. As he was abit poorly last year?
Post by: Canterbury_cats (Sharon) on December 05, 2008, 15:45:22 PM
Following on from Marks post. Both my two will be due vac in Dec (bad timing) i have never done FELV for Bella as she isnt a cat to pick fights. But Leo has always been vac for FELV he is now 13 yrs old.. Last year he was really poorly and off colour for several days. I do live rural and do have several other cats round this way all of which are vac.. They are all owned family member cats. However due to our location we do get the odd dumped cat but not so in the last few years. Leo does get abit bossy and he does tend to stick up for himself. and can i imagine see of the odd intruder. But he hasnt has any bites etc for a few years.

So shall i vac him again for FELV this year...? Last year when he was poorly i thought i wouldnt but i am not 100 not sure..Of course it would be a titch cheaper but it isnt the issue.. The vets i use which is not the one Mark uses charges around 40 quid for felv, etc, etc and a bit cheaper for the basic stuff..

Thoughts pls

I'm sure I read somewhere they built up immunity to FeLV anyway after a few years?  If he had a bad reaction to it last year I'd be very tempted to just have the flu & enteritis and rely on the built up immunity/lack of fighting.

oscar doesn't have any vaccs - he gets really ill - its on the vets advice, she says we should do enteritis every three years

Personally I wouldnt Sharon, especially as he was poorly with it before.

My vets will not vacinate a cat of 13 with it cos tthey should have immunity...well they would if the owner insisted.

In view of him being ill I definately would not do it.

Its not as though he gets really ill. Just quiet and off colour.. But he is a very healthy puss cat for his age... But i think i will forgo the FELV as he must have some kind of immunity after 12 yrs of the stuff. Thanks all
