As some of you might know, we have a houseguest an old stray called jimi who turned up and moved in much to the disgust of the resident spoilt boy freddy, jimi had a vet check, had a dental and had big tumours in his ears that make him virtually deaf, these cannot be operated on they cause him some irritation but he seems to tolerate them pretty well, sometimes he scratches at them too much and they can occasionally bleed, from time to time I use antibiotic drops. Anyway, point of my thread is his pee is the strongest thing I have ever encountered in my life, they have a tray each and from time to time swap about but whereas freddys pee is actually not bad at all, jimis is eye wateringly ammonia strong, he had an accident a few weeks ago, I had a night out, there was a delay in emptying the tray, entirely my fault and he went on the carpet, the towel that i grabbed to mop it up, had to be thrown out it was SO strong. Is this normal?
They are on different foods, jimi is on whiskas supermeat and some dry complete, (because he was a grateful stray, needed building up and would tolerate the supermeat), fred is on posh felix pouches and some dry complete (because he has forgotten being a stray and is now picky), fred drinks a fair bit as well as his two wet meals a day. Jimi drink a lot less but still gets two wet meals a day.
They both pee and poo happily, my only concerns in the utter strength of the pee and it permeates the whole house in a way that freds just doesn't.

I know with my boy, since his diagnosis of early kidney problems, he wee does sometimes smell stronger than before, not sure if its related though.
Has his kidney function been checked?
It may even be down to not drinking enough, I guess in humans your wee is a darker colour etc if you're a bit dehydrated?
Hopefully someone else may have some more useful suggestions :shy:

Hmmmm, no no kidney function tests or anything like that, oh dear, I was hoping that people would just say, yes sometimes cat pee is like that, I grew up with cats and have never smelt anything so strong... my old much missed marley developed bladder stones, so lots of blood in her wee and it was pretty strong but it was strong in terms of cat pee, this smells like pure ammonia.... :scared:
-
Sorry hun, I didn't mean to panic you :shy:
Its just one of the things I thought of as I'm going through it with my little man at the moment.
How much does Jimi drink?
The only reason I thought there were any kidney issues with Max was that he was drinking more, and peeing more too, but being indoors only its very easy for me to keep tabs on this!
I honestly didn't mean to make you worry unduly

Is he neutered? Entire cats can have the most disgusting smelling wee
If he is neutered then I'd try and get a urine sample from him and get your vet to check it along with a blood test just to be on the safe side.

No no, you are okay, I think I sort of had a feeling this may mean a vet trip, it's just that he seems fine in himself. I meant to say that I initially thought it was maybe old trays, when he moved in a dug out an old tray that marley had used briefly before she died and I had put in a cupboard so I thought oh it's probably a rotted tray so I bought two brand new ones and they are just as bad... I have a pretty sensitive nose and for the last couple pof months I can smell cat pee EVERYWHERE. I might try changing his food, in case it's linked to the whiskas supermeat (which has to be the most disgusting chemically smelling food in the world) and seeing if that helps, otherwise vet it will be.
Jimi doesn't drink much at all, I see him at the water bowls rarely unlike fred who will drink a fair bit especially in warm weather.

No, he's been snipped, they both have, fred is young and jimi is ancient... I suppose I just hoped it might be an age thing... you know maybe it is a food thing... that stuff does stink... or I am clutching at straws!!
Honestly it doesn't even smell of cat pee, I mean no-one likes the smell but at least it's dinstinctive, I can always track down an accident but this smells like it is burning your head on the inside when you scoop the tray!!

No, I don't think its the food, my lot were only fed raw up till a few months ago, when I started to introduce some commercial food too (Whiskas supermeat), and I havent noticed any change in the smell of the wee - now the poo....! thats a different matter all together LOL!
Anyway, if it smells that strong, it sounds like it could be a urine infection, or as others have mentioned, CRF can cause the wee to smell stronger, although with my Jasper who has CRF, his urine is very dilute and hardly smells at all, but his CRF is quite advanced.
