Tiggy (18 3.4 hyperthyroid and CRF) has been off colour over the weekend, she was still drinking and eating a little bit if I hand fed it to her but she wasn't her normal self. Took her to the vets this morning and he gave her the corticosteroid injection early, got home and was just about to leave for work when I heard her being sick. Rushed into the bedroom to find her vomiting uo a really thick mucus with blood in, she was really distressed and the mucus was hanging down almost to the floor.
I rushed her back to the vets and saw a different one who has given her an antibiotic injection and some tagamet syrup to give her. I have to take her back in tomorrow morning. I'm so worried about her and am terrified that I'm losing my little girl :'(

Did the second vet give you any idea why the blood in the vomit? How is she doing at the moment?
After Tiggy had vomited the mucus she sat there with her tongue half stuck out with blood all round her mouth. When I saw the second vet I said about the possibility that she may have cut her tongue or something, she double checked there were no injuries to her mouth or tongue so it definitely came from inside her. When I saw the first vet I asked him to give her this mornings tablets as she normally takes them in treats but I knew she wouldn't want to eat. I'm hoping the combination of a completely empty (and sensitive) tummy and the tablets was what caused the vomiting but the fact there was blood in it is what's worrying me the most.
She has been sleeping since we got back and is very quiet, her breathing is normal as was her heartrate and temperature when we saw the first vet.

Helen, I wonder if it could have been the vet, giving her the tablets that way, rather than her just eating them as treats, just grazed the back of her throat a bit and caused a bit of bleeding - just a thought. It may not have been something that the second vet could see right at the back or even a little way down the throat.

Did the vet give you any idea why she might be bleeding internally? (if it is not the tablets against the throat or on an empty stomach)

I don't think it could have been the tablets scratching her throat, he just dropped them on to the back of the tongue and she swallowed them straight away with no struggle.The second vet didn't really put forward any reasons as to the blood, she just said to bring her back tomorrow morning and if she's no better she'll have to stay in the hospital on IV fluids :'(
I woke her up a few minutes ago and she was still doing the lip licking thing, gonna try and leave her alone for a bit to rest. She's in her tent and I've set up camp next to her with my snuggly fleece.

I think they must be working... She's had a little drink of water and has, unprompted, eaten a few mouthfulls of chicken breast. I think the steroids are kicking in now so hope to see more improvement by tomorrow.
I was so worried earlier, I really thought she was dying when I saw her vomiting like that. It wasn't like 'normal' sickness, she was foaming at the mouth, the mucus had blood in and was really stringy and she was trying to wipe at her mouth with her little paw, this all happened under the bed - I didn't want to drag her out mid wretch, I just felt so helpless. I know that she has reached a good age but that doesn't make the thought or reality of losing her any easier :scared:

Tiggy has now eaten a 1/3 of a can of A/D, had another drink and was caught washing her face ;D She'd like to thank everyone for all the head/nose kisses, snuggles and cuddles, believe me she has had every one of them!

I've no idea, the only thing I can think of is that it was the tablets being taken on a completely empty stomach added to the fact that she was poorly in the first place hence the first vet visit. Will be keeping a very close eye on her but I think the steroids have helped her turn the corner, she is much brighter now so I'm much happier too ;D

She seems completely recovered, she has eaten some more and is purring like a steam train. Have another vets appointment at 10am for her to be checked over, it's with a different vet again as it's at the Hospital rather than our normal branch. I'm going to ask whether the tablets on a completely empty stomach could have caused the bleeding as I don't think I mentioned that to the second vet I was in such a panic.

Hmmn, well saw the third vet... I asked about tablets on an empty stomach being the cause but she completely ruled that one out. She had read Tiggy's notes and asked me about the steroids, I explained that she started on them when she had a severe episode of diaorrhea which was cured with the use of the steroids. When the first lot of steroids wore off there was no diaorrhea but she was generally depressed with lack of appetite and nausea so the steroids have been continued as they generally make her feel good, there have been no further incidents of diaorrea or vomiting blood except for this one frighteneing episode yesterday.
She then proceeded to tell me that Tiggy probably had some sort of bowel disease, I said that since that episode of diaorrhea over a year ago she has never even had a slighty soft poo but she still said that inflammation of the bowel was what was wrong with her. The explanation she offered for the blood was that she was so inflamed the action of vomiting caused the bleeding. She has given her another antibiotic injection and some antibiotic tablets for the next four days.
She was really nice and seemed very knowledgable but if this has been a problem all along why hasn't Tiggy's regular vet mentioned it even once. She goes to the vet at least once every four weeks and it has never been put forward as something to consider. I am just grateful that Tiggy seems completely recovered and is back to her old self.

That sounds a bit confusing. At least you can ask your regular vet about the bowel thing next time you go but it's odd he hasn't mentioned it before if it's an issue. Difficult when you have 2 different vets telling you different things.

I suppose medicine is a matter of opinion as well as evidence (a consultant I saw last year referred me to a specific radiographer because 'she gives an excellent opinion'). Worth discussing this new opinion with Tiggy's regular vet, as Susanne suggests.

The treatment would be the same ie continue with steroids if she is right so nothing will really change, I'm just a bit perplexed why nothing has been said before. My regular vet is very open and discusses things at length with me so I know he would have said something. He gives her a full examination every time we go in so I'm fairly sure it's not something he could have missed. He is very experienced (20 years plus) and a partner in the practise, the vet we saw today was not as experienced, 5 years since graduation (they have a website listing each vets specialist subjects and qualifications!) but did seem very knowledgable and very nice too. Will definitely discuss it next time I see him.
One thing I was astounded by was that out of 3 appointments I've had in the last 24 hours they only charged me for the first one! I had to pay for the meds given today, it was so cheap I said to the receptionist that I still had to pay for the second appt yesterday bust she said there was no charge for both the 2nd and 3rd appointments!
Cuddle has just been administered, she's gone back to sleep in her tent. She looks a bit nervous in there though, the last two days she has been plucked out and bundled into the carrier whilst sleeping in there so she is sleeping with one eye open at the moment!

Almost but not quiite, it was actually 03:05 am this morning. Then we had a lovely 'I need to press my head against yours' session at about 05:00! You won't hear me moaning about it anymore though, I'm just so glad my baby is OK :Luv:

That looks like one smart tent Tiggy has! And quite right too, she's a beautiful ginger gal! My Max loves his battered old tent (but for hiding when he's stressed,not for sleeping). Where can you get a decent kitty tent like that these days?
Hope Tiggy's doing just fine again now and that you can relax a wee bit Helen. Know just how hard that is. xxx
