Title: Smartie ''s nail has gone into his pad - cannot get it out !
Post by: bunglycat on November 25, 2008, 15:23:23 PM
Just been having a cuddle with Smartie and on stroking his paws , realised a nail wasn''t feeling right.
Had a look and at its gone into his pad .
I have gently tried to get it out ,but it seems to be in a way - i did think of trying to cut it and see if it came out then- but dare not - holding a wriggly cat and trying to cut his claw ( which i have never done before either , always let the vet do them )i don''t think i could in case - it still doesn''t come out his pad  or i make it bleed.
Looks like a vet trip again tonight.

This is one of those times that you need to know what you're doing or you could make matters worse.  Poor Smartie, that must be hurting him.  Our vet nurse would sort that out for us free of charge, so I hope yours is the same.

Hope so , though i doubt it.
Seem to have a run of going to the vets nearly every week earlier on in the year with one or the other of them.
Hope its not starting agin !! Had Sophie there last week with diahrea (spelling) , that was £30 , luckily she seems ok now , but could be age related ,so will have to wait and see.
Smartie unfortunately is the worst in the car too , gets stressed and howls from the min ute you put him in the basket, all the 12 miles to the vet and all the way home again !!
Thats why i looked at myself first , but can''t bring myself to have a go , so off to the vets before 6pm.

Poor Smartie and poor you too   I think you're wise though.

We are spoilt as we live literally round the corner from our vet - and still Blip yowls all the way there.  So I empathise.

I'm sure it will be a piece of cake for the vet (nurse?), but let us know all the same...

Smartie is fine thanks .
Went to the vet -he howled all the way there, all down the street from where i parked and right until i was inside the vets !
Anyway, he cut his front claws and it came out his pad easily - apparently he has an ingrowing nail and i noticed it pretty quickly .
He said he had one in this morning and the nail had gone into the pad and out the other side -in a mess , so they can''t have noticed that for ages  :'(.- poor cat.
Anyway, to check them every 3-4 months now and take him to get them clipped again.
He only needed his front ones cutting and only charged £4.70  ;D

Glad to hear it, this happened with one of my bridge babes, fortunatley my neighbour is a nurse, so pulled them out for me (she had 2 before I noticed it) - now I Check all claws weekly, and clipping is one of the first things done to fosters. I would recommend checking them more often than 3-4 months though, I would do monthly at the very minimum, and you can clip them yourself.

I had almost a similar problem with Tommy (RIP hun) earlier this year. When they get older and less active I think their claws need looking at a little more frequently. It's very easy to miss until it starts causing a problem. Glad he's OK and glad your purse didn't suffer too much  ;)

Thanks - i am a bit wary of doing it myself - he wriggled a fair bit at the vets with me holding him , and he is one of the easiest and best to do anything with - none of mine are keen on having their paws touched and i checked them all when i got back -FiFi is a little b---- to do anything with and she yowled, swore and tried to bite and scratch me -and i was only looking at them to see they were ok !!!
I don''t think i could do it on my own - it really need one to hold and one to cut and i don;;t know anyone to help.

Maybe worth having a look at them all .
He told me when they get older they don''t use the scratching posts so much - i had Sophies done last week too. (she is 14 1/2)Smartie is 11 1/2.
Winston goes out a fair bit and his and FiFi s are ok , Bungly might need hers doing soon though !
Its trying to find them,  in amongst all the fur !
