Title: Muscle Tremors
Post by: emma_vn on November 08, 2008, 16:25:31 PM
Any cat owners here ever had any experience of cats having muscle tremors?

Finn is having them on a daily basis, with increasing frequency. It is always when he is awake and seems to affect his entire body with various severities. Sometimes it's just his ears that are twitchy, other times (like as I type now) he will sit with his entire head & body trembling.

It is not cold, and it's not a full seizure, as he retains full conciousness and awareness throughout. Sometimes he squints his eyes and sometimes is very reactive to noise & touch, which he has not been before. He sometimes resents being picked up, other times not.

This has been progressing for the past couple of months now. Biochemistry bloods normal, nothing on xrays, and we are waiting on results of a toxoplasma blood test. He is 9 years old. Vets are considering the possibility of forebrain disease or even a brain tumour affecting the nerves to his muscles.

The only time I have seen something but much more minor was after Franta had an accident and fell into some dirty water a couple of weeks ago.

It just affected his head when you touched one point behind one ear and it would shake and lean downwards.

It went over the next couple of days and the vet has looked at the area and thought he had a little lump there but no prob that she could see with his ears.

Byron's body has does funny tremors, about 2 weeks ago she did a few times that week which was a bit alarming at the time but she hasn't done it since.  I have heard someone else say their old cat did this and I took it to be the same but if it had got more frequent or worse I would have taken her to the vet just to check it out.

No experience I'm afraid, just hope it is nothing too serious and you get to the bottom of it

Just a quick update... Finn's results came back negative for Toxoplasma. He is still doing it, but not to a severity we can't handle. Vets don't think its epilepsy, and it's certainly not true epilepsy as that causes seizures at rest and in younger animals most of the time. He could just have brain degeration. At the moment he doesn;t seem to be suffering so I don't think it justifies referral for an MRI yet.
