Title: trapping hints anyone?
Post by: Angiew on October 19, 2008, 02:49:03 AM
I got a call on fri pm from one of the industrial units on the NEC. 4 kittens running around outside among the lorrries.
went over and trapped 2 of them seperately. At 5 the workers went home and mum (that was a suprise) turns up a bit later and I got her and a third kitten together.
Took than all home about 7pm and a further suprise is mum is as affectionate as they come with 3 little spitballs who look about 8 weeks old. Boy did she eat, two plates of food straight down, kittens didn't even get a look in! (followed by two more plates and a bowl of biscuits! and the same 4 plates for breaky!)

Anyway, went back at 9pm spent all fri night there. First thing I had to do was let go a black tom who had got himself caught while I was having my tea.
The last kitten calling every couple of hours and doing a circuit around the container they have obviously been living under but she was not going near the trap - tried tuna, chicken....

left at 7 this morining (yesterday morning now lol) . two hours sleep and back with mum in a carrier to put with the trap and though kitten hoveres a bit more she did not go nearer than about 9 feet.

Gave up a 6pm, came home and slept , have just woken up.

So what to try next? I was going to ask the staff at the unit to put food down for her daily and perhaps try again in a weeks time but seeing the others her glugging at mum , is there anything more to try?

Hi,

You must be shattered!  we usually use mackerel or some smelly fish especially if we have no luck.  Sometimes it can be hard and take a while to get them all.  The last lot I trapped were a group of ferals, I got the mum the first day, then 2 of 3 kittens together soon after but the shyest kitten took over a week to trap but I just persevered and got her in the end.  I wish you luck with this last one off the top of my head can't really think of any other suggestions maybe some other members may have some more ideas.

I know Julie (Pinkbear) swears by sardines in tomato sauce and always carries stocks in her car  :evillaugh:

Well went to bed at 8pm to fall asleep in front of pop idol (who got booted by the way?)
Up at 3 to drink then slept to noon.

Latest plan is that Jill is helping tonight. Going out about 9pm and taking mum and kittens with us in a small pen and a larger pen to try and catch her in (with the help of some strnig if we have any!).
After that it will be getting the workers to feed her during the week and having another go next weekend. They could even try and trap her during the day - we'll see - hopefully tonight will sort it.

Mum cat continues to eat like mad. Alternates between suckling and batting her kittens away, is totally knackered and has quite a large firm tummy so a trip to the vets will see if the next generation is brewing.....

Harvey is currently hiding behind my filing cabinet, having legged it out with mummy so hopefully will be 'got' so he can join in the fun tonight. But hence no photo!

Thats my choice weapon, sometimes plain old dryfood can work

plain old dryfood can work

And nasty old Whiskas dry at that  :evillaugh:

My tiny Willow would be normal weight if I let her eat that c**p  :evillaugh:

Just a little aside.
What's that great toy the kittens are playing with? The furry doiinggy one? Looks great, as do the cats.

Good luck
