Thought it would be interesting to see how my seal colourpoint kittens have changed since 12 weeks of age to now (18 months)

-
They are just gorgeous!! :Luv2:
-
Lovely pics

lovely pics :Luv:
i never realised how much darker their faces get as they get older. that must be quite tricky if you breed to show or something - hard to tell how they'll turn out!!!
but yours are gorgeous either way :Luv:
-
They are pure white at birth.
They start developing their colour pointing at about 6 weeks.
You sort of know what kind of ragdoll they will be then.
-
wow!! well i never. i wonder what makes their colour develop.... although thinking about it dalmations are born spotless arent they?
anyhoops, sorry to go off topic - but i'm fascinated!! ;D
-
Thats ok Hannah. Ask away. :innocent:
-
its something to do with temperature isn't it Philip??
-
I havent heard that its due to temperature.
The kittens colour points are determined by the parents.
If 2 seal colourpoint ragdolls mate then the kittens will be all seal or blue.
If a bi colour ragdoll mates with a seal colourpoint ragdoll, then it gets more complicated.
-
Again this distinctive colouring is due to a mutation of the basic black colour. The Siamese colouring is in fact just a couple of steps removed from albino pigmentation, which would result in a white animal with pink eyes (very rarely seen in cats). The Siamese colouring is also unusual in that it is temperature sensitive, meaning that in a cooler environment the cat will appear darker - this is of course why the "points" (legs, face, ears, tail) are much darker than the rest of the body. A less marked expression of this temperature sensitive pigmentation is seen in the Burmese breed, the most common variety of which is a rich brown with very slightly darker "points" but without the blue eyes seen in the Siamese. The hybrid of Burmese and Siamese, known as a Tonkinese, has intermediate colouring (paler body merging into darker "points" with aquamarine eyes). The Siamese coat pattern is additionally seen in many other breeds, e.g. the Birman, Ragdoll, Snowshoe, and Colourpoint Persians and British Shorthairs.
not my words but gives you and idea of what I meant - am trying to get to grips with the genetic thing can you tell!!

GENETICS:
This is a very interesting subject and one every breeder needs to master to become a good breeder. The Ragdoll cat has one of the most complex set of genetics of all cats as not only are we dealing with the pointed gene but also two different random white spotting genes.
COLOUR: We'll talk about colour first. There are four traditional colours of the Ragdoll, SEAL, BLUE, Choco-late and LILAC. We'll talk about these first.
SEAL is the dominent colour and BLUE is the dilute of seal.
CHOCO-LATE is the dominent colour and LILAC is the dilute of Choco-late.
Seal mated to a seal will produce seal and can also produce blue
Seal mated to a blue will produce seal and blue
Blue mated to blue will produce only blue
Choco-late mated to Choco-late will produce Choco-late and lilac
Choco-late mated to lilac will produce both Choco-late and lilac
Lilac mated to lilac will only produce lilac.
Now to confuse everyone Raggies can carry colours when they come from two coloured parents eg, a seal sire and a blue dam. A seal from this mating will be a seal carrying blue. A blue cannot carry seal. If two seal parents both carry blue then they will produce both seal and blue kittens at a ratio of 75% seal to 25% blue.
Choco-late is a very different story and both parents have to either be Choco-late or come from two carriers of Choco-late to breed Choco-late. Choco-late must be on both sides of the pedigree to breed Choco-late. A lilac cannot produce Choco-late unless mated to a Choco-late and a cat cannot carry lilac as it is a dead clour. They can only carry Choco-late. If both parents have one Choco-late parent then they will be carriers and if you mate two carriers together you can breed all four colours. All kittens from one Choco-late parent and one other coloured parent will all be Choco-late carriers. Only 25% of kittens born from one carrier parent and one other coloured parent will be carriers of Choco-late and you will not know which ones unless they were all test mated back to a Choco-late or lilac.

Philip do you get red point Raggies?? I have a red point Birman and I know the two breeds have many similarities! :Luv2:
-
Yes.
Red point ragdolls exist.
Only recently been recognised by the GCCF.
-
Thanks Philip - I do have a soft spot for Raggies/ Birmans/ Persian etc etc - btu I know that reds are a little less common. I wonder if they are all as Vocal as my little boy?? :evillaugh:

Stunning :Luv:

If your red point birman is as chatty as my ragdolls, then yes i'm sure red points are just the same.
