Title: Sylvester at the vets this Wedesday - back from the vets
Post by: MrsR on November 23, 2008, 18:06:44 PM
Well Sylvester has an appt with the vets at 6pm this coming Wednesday, I am worried as he has lost a lot of weight in the last month, he is happy in himself and eating and drinking normally but trying not to think the worst (the C word) as his weight loss has been rapid.   Hoping its his thyroid and at least that can be controlled with tablets.

Hubby is comeing home early from work tomorrow to come with me - don't think I could cope alone just incase.    Hoping tomorrow they will do bloods but then its days of worry for the results.     Oh I am so worried, I look at him and just want to cry.

Think its human nature to expect the worst and really hope that its something easily sorted; however even if it is cancer its not the end of the world our Buster died aged 22 with cancer in May and I can truthfully say he enjoyed life to the end and had a really peaceful journey to the bridge as did Barney who died with cancer aged just 5years .
Never be afraid of gaining knowledge even if its not what you want to hear, forewarned is forarmed.
Sending you  because I think you need it.

Well he had full bloods done and the vets have just phoned and all bloods are totally normal showing a healthy cat   He has lost 1.5 kilos in weight and everything felt fine to the vets show they said bring him back in in 2 weeks time to see what his weight has done and they will take it from there.

I am relieved as the were thinking kidney failure due to his recurrent cystitis but nothing came up on the blood tests but I am obviously still sick with worry as he looks so thin.   All I have done all evening is cry!!

What else could it be ?

What wouldn't show on a full set of blood tests ?

Glad the bloods are ok, I presume they've checked thyroid they usually do with full bloods?

I am presuming they do I asked about hyperthyroidism and the vet said the behaviour usually becomes aggressive which Vesti has become less aggressive!

I asked hubby as he spoke to the vet when they called as I couldn't face it with tears constantly streaming down my face tonight and he said they said they included thyroid in the list of tests they siad they checked for.

I would ask for a copy of the blood test results...if they argue, you paid for them so you are entitled to a copy.

Have to say my vet was very worried about Franta not eating and any weight loss, dont think she would have stopped looking for problem if he had lost that must weight, let alone say just bring him back in two weeeks!

Is he eating normally?

I think that maybe you may need a second opinion here

He is eating fine, drinking fine, not dehydrated, temp was normal, behaviour generally normal apart form being a little more sucking towards me, coat is fine, teeth and gums were fine.

Now this is just a thought and maybe a stupid one and I dont know if he is your only cat or whether such a great loss of weight could be caused for this reason.

I know you are expecting and just wonder if he knows this and is very very stressed out, I have read that cats can tell sometimes, and if you have also been stressed, this may have passsed to him. But I dont know if stress can have such a quick and violent reaction, so am just sorta chucking it in the melting pot.

The little more sucking towards you could be an indicator maybe?

I have thought about that and its not a silly idea at all.     I have 7 cats in total but no fighting etc has been occuring, if anything Sylvester has been a lot more chilled and tolerant of the other cats which he usually isn't - he has always tended to bully Bunty and thats calmed down a lot.

Interesting that he has lost so much weight but yet no reason for it.

Vesti seems to have put on a little weight and he is back to bullying our other cats a little and thats typical Vesti so hopefully when he is at the vets this coming Friday for a weigh in he would have put weight on, if not its x-rays I think.

Vesti is back from the vets and thankfully has put on weight  :) thorough exam again and vet went through all the blood results and they are happy nothing is wrong with him, we talked about my pregnancy possibley affecting him and that fact that recently the local bully cat  has come in through our cat flap, with the fact that Vesti is a nervous cat and having recurrent cystitis doubley confirms his nerves that it may be due to a combination of his nerves, my pregnancy, bully cat and recently fireworks night.    The vest said they were not worried and there is no reason they can see for mor einvestigative and invasive rtests as he has put on a nice amount of weight since last seeing him.   We talked in depth about things that wouldn't show up on bloods mainly specific cancers and they put my mind at rest about possibel small signs of this that Vesti is not showing at all.   All his internal organs felt normal to the vet through his body, etc and I am a lot more calmer now with know what Vesti is like anyway.   I am just thankful nothing has shown up and my big boy or not so big boy at the moment isn't suffering in anyway internally  :Luv:
